Edgerunners
I just finsihed watching the anime and can’t seem to move on from it. It’s just so good, the story, the writing, the music it’s all amazing. Any anime similar?

I honestly think Samurai Champloo deserves to be talked about way more when people discuss anime classics.
On the surface, it's a story about three people traveling through Edo-period Japan, but the way it mixes samurai action with hip-hop, comedy, drama, and emotional moments is something I still haven't seen many anime do as well.
The soundtrack alone gives the entire show its own identity. The fights feel stylish without being overdone, and Mugen and Jin have such different personalities and fighting styles that their dynamic never gets boring. Fuu also keeps the group from feeling like just another typical duo of rival characters.
What I love most is that Samurai Champloo doesn't feel like it's desperately trying to be "deep" or "cool." It just has its own style and commits to it completely.
Even after all these years, the animation, music, atmosphere, and characters still hold up incredibly well.
If you've never watched it, don't let the fact that it's an older anime stop you. Samurai Champloo is one of those shows that still feels unique today.

Certain movies to me have this big Anime feel to them.
The Professional, Kill Bill, and Lucky Number Slevin.
Especially when they do action scenes in a flash back. Hard to describe.
It's a mix between Comic Book / Anime vibes.
I am wondering if anyone knows any anime series especially like the Movie Lucky Number Slevin.
Anything less than 40 hours total watch time is preferable. Nothing like Endless anime like bleach or DBZ please.

I'm looking for stories that treat people with complete emotional sincerity. I want characters who feel like real human beings rather than jokes.
It's also important to me that they are psychologically believable characters. People should behave consistently with who they are, even when they make mistakes. I really like when it feels like the world keeps going even when your not watching (FMAB and Haibane do a good job at this). I also really value when emotion is treated with respect no matter how ugly it gets. when a show treats the characters with dignity and doesn't make light of or gloss over real things they might be feeling even if for most people it's uncomfortable to watch and they might not like it.
Another thing that's important is very strong internal consistency and no obvious plot armor. I care much more about a story keeping its own promises than whether the ending is happy or sad. I'm completely fine with supernatural elements or unusual mechanics as long as they are established early and followed consistently.
I also really like natural relationships. Clannad spoilers ahead For example some of my favorite parts in Clannad is when Tomoya and Nagisa are in bed talking to each other late at night or when Tomoya asks Nagisas dad if he can marry her. That plus really any of the relationships in Haibane renmei feel extremely natural with no obvious author pressure.
I'm totally ok if there is little plot but plot is also good as well. I'm totally ok if nothing happens for long stretches or is considered super slow. I really like when scenes are allowed to breathe and it trusts the audience to not get bored. FMAB is probably around the upper limit to how much action I typically like but if everything else fits really well I'll give it a shot even if it goes past it a little. Also open to old anime
my top favorite of all time are these:
Haibane Renmei (my gold standard)
Clannad and Clannad: After Story (Also tied for first)
Monster
Maquia
Plastic Memories
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
A Silent Voice (despite a few moments that may have looked like plot armor)
86 (same thing, but season two had a lot of plot armor)
Frieren
my anime hall of shame is pretty small, just kaguya sama and nichijou and the devil is a part timer. not really looking for forced comedy.
yeah but most of all I'm looking for an anime that will open a new perspective or that you genuinely feel like may have changed your life or worldview. like I said I don't mind if it's slow or has no plot or is depressing.
Here's all the anime I've seen so you don't recommend the same few things:
Children who chase lost voices
From up on Poppy hill
Clannad
Angel beats
Your Name
Your lie in April
5 centimeters per second
Ano Hana: The Flower We Saw That Day
Plastic Memories
Girl Und Panzer
Violet evergarden
Grave of the fireflies
A Silent Voice
Steins;Gate
Hotarubi No Mori E
I want to eat your pancreas
Weathering with you
Kanon
Air
Nagi-Asu: A Lull in the Sea
I am sakamoto
The devil is a part timer
Spirited Away
Orange
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0
White Album 2
Garden of words
Usagi drop
Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms
Charlotte
Suzume
Erased
Death note
FMA brotherhood
Monster
Frieren
Terror in Resonance
Kikis delivery service
Puella magi madoka magica
86
Neon Genesis Evengalion
Haibane renmei
Planetarian
Serial experiments lain
*last minor footnote, please don't recommend anything with lots of gore or fan service if you can help it. I really get turned off when a characters dignity is stripped by fan service to keep people watching. It ruins the fragile trust you build with the author which makes it hard to learn from. If you read this far thanks

I stopped watching anime as I disliked the amount of female fanservice in them that constantly reminded me that I wasn’t attracted to women and was different that guys that watch it and how I am “supposed” to be.
That being said I am interested in sports genres that have cute athletic guys and shojo cutesy stuff with the doilies and tea parties. My sort of guy is the athletic type with some abs but has a pretty chill personality. I have also watched some fantasy magical girl stuff like sailor moon and like that too.

I do think the manga for tokyo ghouls superior so do know that, also the animes garbadge. Im also not really looking for manga reccomendations. Also no one better say, "find one yourself, look through things to see if it sounds intresting, enjoy the journey and dont get spooned what to watch" if your not giveing reccomendations then just dont comment, ive gotten too many of these before. Ive been an anime fan for 2 years now
Im not intrested in or dont like:
Death note (poor character writeing and development compared to others ive seen, still entergaining to some but i personally got bored, i also disliked light as a character as i felt he was an egotistic and pridefull jerk, i see him as pure evil as he doesnt change that much and died pathetically, especially in the manga)
Cyberpunk (just didn't like the overall vibe and was too sexual at times with jokes and all that wich kinda ruined the vibe for me)
Chainsaw man (disliked how the mnaga ended, i read all the way through and the ending is trash)
Aot (ik people will hate me for this but it just didnt get me hooked in the first 2 episodes and wasn't that intresting too me, and I already know alot of the major twists from what ive heard on the sereis, ill admit its good in terms of writeing but isn't for me)
Kaguya sama (doesnt seem intresting to me)
Jjk (the character wroteing is kinda mid and focuses heavily on fights, wasn't as good as people say, i personally got bored)
Mha (doesnt fit the vibe of what I usually watch and wasn't that entertaining)
Naruto i disliked Naruto himself as I was watching since he was annoying)
Ive watched:
Call of the night
Akame ga kill
Demon slayer (what got me into anime)
And a few others that I cant name off the top of my head (ive seen more but cant remember them all)

I’ve tried Neon Genesis Evangelion, Code geass, Robotech, and classic Gundam, but their older visual styles don’t appeal to me. I also found Code Geass to lack strategic, science-backed finesse in its tactical execution (too much plot armor/melodrama). Ideally, I’m looking for a series with entertaining, well-thought-out mecha combat, realistic or hard sci-fi tactical elements, and high production value both visually and musically. Any suggestions?"

r/AnimeReccomendations • u/Plastic_Effort_9403 • 13h ago
stuff like the spiral in "uzumaki"
the floating heads from "junji ito maniac" episode 3 hanging balloon
and vivy's fluorite eyes song (it's not so much ABOUT the apocalypse but i did enjoy all the action and wheatley (Matsumoto) was my favorite character
another one is parasyte the maxim but that show isn't so much an apocalypse but something from outer space is taking over and destroying humanity from the inside out

I’ve watched most of the big mainstream anime and I’m looking for something that flew under my radar.
I want a genuinely good story, memorable characters, and preferably something that keeps getting better as it goes. Any genre is welcome.
What’s one anime you’d recommend that you rarely see people talk about?
