A gorgeous piece I commissioned by the talented @gros-chat-fait! Their Kofi is here. I cannot thank them enough for helping to bring my vision to life.

References the painting Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan by Ilya Repin, shown in the second slide. The Berensons are the most tragic family ever written, and I thought this classic painting mirrored some the horror they go through.

Discussion How did Scholastic create the ebook files?

I read the fantastic 30th anniversary article recently posted (thanks again u/BabagaBeets 😊👍).

Reading it, I came across the tidbit that Scholastic had apparently lost the original 90s manuscripts/files and had to retype (or at least OCR) the original books. I trust the author and it sound plausible, but can anyone else confirm this?

If so, makes me appreciate how relatively easy it is to copy books. Look up Reboot Rewind on YouTube and you'll see the difficulty of digitizing another under-appreciated 90s classic.

ANIMORPHS: The Greatest Achievement in Juvenile Fiction Turns Thirty

Really enjoyed this deep dive on one of the greatest YA series of all time! https://compostedbooksreview.substack.com/p/animorphs-the-greatest-achievement

This gives an amazing in-depth overview of what K.A. Applegate whas going for. (Warning: it includes spoilers for the finale/final book.) I read dozens of these books growing up and sometimes wondered how well they held up - very well. This is definitely making me want to introduce my future kids to this series.

Intro:

In 1996, I was in the first grade. I remember very little about that year; we were in a new town, very briefly, before leaving Texas for a while, and if I had any friends at that school I’ve long forgotten them. One thing I do recall is the Scholastic Book Fair. Like many kids of my generation, my eyes were immediately drawn to a strange book cover: a boy’s face transforming into a lizard, superimposed over a blue sky. The book was Animorphs 1: The Invasion by K.A. Applegate.1 We bought it, and my dad read it to me as a bedtime story. I was captivated. I had to know what would happen next, so I learned how to read. I spent my allowance on as many Animorphs books as I could and got the rest from the library.
Of course, I grew up and moved on to other things. Put childish things behind me, as they say. But recently, I revisited the series. I have my own kid now, and what better time to return to childish things?
If you read online commentary of Animorphs, one idea that comes up repeatedly is that “it’s not really for kids.” Readers point to the mature themes, the ways Applegate approaches the horrors of war, and claim that it’s really a book for adults, disguised as a kids story. This isn’t exactly true; the Animorphs books are, undoubtedly, for kids. They’re fun adventures, silly at times and serious at others. They’re also surprisingly deep and honest, with a real understanding of war and violence. Applegate tells a grounded and truthful war story, in a way that’s accessible for kids. It is, I believe, one of the greatest achievements in Juvenile Fiction.

Could the Animorphs keep items inside their tight morphing clothes?

I just read The Warning where they morph to fly and ride an airplane, and Jake has his swatting experience. At the next airport, Rachel goes to Western Union and picks up money to buy some cheap shoes. That got me thinking, could they keep paper money between their bike shorts/leotards and their skin, and have cash on them when they morph back to human? They never do it in the series as far as I can remember, I'm just wondering about the logistics from what we know about morphing.

Discussion Starting an Animorphs themed ttrpg: Looking for players and GM!

Hi, since several people showed interest in the previous post I decided to actually go through with it and start a campaign.

We play as characters having to fight the Yeerk invasion while having morphing powers, like in the books, but with original characters

The system is a slightly modified version of the Kids at war system. It's not too rules-heavy, and I think it can be learned rather easily.

As for the schedule, I was thinking weekly on Saturdays at 2 PM EDT, although it might get slightly tweaked later.

To talk we'll use a Discord server I'll create, since that's the simplest solution

IMPORTANTLY, I'm looking for someone who'd like to be the GM, since personally I'm not very good at it. If you think you want to be the GM, let me know!

Anyway, if you want to be a player, comment or DM me. I'll send the link to the Discord server to the players in DMs.

Edit: if for some reason DMs don't work just comment on the post that you want to play, so I know you're interested

P.s. the Kids at War adaptation for Kids on Bikes was created by u/JMRoaming, and he gave me permission to use it

What kind of hell-world produces an animal an animal like this?

Post image

Seriously, I would hate to meet whatever predators created the evolutionary pressure that would result in an herbivore as smart as a human that can run like a horse, speak without making sound, eat without lowering its head, and has 360-degree binocular vision, apposable thumbs, and a freaking wakizashi attached to its tail.

What the hell were they running from?

Who gets hurt the most?

I read the books when I was a kid, but never finished the series.

I’m making my way through it all now, I’m on The Illusion right now.

It seems to me Marco is always the one getting hurt the most in battle. Is that the case or am I imagining it?
