Hey everyone! I am doing a research project for my International Business class and I am required to reach out to 20 people who are living outside of the United States. I have a couple short questions to ask and it would mean a lot to me if I received some answers from people outside of the United States!

It has happened when I visited eastern europe some times ago and i had a day when suddenly I felt sick. My problems were headache and sore throat and by night i became very tired and feverish I did not feel anything serious but anyway i decided to change my plans and stay in a hotel

What is hard for a person in such a situation is that you don't understand what to do since you are in an unknown country . The question is that whether to go to pharmacy ,find a local doctor or rest and see how you feel tomorrow

So I have this friend from an Eastern European country, everything was normal I thought she was really nice UNTIL I heard her talking on the phone to her mother. She was so rude insulting her mom and screaming like crazy, not once but it was always like that. I was shocked, I asked her if she had a good relationship with her mother and she said yes, that her mother just worries and calls her too much and she doesn’t like that. I asked another friend about it and he said it’s pretty normal in their ***culture*** 🙃 is that true? I’ve never seen something like that before and I know each person is different, but the “culture” part was what left me confused. Thank you in advance.

Like what the hell? Why don't asking us, Eastern Europeans about USSR or other communist countries? And what even worse is that they support dumbass dicktatorships like Iran, North Korea, Russia, China. Why don't they all just move to Russia they like so much, and us, Ukrainians, evacuate to normal democratic countries like Belgium and USA where those parasites live. There would be no war after this. Even in my dumb country you can attend protests and not be beaten, while in "free from US empirealism" Iran you can not. And in the same time they support LGBTQ+. DO THEY FUCKING UNDERSTAND WHICH COUNTRIES ARE THE MOST DANGEROUS FOR LGBTQ+ PEOPLE??? CAN THEY FUCKING READ?? Please make me feel better. I have a theory that this feeling towards meat is due to upbringing in a lower‑middle‑class family in a country in Eastern Europe, especially a post‑Soviet country. Because I can’t name a single person in my circle who likes medium‑rare meat. Is this a purely Eastern European thing? Or is it just family‑related personal preferences? Because of the family income?

From the age of six, my parents drilled this into me: "You have to study hard, get into a good university, and find a good job. Otherwise, you'll spend your whole life sweeping streets or cleaning toilets." I studied diligently throughout my childhood; instead of playing with other kids, I was studying math for the university entrance exams—all to secure a good job in the future.

And now, I’m just waiting for Russia to kill me. Or I could go to another country and sweep streets there. How can you even explain to a child in today's Ukraine that they need to study, when the Russians are going to kill everyone anyway?

I'm getting more and more interested in French bonds, especially the 10-year OATs. People who inherited properties for free on account of their grand parents being communist party members now look over people who didn’t and laughingly explain how the property market is fair. Because what their granddad got for 2 cents now cost a quarter million.

The government itself is torn between looking to copy what Russia does, or what the West does but nobody actually comes up with something original.
In all, trying to impose western culture on an uneducated masses wondering why doesn’t it work. It’s like installing Lamborghini parts on a Lada and wonder why it doesn’t start.

Lucia here from EUobserver, and as a Slovak, this one caught my attention personally.

We’ve just published an opinion that makes a pretty bold argument: despite all the problems we talk about in Central and Eastern Europe, this may actually be one of the best periods our region has ever experienced.

CEE countries are closer to Western Europe than ever in terms of income and quality of life. Estonia and Lithuania are now ranking among some of the most attractive countries to live in, and countries across the region have seen huge improvements since joining the EU.

But there’s a catch.

That rapid convergence may be coming to an end. Ageing populations, emigration, weaker universities, low R&D and investment could mean that some countries never fully catch up with Western Europe.

Being from the region myself, I’m really curious how people here feel about this.

Do you think life in Central/Eastern Europe is better than we sometimes give it credit for? And are we still catching up with the West — or has that process started to stall?

I know that Eastern Europe in general doesn't have a great reputation on gay rights because of traditionalism and hostility to anything supposedly associated with the west, a left-wing Eastern European politician who's personally neutral on gay rights said that trying to legalize gay marriage in Eastern Europe is like trying to legalize pork in the Middle East but the amount of homophobia there is just so comically absurd compared to in America. The F-slur or "sodomite" seems to be one of the most common insults in Eastern Europe to whoever they hate, doesn't matter if they're actually gay or not. What makes this even absurd is that some young progressive Eastern Europeans who support things like gay marriage or feminism, have called the far-right or traditionalists, the F-slur. Like why? You couldn't have picked a better and more fitting insult? Like why are they so trigger happy about using homophobic slurs like a COD player using the N-word? I'm not super politically correct but come on why use slurs especially when you claim to be progressive? Why do even some of the progressive Eastern European youths still use homophobic slurs?

Though I'm reminded of a skit by a comedian who said that an edgy progressive who says slurs is much better than a polite bigot, and I agree with him.

I have always wondered about the term " slavic" anyway. There is no such thing for germanics or latins. But conveniently for slavs? I also noticed the people who are all about being "slavic" usually try to claim all achievements and the culture of authentic slavic nations as something moskal. And lets be honest muscovys claim of being slavic is questionable at best. Slavs are european. How european can you be if 80% plus of your territory is outside of europe, a signifikant part of your population identifies as asian and you are basically europes eternal enemy?
