I've bought plenty of things that seemed like a good idea at the time and ended up barely using them. But every now and then, you get something that becomes part of your routine so quickly that you wonder how you managed without it.

For me, it would probably be a decent insulated water bottle. It sounds pretty boring, but having cold water with me throughout the day is one of those small things I genuinely appreciate now.

I'm coming to Amsterdam and other cities in the Netherlands this year and I would like to meet someone friendly along the way. I like history, architecture and museum, so if your city can offer something like that, I definitely want to visit!

So far on my list: Amsterdam, Haarlem, Den Haag, Delft, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Efteling, Den Bosch, Maastricht. Should I add something? Or leave out?

This could be one of those now I’ve noticed it I am hyper sensitive thing but I’ve found Dutch people (when in groups) can be insanely loud. It seems to go against a “be normal” mindset or what I would expect.

From groups of middle aged dutch friends on the bus to students at a cafe shrieking in a full terrace, it seems to be a very inconsiderate of those around…but maybe it’s just an example of a more individualistic society?

I’m still trying to gauge the socially acceptable volume here, but based on convos with my Dutch friends annoyed by people talking loudly in their foreign language in public spaces - perhaps there is a different standard for loud Dutch vs loud other languages 😂😂

Perhaps I come from a low public noise culture so don’t want to be a Karen, but at what point is it okay for someone to ask for a group to quieten down?

Only been here a 3 days, but Amsterdam feels weirdly… functional? Cyclists, cars and pedestrians move like one organism. No honking at all, seemingly no need for waving or flashing lights — yet everyone somehow knows when to move and makes space for each other.

And for a capital city it feels incredibly normal. No giant screens, barely any advertising, nothing particularly flashy. Just clean, calm and relaxed. People are nice, but not overly nice — just genuinely nice, which I really like.

Had basically the same impression sober and under the influence, so at least my sample size is technically two.

Questions for Dutch people:

- Am I seeing reality or am I deep in the Amsterdam dream phase?

- Is casually asking someone “how are you?” normal here, or does that feel weird/too personal?

- What am I completely failing to notice as a short-term visitor?

Another thing that I noticed is the lack of phone use when casually sitting in a cafe, coffee shop, restaurants etc, and people are actually talking or enjoying the silence and views. Is it how people actually are? I really like it and hope it'd be like that everywhere.

I'm going out with this Dutch woman. I don't live in the Netherlands. I am not from the West(EU, US etc). So I don't have much reference for the general Dutch behaviour. And wild coincidence that she's the second Dutch woman I have been with(short stints, both).

Now the main question: she goes into great details and takes things quite literally, even when talking about trivial things. I jokingly called her nerd a few times(me being a monster nerd myself) and she was quite surprised by it. And I thought maybe she has been pretty all her life so people might not have called her nerd/geek. But then I thought about the other Dutch girl and I recalled it was the same. I have ADHD with immense pattern recognition so I am impatient and am really good at seeing where the plot is going. So it's a fun test of my patience :D

Now, is this something that is coming from her culture or I'm reading too much and maybe seeing things from my own cultural/adhd lens.

I am visiting Amsterdam from the US for the time time on Sep 20th for 3 nights. I can't figure out the different districts / areas of the city and where should I find a decent mid-tier hotel for a solo male. I don't want luxury. A small room is fine just neat, clean and functioning.

I am not into museums. Just want to explore the city and take photos. I am a hobbyist photographer and would love to hear if there are photo walks or tours that make me look thru a photographer's eyes and give tips and pointers. Free is great but I can pay obviously for a group (or individual) tour too.

Curious what people found overhyped or just disappointing once they actually used it — banking, delivery, healthcare, internet, anything. Just want the honest take before I get there.

Hello there. My partner (23f) and I (30m) have been together long distance for just about two years now. She's a Dutch citizen, and I am a United States citizen. We have done quite a bit of research on residence permits and the associated requirements, and we are struggling to come up with a plan.

It seems that pursuing a TWV (tewerkstellingsvergunning) is our best option, as suggested by the juridisch loket, but searching for and finding jobs to apply to has been challenging and very uncertain, especially from the United States.

Most people would suggest that she sponsor me, but she is unable to do that. She owns a small business and works part time by which means she is able to support herself, but due to being disabled, she is not able to work full time and meet the income requirements to offer a sponsorship. If I could find a place to work, housing would not be a problem. She has a place to stay that I could join her at.

I am hoping that someone here might have advice on what we can try to do. I don't have a college degree, so I don't believe I fall under the skilled migrant visa. Overall we're feeling a bit hopeless and looking for something. It seems like every option we look into ends up not being viable for us.
