He was admired as a playboy figure in New York during the 80s and 90s. He also used his paper to influence shitty politics that others supported.

Admired is not the right word, I dont think. Maybe it was different outside of the NYC metro area, but here he was known even then as a grifter and a phony.

I live in the midwest and have always saw him as a clown. He's always felt like a big phony to me too. I can't believe so many people can't see right through him.

Unfortunately, he built a reputation that led to his name being synonymous with wealth for a long time.
