If you knew you'd die in your sleep tonight, how would you feel?

u/Upset-Set-8974 4h ago
Heartbroken. I’d never be able to see my daughter grow up 🥺
10
u/MongrelChieftain 2h ago
I wouldn't see my oldest grow up, nor would I get to meet the one on the way. This thread is fucking depressing.

It makes me sad to read this because “relieved” is the first word that came to mind when I clicked on the post and here is your comment front and center. I’m sorry you also feel this way, I hope things get better for you

I am 80 years old and slowly losing my memory and my cognitive abilities.
It would be a relief.→ More replies (12)3

I clicked this thread intending to post my shocking true answer, "relieved", surely the only one in the thread.
Instead I find it's already the top comment.
9
u/BratInPink 2h ago
The saddest thing is OP comments reason. They are 80 and losing cognitive ability and memory. While I think many of the others agreeing aren’t close to that age.
6
u/Low_Chance 2h ago
Yep. I'm nowhere near that, and I still have my health. OP has endured a lot more on that front no question.

u/ProPlayer142 2h ago
I just don't understand why dying is considered an "escape". You won't feel like you've escaped from anything. (Unless you believe in an afterlife that is ...)

Hmm. I have two different experiences about it.
I struggled with suicidal thoughts for many years. (Been free of them for around 5 years now) I was massively depressed. Undiagnosed AuDHD and c-PTSD only worsened it. It’s like the idea of being free of feelings in general. For me it was feelings of shame, not being like everyone else and struggling so much to just do what I perceived as “normal” and expected. What others expected. Not feeling worthy or like I mattered. It tears you down.
Currently, I’m experiencing suicidal apathy. My soul cat passed away a few weeks ago and it’s sent me into a minor depression. I’m not straight up suicidal but like if a car came at me I might not move out of the way. Or go to the hospital if I get a stroke or something. (Don’t have to worry about me as I am aware and been through worse so strangely lucky to be able to navigate this time in a healthy way regardless of my feelings.) it’s not shame this time, it’s just straight up emotional pain. And it would be nice for that to stop, it’s quite unbearable.
Hope that illuminated the subject a little for you.

Can I ask what worked for you ultimately? I have the same diagnoses and currently in hospital under section and cycling through medications specifically for suicidality. I have tried many drugs and they've not worked so interested to know what did help you? Before losing your cat. Which I lost my dog last week, he should have been 15 and didn't quite make it. Had him from 7 weeks as a puppy and I am genuinely devastated

Edit: I did not ignore grief it will be in dm. But I’m so sorry for you loss. ❤️🩹❤️🩹❤️🩹

The older I get my love affair with this life and this world is more and more in the rear view. I see it as a blessing that I'm not as attached to all of this as I used to be
21
u/nationwideonyours 4h ago
I'm with you there. But I don't want to get too detached or the housework will never get done.
18
u/TheSwitchler 4h ago
I mean I still work out and am learning a different language and learning violin. I'm never gonna stop living my life. I just don't feel a strong desire to remain here anymore. Once my end comes I'll be more or less at peace with it

I would simply not go to sleep. Far too much to do. Kids to raise, a man to leave, and a chance to find some piece of happiness before I go.

The fact that so many people are claiming they would be happy about it or relieved means that either the world really is just a terrible place to live in at this point or everyone is super dramatic.

u/CouchPotatoFamine 3h ago
Well they sure as shit aren't hearing "Wonderful World" in their heads each time they see a field of grass.

No debt, no cost of living, no dealing with shitty people whose only goal is to make other people’s lives worse, and I don’t have to do the messy work of actually trying to override my survival instincts. Seems like a no brainer to me. I don’t think people are being dramatic, if you don’t have money and support, your life is terrible and that’s generally accepted. I think the more logical answer is that quite a few people on Reddit haven’t actually experienced real hardship and hearing the experience of others who actually have is probably pretty shocking. Sure some people might be being dramatic but it’s more likely that you can’t comprehend another person actually wanting to die because in your life you can’t fathom the idea.

u/acnhnat 38m ago
and other chronic health issues too. chronic pain is only one of the reasons i feel this way. i'm constantly nauseous and throw up regularly, have allergic reactions to many foods + sunlight + heat + stress + any number of other random things, have multiple food restrictions beyond allergies... like being alive is so fucking exhausting and the support i receive is unfortunately limited. if i could choose to exit this world painlessly, i'm not certain i would pass up the chance. if it was presented as a certainty and i didn't have to choose to hurt my loved ones i would be so fucking relieved.

Mortified as I have small kids. I’d be so sad. I’d call everyone I want to say goodbye to… not many people really… I’d get my final say in. Then I’d get stoned with my spouse and listen to good choons until fade out.
… or I might just stay with my kids whilst they sleep.
I’d be so sad. I’m sad now

u/YogurtclosetCalm4014 4h ago
Terrified at first.
Then I’d call the people I love and stop pretending there’s always more time.

u/MacaroniPoodle 4h ago
If it wasn't for any animals, I wouldn't care, tbh.
But since I have to care for them, I would be panicked trying to find them proper care. And sad because they wouldn't understand what happened to me.

Devastated… I’d stay up as long as possible to kiss and hold my husband and children. Then I’d write them all letters and finally hope for a miracle that I wake up as I fall asleep.

I’d feel really bad for my wife. We are earnestly best friends. She would be losing her most trusted support person and the people around her would not show up for her like I would.
I would spend the rest of my waking hours making sure she knew how much I loved her and helping her determine what next steps she needed to take to be able to figure it out without me.

Actually not bad. I think I’d rather end life early & moderately happy than have to face the greyness and greed we will see over the next 50 years, and end up just yearning to be back in the times we’re in now.

Stressed, Depressed, but an overall calm that it's over. I would feel the sudden need to do so many things, before I closed my eyes. I would call and tell so many people I know that I love them. I'd want to write a will so that all my possessions went to the people who I'd want to have it or would feel honored/loved for having received it. Then try desperately to reach out to some of my favorite authors who have some unreleased books to know the ending, likely to no avail cause why would they given my situation lol.

Peaceful because if I knew I'd make sure that my friends would know so my body doesn't rot away until I'm discovered. My biggest fear since I live alone. and they need to feed my cat.

Sorry I got way too many things to do and see before that happens. But I would probably see a doctor to fix whatever is wrong. Unless its an asteroid or something similar. AT that point I wouldn't go to sleep and i'd party all night.

I’d be glad to know in advance so I could make things easier for my husband and daughter. I’d explain to them what’s up, cry over it with them and then check out a room in a hotel I hate so they have to deal with the aftermath instead of my family.

I’d leave work right now to start spending time with my loved ones before it ends. I’d be sad and terrified, wishing I could do more and have more time to do the things I wanted to do, but I know there’s nothing I’d be able to do but accept it.

It's gonna happen at some point, so this sounds like a painless, peaceful way to make the journey. Just have to make sure my cat's water and food bowls a re full. Might be a while until someone comes to find me.
