Finding work at a Post House?
Hi folks, I've recently found myself having to look for new full time employment, and have been wondering about finding work at an Audio Post House.
I already have experience with technical support in a studio setting (troubleshooting DAWs, consoles & analog gear) as well as some experience with my own work as a freelance sound designer
I know some folks that got full time positions working for audio branding here in NYC, but don't know how one starts to look for this kind of position... do you all have any advice on where / how to look?

Reach out to managing directors at all the audio post houses ideally through a mutual connection, and then be prepared to eat shit for a few years... Ask anyone you know in your network who may have a connection to a post house to talk to a partner there for you and recommend you.

It's kind of funny, because as someone who has now been in audio post for 15+ years and just had my first kid, holy god do I hope they choose a different career path.

the answers saying "nepotism", "through someone", etc, are all correct. its very rare that job listing will go up when there's already a pool of talented people in their "I know a guy" or "she contracted for us last year"
post houses often send people to conferences and stuff so it wouldn't hurt to attend those and talk to a wide net of people to see who is out there

I’m working on starting my own currently so I don’t have to eat shit lol I’m too old for that! I already do jobs parallel to local indie studios and some of their work is kinda shotty at best IMO. Shoot me a dm, maybe we could connect!!

I got my gig at a film restoration place on Craigslist. I had to answer the phone + emails and also do shipping and receiving. But I also got to do a lot of editing and sessions as well.
If you’re in a major market then you can apply for bigger companies directly. But it really does help to know someone. My current gig came from an old high school colleague on Facebook.

I got my first gig in TV post by finding a job listing on Craigslist for someone that needed to know how to mix, re-record VO and could play poker and count cards.
The post didn’t have a typical Craigslist email, it had the personal email from the guy who listed it.
I played cards all through high school, college and a little bit professionally (2years) so I sent in a resume, and did the extra work and tracked down the studio the job poster worked at.
I called the studio and asked for the person who listed the job. The receptionist patched me to him. The first words out of his mouth were, “I have over 400 resumes that got sent to me. You’re the only person who found me and called. Come in tomorrow.”
I went in, my interview consisted of absolutely no sound questions. They just brought me upstairs and started playing poker with me, one of their editors, the owner, and the operator of the company. They kept asking me if they had any tells. What my odds were of winning at each card flip.
After a couple hours they asked if I could start the next day. The World Series of Poker needed a mixer to not only record the VO, Mix, but also make sure their VFX were correct. That was my start.
