Retroachievements

I am wondering why so many people need or use retroachievements on the thor.

Maybe I'm an odd one, but I don’t need my old games to add stuff for me to want to replay them or discover them.

My point is not to be a purist or whatever. I'm curious why people enjoy it/feel like it's needed to use x emulator or y system.

document what youve done so you dont forget/ give yourself goals to accomplish when you’re depressed and playing games feeling meaningless and those points feel like something

Some people like the extra challenges. Some people like to use them as a sort of automatic journaling system for their games and like to look back at what they played and when. Some people like that achievements can point out game mechanics or secrets they wouldn’t know about otherwise.

Some people just think they‘re fun.

I’m the same way. I’ve never cared about achievements in games, but people love them. I don’t care about retro achievements either. 

Some people like the leaderboard aspect, some like using them as challenge guides, some like them as a record of what they’ve played… whatever, different strokes for different folks.

I have no idea what the psychology is, but there is definitely two types of people. Those who love achievements and those who don't. It's like marmite. I personally love achievements, it makes me feel good to see an achievement pop. It feels like progression of some sort.

But isn’t the game progression enough? I get it for secrets and such, but the base game doesn’t need that I think

I don't know, but for me I just like to see it. It might be a collector style mentality. Achievements are something you kind of collect, a bit like Pokémon cards. I guess its just a personal choice.

I tell my friends about it. Retro achievements are not only achievements it now also has leaderboards and rankings. Its a fun way to compete with childhood friends who live on the other side of the country.

Same reason I like getting achievements in modern games. I find it fun. Especially ones that are a challenge, like an achievement to beat a boss without taking damage or in a certain amount of time.

For me, it's just a quite nice feedback when I achieve something in the game, especially rare things. But not to show to anybodu else

For the same reason achievements exist on every console.

I installed it not because I care about retroachievements, but because it's easy to install and in case I want to make a game 100%

I think they are fun and now I might even try to do something extra while replaying an old game because there is an achievement for it. But I'm not an achievement hunter and I don't care about the leaderboards

I grew up in the era where bootleg famiclone was popular. Then ps1 and 2, then mostly pc. So i really don't feel like i i need achievements.

It's an interesting extra but Retroachievements also suffers from no offline mode, i'm often on the go or sometimes internet connection disappears. Or need to relog into it. I didn't choose emulators based on if it can do RA, but i did test it out. But i also have some games where i got progression so retroactively it doesn't give me achievements either.

A lot of the achievements also tend to be unfun or requires several replays. Or triggering it is kinda oddish. Like in gba fireemblem i have to check out units stat after joining me. Now i forgot to do this with a few of them. I also forgot to steal vip and the other membership cards too.

But i'm similar with Retroarch or frontends. Lots of people love it. I myself don't really care for those stuffs.
