Monthly Community Thread

Welcome to the r/Barrie monthly community thread, where we relax the rules about advertising and off-topic posts.

This post will be replaced on the 1st of each month.

This is where you can share:

  • Stuff that isn't directly related to Barrie, like national news or general chit-chat
  • Questions about local businesses and services
  • Classified-style ads: buying and selling, help wanted, garage sales, etc
  • Fundraisers and donation drives
  • Plugs for your personal project or local business (within reason)

Rant Here's what Barrie - Innisfil MPP Andrea Khanjin is focused on instead of answering our calls for INCREASED public transportation. Loser behaviour.

Cutting Metrolinx services to spend millions tearing down newly installed bicycle lanes that move people along for free.

She hasn't said a word regarding the continued gutting of the Barrie line though.

Might want to consider voting for people who don't actively make our lives worse.

Here's how to contact her:

Rant Barrie: Tell Metrolinx we are NOT okay with these continued GO train service cuts

Metrolinx’s Board of Directors meets September 10, and this is our opportunity to make sure they hear directly from Barrie residents.

Per the website Board Meeting section, emails and letters received at least 24 hours before the meeting will be provided to the Board.

The Barrie Line has already been gutted compared with the level of service Barrie deserves. Now Metrolinx is proposing to quietly and significantly scale back service even further.

And frankly, our elected leaders are failing us too. Our MPPs, mayor, council and Premier need to hear this loud and clear: you can’t remove bike lanes, reduce train service, expect people to RTO every day, and simultaneously expect us to keep pumping money into the economy.

Unless you're planning to provide every commuter with a car, along with a magic solution to gridlock, this is unacceptable.

We shouldn’t be accepting less. We should be demanding better.

If you rely on the Barrie Line, or simply believe Barrie deserves reliable, frequent transit, please take a few minutes to email the Metrolinx Board before September 10.

Email:

chair@metrolinx.co (be sure to add the "m" as I cannot add .com here for some reason)

ceo@metrolinx.co (be sure to add the "m" as I cannot add .com here for some reason)

Or write to:

Metrolinx Board of Directors

97 Front Street West

Toronto, ON M5J 1E6

Tell them clearly: we are not okay with service cuts on the Barrie Line. We need investment and improved service, not further reductions.

Please send your message by September 9 so it is received at least 24 hours before the meeting.

Even a short email makes our voices count. Please encourage your neighbours to do the same. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Upvotes

Hello! We’re visiting for a few days from Northern Ontario and were hoping to go to Wet N Wild tomorrow but it looks like we’ll be stormed out so are now looking for an escape room or other indoor activities. Please give any suggestions! We’re all adults but ideally not TOO horror, if you have specific room recommendations or know of a place extra immersive I’d love those, or anything with a cool gimmick!

Information September Pathfinder Gameday

Good morning everyone! I run a monthly Pathfinder Society gameday at Sir Games-a-Lot in the Bayfield Mall. Pathfinder 2e is a fun tabletop roleplaying game (like D&D) and games take 3-4 hours to play. There is no cost to play and no experience is necessary. We will have pre-generated characters you can pick up and use, or you can create your own in advance.

The next session is Sunday, September 6 from 11am - 3pm, at Sir Games-a-Lot in the Bayfield Mall (beside Bowlerama). If you're interested in checking it out you can sign up at Warhorn, below. Both tables are open to new players!

Rant My response from the Mayor's office re the worsening GO train services and upcoming gutting of the Barrie line (screenshot attached). I encourage people to continue to reach out to their MPPs Doug Downey and Andrea Khanjin. Nothing will be done if we don't advocate for ourselves.

Tbh I was pleased to see that they are in agreement that the cuts are not good and they are also reaching out to the province about this. I would still like to see more action from the city on this, same as other cities and their councils have advocated publicly for increased GO service.

Where are the news media on this? No news for days. Just quiet cuts to the Barrie line and our city bruised in service updates on the GO site.

I think it's in our best interest as a community to raise more awareness and make a lot of noise about this. No reason our lives should be getting worse and not better for living in Barrie.

How to read this

Simcoe Muskoka’s inspection records classify infractions as critical or minor. Those are the health unit’s classifications, not ratings I’m assigning.

I’ve also kept Corrected During Inspection separate from Not in Compliance. Corrected During Inspection means the issue was addressed while the inspector was there. Not in Compliance means the requirement was still recorded as non-compliant when the inspection was completed.

This roundup includes Barrie premises classified as Restaurant or Food Take Out, not every type of food premises inspected by the health unit.

Inspection results reflect what inspectors observed during that particular visit. They are a snapshot in time, and records can change as new inspections and follow-ups happen, so check the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit inspection portal for the latest information.

Rant Happy Sunday, Barrie! Friendly reminder to ask our local leaders why Barrie receives worsening GO transit services and zero advocating for the City of Barrie on the BARRIE line. Contact info included.

Already awful service expected to get even worse as of Sep 8. Fewer weekdays rides and pretty much non-existent train service throughout weekends.

https://www.gotransit.com/en/service-updates?mode=t&code=BR

Might as well advocate for ourselves since our local politicians and news do Nut all for us.

For the past few nights, the three street lights here seem to have been taken over by a dj. What's with LED lights and their tendency to do this? I see it happen a lot, but usually one at a time. Why do you think these three are tied like this?
