I'm sure it being cold and exhausted played a huge part, but it's gratifying how the deer lost it's fear pretty quickly when it becane apparent the guy wasn't going to hurt it.
The man doesn't conform to expected predator behavior, so the prey response stalls. It's confused, and doesn't know what to do, and so it does nothing. It's a relatively well known behavior from some animals who have just been rescued/pulled out of a stressful environment by people.
Obviously we will never know what goes through their head in those moments. But without anthropomorphize to much, I can only imagine its an insanely confused torrent of fear, stress, relief, and unknown expectation. Its head is probably full of a ton of conflicting emotions.
we do also see a phenomenon of some animals bringing injured young to humans, especially if humans have helped the parents somehow before. it’s a last ditch effort, but it can pay off
I always kind of think there's something that goes, Well, I'll try the Apex predator. It's a 50/50 shot whether I'm going to get eaten or healed. And if I don't do anything it's 100% that I'm going to die out here. So I might as well roll the dice.
Especially with deer. These same folks are probably the same guys that would put her in the meat locker if she were bigger, in season and not obviously trapped and in distress. And they aren't wrong either way.
I don't think "apex predator" really works in the sense you're using it here. Humans do function ecologically as apex predators - arguably even super-predators - but that's largely because of intelligence, cooperation, tools and weapons, not because an individual human is some terrifying natural killing machine.
A lone unarmed human is pretty poorly equipped compared with most large predators: no claws, mediocre teeth, no great sprint speed, and not much ability to kill a deer without tools.
And I doubt the deer is doing the evolutionary equivalent of "well, that's the apex predator, 50/50 it eats me or saves me." It probably just sees a large animal that would normally be a threat, but distress can override normal avoidance behaviour. The interesting part is that it tolerates or approaches the human despite that risk, not that it somehow recognizes our position at the top of the food web.
You know what, never thought about this before. Thanks for sharing. I do wish I knew what goes on through moth heads when I gently pick them up, do they even comprehend people as a creature in their tiny brains. I do remember someone sharing that for a spider even your 2 arms feel like separate entities due to size difference
While that is probably true for most spiders, and moths very likely don't recognize you as an animal, jumping spiders are intelligent enough and have good enough vision to understand that you are one whole entity.
Being a pursuit predator requires a level of intelligence much higher than the average insect or even web building spider. Object permanence, spatial planning, deception, trial-and-error, all traits exhibited by different species of jumping spiders. They are even capable of distinguishing between unfamiliar/familiar individuals and adjust their defensive/social behavior accordingly. They also display retina movement during sleep that suggests they might experience REM sleep and dream like we do.
And while most spiders have poor, near sighted vision, mostly relying on changes in light and vague shapes to navigate, jumping spiders have very sharp, clear vision up to several feet. Giving them the ability to keep your entire body/face in focus at once. This helps with the whole recognizing you as a single entity thing.
I removed a tiny little jumping spider carefully from my bedroom on an empty envelope and brought it outside and put it on our fence. It slowly came out of the envelope and turned to me and tilted its head and just stared for a bit before turning around and jumping off. Not sure what was going on in its tiny little head, but I thought it was a neat interaction.
I used to be absolutely terrified of spiders. I tolerate them now, and when they're in my apartment I try to scoochie them into something to take them outside.
The last time I saw a spider, it was crawling away from me . I said "do you want to go outside?" And I swear.. I swear to you. It paused and made its way back to me 😂 I know it was a coincidence, but it was pretty funny
I think we underestimate small critters. For spiders and bees it's known that they can differentiate between different people. Some critters also have remarkably good eyesight

My guess is at first she thought he was going to harm her, but when she realized he was trying to save her she calmed down and let it happen. Notice how she didn’t run after she was put back on solid ground and let him interact with her. She for sure understood that he was helping her.
Yes. Rachel and her sis was fighting because the sis wasn’t going to be considered an option to take Emma in the event Ross and Rachel died. A plate breaks and the issue is resolved. Then Chandler knocks the whole box over, shattering the rest of the set.

Someone once sent me a video I opened at work with my volume full blast (but I didn’t know my volume was on). To this day I can’t find this video or know what it’s from but it’s animated and someone spoke over it. Someone points to a hill and says “LOOK AN EARTH BONER!”
That was full blast in my cubicle and immediately got laughs. Luckily everyone was cool but I was also a new employee. lol
I was the first responder to a particularly horrific motorcycle crash. I laid with the dude trying to keep him calm and not let him move. (Trying to keep his neck supported. He was a...mess)
People were running around focusing on a million other things. One middle aged dude kept frantically yelling at me that my shirt was getting dirty because of the biker's blood etc. Just asinine things to be worrying about.
When the EMS arrived they thanked me and said something that's always stuck with me. One of the reasons why certain people are good in pressure situations (emergencies etc) is they focus on the actual problem. Other people (like this lady) get overwhelmed and see everything as part of that problem and try to fix it all.
I used to get so irritated by people like this camera lady. "Just shut up and let us focus on what actually matters." It's still annoying but I understand it a little better now.
(But yeah I audibly laughed when she started going on about the sledgehammer, like it actually mattered right then and there)
Honestly, if she had shut up the rest of the time and just said, “hey the sledgehammer is sinking” it would have been fine. It’s that she won’t shut up the rest of the time that it makes that comment seem asinine.
My grandma is like that. At this point I think it's just detrimental, because if she ever had a point with her concerns my brain would just filter them out like all the other stuff.
Even had to have a talk with my mom and tell her that she was beginning to act like my grandma, and that if she didn't stop I'd just instinctively start ignoring her too.
I'm still annoyed by her comments. like can you shut up and let him do it. the "sledgehammer" was completely useless and he was in no danger of drowning. maybe slipping and hitting his head
Yup. Ironic that she was telling him she was going to scare the deer. Like, lady, are you even listening to your shrill voice that won’t shut up? If that deer was scared of anything, it was YOU!

When you've fallen through the ice in the middle of a lake, you can't get out, because when you manage to pull your weight back onto the ice, the brittle border then collapses and you are back in a hole.
Rescuers bring a sledgehammer to break the ice all the way from your hole to land, which I believe is why he created the initial hole before leaving.
You don't typically pull the fallen victim out of the hole. You create a path for them to swim to shore.
They were supposed to use it to find where the ice is unlikely to break, then use it to guide the deer back the way they came -- where the ice is supposed to be more solid -- or use it to break through the ice so they don't waste energy trying to step onto it and are able to guide the deer that way.... But humans and touching furry creatures, especially young creatures.
Its aggravating in the moment because you interpret it as an annoying order or an unhelpful instruction, but she's really saying it as a gesture of love. A mother calls out to her baby repeatedly like that because she can't hold his hand, and this is the best she can do to in the moment to communicate to him that she's present and she cares. It just bursts out you almost involuntarily when you love someone and are worried they might get hurt. Takes a lot of maturing to realise that.
Reminds me of a time when I was younger and my brother rescued a man who was stuck in a rip current. I remember we told mom about it and she got very concerned. She told us she was glad he did the right thing, but also people get hurt and die trying to help those stuck in situations like that. When we are young, sometimes we leap into action with reckless abandon and it can put ourselves in harms way, so she warned us to always make sure we’re being safe and careful in those situations.
I thought about that here, she just wants to make sure he’s being careful and a little coaching or a reminder never hurts. I mean if he goes down, she might not be equipped to rescue him and it could really turn into something bad, so it never hurts to say those things. Would much rather have this than someone who doesn’t care.
My blood pressure was slowly rising the entire video because of that lady…she’s like my fucking mother. I can’t stand that shit. Like you get in there and do it then, lady….
Oh man! This is somewhere in the back of brain hidden. I'm not going to Google it. I'm going let it fester and gnaw at me all day, and when I put my head down on the pillow tonight, the answer to where this is from will just appear for no reason at all keeping me up another 4hrs as I think of other quotes from this movie.
A lot of us are used to domesticated animals. Wild animals don’t ask for scritches, especially from a predator like a human. The only exception would be an animal that was accustomed over time to being petted. The deer was frightened and unsure if it needed to fight. But we can be happy it’s alive and people are kind :)
Deer is probably very confused about what he is. It looked like it was heading off then turned around to signal "you coming?" As if the deer thinks he might be a caretaker
This was like learning there's a specific word for a feeling you've never been able to categorize and label before. A bunch of the internet is trash but this one's sticking with me for sure.
Can you imagine what would have happened if that lady wasn't there? The guy who took it upon himself to handle the situation entirely would have had NO idea what to do.

Mine does this too. Absolutely nothing can get done without her standing around in the way, stressing out and screaming for us to be careful. Any little movement causes her to gasp. It makes everything 10x more stressful. Also the constant "advice" which isn't helpful, especially when we're doing the heavy lifting. We're hot, sweaty, sore and tired and it's hard to be patient when feeling like that and having someone telling you the wrong thing and getting offended if you don't take their advice.
Same. My mother has this magical ability to transfer all her stress onto me. I've noticed I have almost the exact opposite response to a stressful situation where I kind of shut down emotionally and silently fix it. Which I think is probably a good but I've also gotten so sensitive to micromanaging in stressful situations that if someone tries it it's so hard not to snap/yell at them to shut up or something like WOW! I hadn't THOUGHT of being careful!! What a novel fucking idea!!
I don’t know much about animal rehab, but if they let it go without drying it off and warming it up, what are the deer’s actual chances of recovery and survival in the cold after being stuck there for a while and exiting soaking wet?
I assume fine, though the thought did cross my mind too.
Animals gotta survive harsh conditions, they can't make fire, they don't have coats.
I know a lot of furry friends have oil on their fur to repel water, what that does when you're soaked to the bone, I dunno, but I hope the little fella was okay.
