God damn, this is massive. How much would one like it cost?

484

u/NoTimeForCautionCoop 7d ago

I think I found this exact one online. Here is a piece of the article describing it and is cost:

https://www.bonhams.com/press_release/31158/

Weighing 14 metric tonnes and standing at 5 metres tall and 2 and a half metres wide, this vividly coloured geode is the largest amethyst ever to be offered at auction. Originating from Uruguay, the amethyst sparkles in various hues of lilac, rose and blue depending on the light shined upon it. To add to the colour, there is the presence of very rare yellow hemispherical calcite crystals. It comes to Bonhams Natural History Sale in Los Angeles on December 3, and has an estimate of $300,000-400,000.

If I were a billionaire things like this is how you would know.

66

u/Jindabyne1 7d ago

People spend a million on a baseball card, I’d get two of these instead

5

u/ShireXennial 6d ago

An excellent pair of bookends for the giant illuminated manuscripts I would commission.

52

u/Kind_Of_A_Dick 7d ago

I would fly blimps with my face over every event possible.  Just my face and a website with just my face on it and nothing more.  No product to sell, no reason to have the website beyond just having my face on it.  The absolute, most horrible waste of money in history.  Brewster has nothing on me.

9

u/Mr_Nerdcoffee 6d ago

I highly disagree. There isn’t a change in hell that this would be ended remotely considered the “absolute, most horrible waste of money in history”. I’m pretty sure the Commander-in-Cheeto takes the top 10, alone…

2

u/CelestialTrickster 6d ago

So, kiiiinda like Kanye did with his Superbowl commercial? Although he did try to sell a t-shirt...

2

u/Kind_Of_A_Dick 6d ago

Yeah, maybe.  No swastikas though.

Under half a million is way less than I expected.

Probably costs a five digit number just to get in shipped.

3

u/coolcootermcgee 6d ago

That’s what I thought

19

u/Current_Finding_4066 7d ago

Thanks. I am sure it will look great wherever it end up.

20

u/blade_torlock 7d ago

Probably a museum as a write off for someone, either a gift or a loan.

45

u/NeasM 7d ago

Or Dolly Partons headstone

14

u/always_lost1610 7d ago

This gets my vote

8

u/spike55151 7d ago

How much for the other half?

2

u/Loose-Combination918 7d ago

in rich countrys you could sell this even up to a million or more. i saw smaller once than this being sold 600k. it had the form of wings maybe that added value

3

u/Viniox 7d ago

I’m sure it would be worth more if someone didn’t get globs of spray foam all over it….

/s.

Amethyst itself is pretty common, but a geode of this size absolutely isn't. That said, these giant specimens aren't necessarily worth millions just because they're enormous. Their value depends heavily on the colour and quality of the crystals, how intact the specimen is, provenance, and whether it's a matched pair. Comparable museum-scale amethyst geodes several metres tall have sold or been valued in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, so I'd guess something like this could be worth a few hundred thousand USD, potentially considerably more if it's an exceptional specimen. The solid rock at the bottom also appears to be part of the original matrix, probably deliberately left there to support and stabilise several tonnes of geode.

I know a guy. I'll call him, have him come by and take a look and we'll go from there. Give me about 30 minutes.

Best I can do is...$75

5

u/FuckSticksMalone 7d ago

Assume this is a manmade geode. You can chemically bathe a surface and then bake it to make artificial geodes.

64

u/Guiness_Philosoph-21 7d ago

Came here for this.

Same. Thinking, I can’t be the only one who sees this…

Even in 2026 we are still obsessed with dick or phalic shapes like we were when Roman’s would sculpt penis on everything including the roads that pointed to brothels

For real, the nerve of artists using one of the most accessible mediums on the planet for sculpture. It’s not like rocks just grow on trees.

I want to see a photo of its new resting place, please. I've been looking at one in town for a long time, about 2 feet tall and $1300. Keep wondering if I should pull the trigger on it, or go to the Quartzite show next year. There are lots of options on eBay, many out of China, but you don't get to choose a specific example from some of the sellers. Any recommendations?

23

u/lurkinsheep 7d ago

If they have really had it sitting that long, you can probably haggle them down quite a bit on that price. I would go to the show to see if anything else calls to you more, then go back to that store and try to haggle on it if it were me. Can use the tan crystal cluster in the middle as a justification, it takes away from the eye appeal.

One of my exes was big into rocks/crystals. In our experience most of the stores are just small single owner hobbyists or family run places that are willing to negotiate, especially on stuff like this that can sit for years waiting for a buyer.

I would absolutely avoid ebay for the same reason you said, most of the sellers are just using good looking stock photos, with a disclaimer that the product received may not look the same.

23

u/VyrexGabi 7d ago

I have one also and put it in this corner. It’s about 150cm or 5 feet and weighs 130kg. It’s actually 2 piece so I had to buy both as the seller only sold it in pair or like as 1 whole stone. I shipped it from Spain to Austria. It’s really nice to look at. 1300€ is kinda expensive for that one tbf tho I would look for better ones imho.

9

u/Zwesten 7d ago

That's a decent cathedral, but I encourage you to go to Quartzsite instead. For 1300 you could get a piece with better color and more amethyst showing. I kind of like the calcite inclusions, but the rest is a little lacking. You'll get a much better deal in Quartzsite, and I'd recommend visiting Village Originals there (or in Tucson or in Denver during the show) they've got pretty good quality at good prices as they are a major importer

10

u/DefinitelyNotAliens 7d ago

Not a fan of the yellow crystals in the middle, myself. I'd focus on getting a specimen you really like, for that price point.

I'd look at online retail shops of physical stores based in the US, or hit a rock and mineral show and make sure you like that specimen. If they won't give you multiple shots of the piece you're buying, not worth it.

2

u/gurknowitzki 7d ago

Support you local community seller! I think that whitish quartz growing inside is a cool unique detail. You could highlight it with some accent lighting bottom up with a pedestal stand.

Im a DIYer. I would consider sinking the base for the piece into the pedestal for better stability. Perhaps a small vertical post behind the geode to make sure no accidents happen as well. Will look invisible, but provide decent protection.

I’d sink some light holes into the pedestal as well and run the wires and battery below. 3 horizontal lights, one for low middle and high accenting.

Cheers!

The longer they keep that door open the less valuable that's gonna be. Amethyst bleaches in the sun.

6

u/siemian_pun_here 7d ago

I've always been told the size of the geode doesn't matter.

6

u/stevesmd 7d ago

what's that orange stuff? looks like spray foam or something.

2

u/_Kutai_ 7d ago

They are known as Geodes. You can buy small ones almost everywhere, even amazon, or gift shops

2

u/NikolitRistissa 6d ago

They form in cavities within the bedrock. Geodes can be as large as this, but they can also be as small as cavities caused by gas bubbles in igneous rocks.

They’re essentially just cavities where the surrounding rock solidifies, dissolved silicates or carbonates are deposited on the surfaces, and eventually grow into crystals. Groundwater or hydrothermal solutions for example, bring in more minerals and they continue to grow.

As for this specific piece, no idea. Geodes can be found all over the world though.

6

u/xiahbabi 7d ago

We've seen extremely large specimens and there are enough floating around the earth at this point I just don't understand why continuing to dig up specimens of this size is necessary?

Can anyone tell me if there's just a ridiculous market for Ford F-350 size geodes that I don't know about?

6

u/Zwesten 7d ago

Surprisingly enough, there is definitely a market for pickup sized geodes out there. It's an active market as well. I work with big pieces including large amethysts (not this large, one of our competitors handles this size though) and we sell pieces weighing up to a couple of tons. The giant ones like the on in the picture don't sell as fast, but they definitely sell regularly. A lot of them go to UAE/Dubai etc some to museums and private estates in the EU or US. La Stage in Uruguay produces some of the best giant geodes
