I gave a wheelchair once to a beggar who could not walk. The bugger sold it within a week because people stopped giving him money while he was on a wheelchair. Sad reality.

Just have to leave it to the universe after you walk away, you did a good thing and made an effort. That's what really matters.

u/ParticularReady7858 6h ago
Definitely more likely to get money when sitting in a box, if I think about it. If the rest of his life is that hard, a partial upgrade may be more disruptive than anything else. Where he lives may not accommodate using a wheelchair.
2
u/SeedFoundation 2h ago
If he was a begger then yeah. This is like giving a homeless guy a make over thinking it would solve all his problems when in reality you just took away his income. If some guy looked well off and asked for change I sure as shit wouldn't give him a dime.

Ex-Leper: Okay, sir, my final offer: half a shekel for an old ex-leper?
Brian: Did you say "ex-leper"?
Ex-Leper: That's right, sir, 16 years behind a veil and proud of it, sir.
Brian: Well, what happened?
Ex-Leper: Oh, cured, sir.
Brian: Cured?
Ex-Leper: Yes sir, bloody miracle, sir. Bless you!
Brian: Who cured you?
Ex-Leper: Jesus did, sir. I was hopping along, minding my own business, all of a sudden, up he comes, cures me! One minute I'm a leper with a trade, next minute my livelihood's gone. Not so much as a by-your-leave! "You're cured, mate." Bloody do-gooder.
1
u/JustAMinah 1h ago
and it's kinda sad too, because society has this stereotype of what a "real" homeless person looks like and if you have any sort of valued possessions, well, you aint doing it right, supposedly. the many times I've read or head of people thinking everyone on the streets need to sell their iphones or laptops or something if they were really struggling fail to realize how important that device is just to be in communication that helps their situations.
43
u/u-must-be-joking 6h ago
Similar thing happened with me.
I gave my bicycle to a little boy who worked in the canteen.
Next thing I know, his father sold the bike to another adult worker in the canteen of a different hostel ;)
It was sad and hilarious at the same time.
Lesson learnt - charity is not easy.6
u/Ms74k_ten_c 5h ago
Yeah!! Charity is not gonna put out for any Tom, Dick and Harry! She has standards.
11
u/Latterlol 5h ago
This is what I think will happen to beggars that people pick up from the street, takes them to a hotell to let them shower, then to a hair salon to fix their hair and beard, and give them new clothes.. what happens after this? Don’t they go back to the streets? But now they won’t get anything because they look fine
10
u/Outrageous_Sink4295 4h ago
I had a homeless buddy in his late 60s I would bring food every once in a while about 20 years ago. You would have never known it by how clean he kept himself...but he didn't beg either. He would seek out work every day for cash and if he didn't find any, he'd be in the woods foraging. Taught me about PawPaw trees, how to gut, skin and cook animals. Taught me how to use black powder. He claimed the ones on the corners begging were just drug addicts who had no interest in getting clean or taking care of themselves.
0
u/Due-Memory-6957 2h ago
Even people at the bottom will try to put others down lmao
1
u/Zaximeows 2h ago
Speaking objective truth, it's not about putting anyone down. At least in America there are support systems in place to help people who need it most. The people that slip through those cracks are often, although not always, not interested in improving their lives. They just want to do more drugs until they die.
Between secular and religious support groups you can assuredly find a hot and a cot outside of prison. The biggest hurdle for most homeless people is that you need to be sober to start getting help. I've done my share to help those in need personally and will continue to, but you also have to understand the reality of the situation.
2
u/The-Senate-Palpy 1h ago
I wouldnt discount the shame factor. I dont exactly know a ton of people who have been homeless. But of the 7 im aware of, 3 absolutely refused to get any sort of help like that for fear/shame. 2 more refused for long periods of time before giving in.
1
u/Zaximeows 1h ago
For sure, that's partly why I left room for exclusion. But it also sounds like those people weren't on the corner begging with ragged cardboard signs, which are the types we're talking about. When I was younger I used to give weed to the beggars on the corners. They were always grateful, either they smoke it or sell it. But now with hindsight I feel pretty bad about it. Those people don't really need drugs, they need real help, and having someone just appear and give you drugs is probably the best way to break down somebody trying to get sober.
1
u/The-Senate-Palpy 1h ago
I mean yeah, dont give drugs to people. But specifically i disagree with the biggest hurdle being sober. The biggest hurdle in modern society isnt drug use. Id maaaaybe call it 3rd
10
1
u/Blaizefed 6h ago
That’s exactly what I thought. They will sell that and go back to the little box in no time.
0
u/fastlerner 5h ago
Also, folks would steal a wheelchair in a heartbeat where they'd ignore his wooden sled.
0
0
u/ProcedurePretend1396 2h ago
Yeah, our town has built a giant apartment building and cafeteria to help the homeless. Also a bus drives them around for temp work, interviews, jobs, until they are on their feet. We still have people at every street corner. They cant be trusted.

Haha. Right. Didn't catch the joke. I thought you were being cynical like a lot of other people on here. And now you get your rimshot.

It was confusing because you said “he.” The wheelchair is a “she.” Hope that helps.

This is the issue my mom and I have.
We’ve been doing donations and helping people forever, but people demand “evidence” or footage or something and ever since social media, we get much less donations and money than we used to because we refuse to film people in need.
We’ve had this discussion many many times…. If filming gets us more money and resources, is it worth it? Obviously we would get permission, but people might feel pressured and obliged to agree because we’re giving them clothes, food, and money… is it okay? I don’t know.
All I know is that we have continued to do our best, and we have only ever taken personal photos/videos and we refuse to film for the foreseeable future.
If we thought the benefits were big enough and we could help significantly more people, we might consider it seriously… but it’s just… fuck… yknow?!It’s hard meeting and speaking with people who have nothing, either after disasters here in FL or (it autocorrected to “Perverts in Jamaica who need clothes” and that’s hilarious lmao as if we’re forcing clothes onto naked Jamaican perverts. Hahaha) poverty in Jamaica… we always wish we could do more, but we’re broke. We rely entirely on donations because I have lung cancer and my mom has MS.. we’re broke af… but we’re still absolutely blessed and fortunate so we help. But we know filming could do more for them… so it just sucks either way. Either we feel like shit because we can’t do more, or we feel like shit because we feel like we’re exploiting people in need or people at the worst time in their lives…

u/Reflexlon 4h ago
When I was briefly homeless and sleeping in my car (I know, still way better than a lot of people) if somebody had offered to give me even a few weeks of comfortable shelter but they had to make a movie of my time or whatever, I would've agreed in an instant. Even faster if they said it helps them get funding to help other people too.
Maybe offer people the choice but say you are going to help them either way so they don't need to feel pressured?

While thats true of a lot of these vids I dont think thats the case here.
I feel like the benefactor made serious efforts to keep the interaction as respectful as possible.
He shakes their hands and always speaks to the disabled gentleman at eye level. He also makes sure to always keep his face turned away from the camera. This seems like a video meant to inspire people to either go out and do the same thing, or donate to someone who is. Not "look at what a great person i am, dont forget to like and subscribe!!!"
18
u/SuperKillo 6h ago
did you improve the life of someone like that man did? so sut the fu** up.
9
u/2074red2074 6h ago
I've done similar for people, yeah. I can't prove it though, because unlike him I didn't shove a fucking camera in the guy's face the whole time.
5
u/i-var 6h ago
it has pros and cons. Consent is key. Showing the world how good acts works has inspiring effects as well. But the summit is narrow - is it an act of ego or of help? Some sure misuse such acts but I'd say any real help is help - if it comes from a narcisist filming it gives it a bad taste but real help was still done - so not all of it is bad or should be condemned imo.
0
u/2074red2074 6h ago
I'm not saying he shouldn't give the guy a wheelchair. It's just that I don't view it as charity. If you're only giving because you get something in return, that's just a transaction. Essentially he got the guy to act in his film and paid him in less than $100 worth of stuff. Do you think he got more than $100 worth of clout out of this?

There is a Jewish story about a wealthy man who came to his rabbi and said "I have decided to build an orphanage, can you put me in touch with the relevant people"
The rabbi was delighted to do it, and introduced the man to some charities. After a few weeks, the man came back to the rabbi.
"I have decided not to build the orphanage," he said. "I realised that I was only doing it because I wanted to be admired as a philanthropist, my motives were selfish."
The rabbi answered, "do you think the orphans will care what your motives were? Build the orphanage!"

u/DontForgetTheDivy 51m ago
Tough call. If the views and clicks pay for improving others lives, some good comes from it. Still feels kinda gross though.
1
u/pinkgobi 3h ago
I don't care!! This video may inspire one other person to do an act of charity. If this man is filming only for the money and fame I don't care! I care that this man gets helped in the end.
I do charity in silence all the damn time, and I see these video as a necessary force. Let him spend money on the poor for clout or whatever
0
u/tourincinelli 6h ago
What have you done to help people in need?
-1
u/abdallha-smith 5h ago
A lot of things throughout my life.
Unfortunately i didn't film it to share it on social media
1
u/JustAMinah 1h ago
I work at a senior home. sometimes, the housekeeper may let me know of a walker he's about to toss out and if I want it. at first, it was mainly for me because I do have limited mobility at times and rarely but does happen, my whole body can shut down. but also, I had other coworkers or other people I know who are struggling to walk and such so I'll keep them in mind, and pass it off to them. I guess I was doing it wrong and it never happened since I never filmed myself doing it 😥
but just putting it out there, folks who have jobs that may toss out those kinda items that are very pricey. donate them to homes that can use them (never goodwill. that's making a profit off free stuff.) instead of dropping used clothes and shoes in those boxes, take them to a halfway home or group home or behavioral hospital, which will directly to the patient in need. (I just like sharing this info whenever this kinds topic comes up, because I was in a similar situation and those donated clothes in the hospital really helped me and I'm sure helps many more people in worse situations)
we all can be charitable in ways we never given thought to
-5
u/Affectionate_Mud_881 5h ago
Well, too bad. It doesn't count if you didn't film it. You suck, the guy that gave a $50 wheelchair to make $500 from the video rocks. I totally believe he gave the wheelchair btw. I have no suspicions that he may have given the guy $5 to act and took the wheelchair back afterwards.
3
u/abdallha-smith 4h ago
Cool story bro
-1
u/tourincinelli 3h ago
I sort of agree with affectionate_mud by filming it at least he gets the person viewing the video the push in the right direction. I can care less if the person filming it made money from this video because what he is interpreting and exposing to the world by handing a disabled man food, money and a mode of transportation allows the person viewing the video to find it in their heart and maybe just maybe do something nice for someone else. On the other hand you MR. Smith. You are the truly Evil person here. Trying to keep the world from seeing human kindness. You Mr Smith need to apologize to the viewer who genuinely found sympathy in this video and was encouraged to make a movement.

As long as the beneficiary consents, I don't see the problem.
Some people make videos that generate revenue and enable them to continue helping people as well as support themselves. Not much different than going to work to collect a paycheck for yourself, then helping others with the surplus.
The virtue signaling is insane.
40
u/818FunGuy 6h ago
If God came to me and said give your life to cure disabled people and drug addicts I would. Seeing people like this hearts my heart.
30
u/darkoj- 5h ago
That's Christ's entire message.
7
u/Threedawg 1h ago
Except it was not limited to those groups, the poor, the sick, anyone who struggled for whatever reason was included.
1
u/Substantial-Sea-3672 3h ago
That was what Jesus purportedly did for your afterlife (give up his life to let you not go to hell) but his message was definitely not “trade your life to cure disease.”

performing
is the key part
Everyone in this video is performing.
No idea what country this is in, but at least in Eastern Europe this is all for show. There are gangs/mafia of beggars that set up networks and do this strategically and intentionally.

Ya'll suck..
13
u/Archaros 6h ago
Tbf, he could do that without recording.
23
u/flamingotwist 5h ago
Or he could do it while recording? Demonstrate to the world what charity looks like as a counterpoint to the poisonous perspectives that we have to read every day.
I hate 'content', and I hate the fact that I watch it. But I'd rather it be this than the bile that gets churned out most of the time
4
8
u/Voidsore 5h ago
Since we have so much record of so many bad things, can't we have some good deeds recorded?
10
u/Otterbotanical 5h ago
These recordings are some of the only examples of human kindness that kids growing up with shit families ever see. I'm used to my uncle taking GLEE in shitting on people. If we drove past anyone on the street corner who was holding a sign for some kinda cause, he would roll down his window and start screaming about how they were all retards and if they would just get jobs, maybe they could fix whatever they thought was wrong with society. He's gay himself, but he sees the San Francisco pink triangle as "a bunch of faggots playing make believe".
There are people that simply drip with hate and take joy in shitting on others. Recordings of kindness are some of the only examples of kindness that people get.
0
u/Archaros 5h ago
I don't know...
When I see this kind of video, I can just hear the guy and the cameraman chatting like "See this guy with the box and the kid ? That'd be good content. Let's buy groceries."
3
u/Otterbotanical 5h ago
And that may be! My point is that even that level of action can still create legitimate good in the world, and it doesn't negate the good that befell the guy and the kid (unless off screen they turned around and took it all back or something).
You're right that giving altruistically and not recording it is empirically the best way to handle a one on one interaction. However, I still believe it gives a lot of good to have positive interactions like these available for viewing, for those of us that have so few examples of being kind to each other.
3
u/tony_two_eyes 4h ago
Fuck everyone with that logic. I see zero harm in people helping other people, content or not. How is it suddenly bad to profit(if one does) from such content? Best case - they keep helping more people with the money earned. Worst case - they have helped this one guy and somebody on the internet saw it and maybe too helped someone.
2
u/flamingotwist 3h ago
Agreed. We all need jobs, we all need money. If you can find a way to make money by doing good things, then that's surely the goal

If i was a billionaire, I'd hire tons of people to got out into the world and do things like this. I don't need cars, yachts, houses...just keep asking folks to step up and find ways to help their fellow man. Maybe not the smartest way to be charitable but I feel like there's no better way to teach humanity to humans than by making them step up and help a stranger.

Is this guy supposed to be his dad? If so, how? How did he do it? (Aside from being done by Ai)
4
u/Euture 5h ago
You went straight to assuming it was AI without considering that the man could possibly be his uncle, another family member, or a family friend. You also didn’t consider that he may have a disease that progressively caused him to lose bodily function. The man looks old enough to be a grandfather, so it’s entirely possible that a condition like that had decades to progressively affect his body.

That's just silly logic. Shit like this drives donations. You think they filmed poor kids while telling you a quarter a day will save a child's life for fun? What's pathetic is seeing charity and talking shit about the person providing that charity.
