Bend man faces 13 charges in string of store burglaries, car break-ins

Most of you have probably heard or read about this arrest. One of the blessings of my tiny one-man-band is the time to, for example, look up a suspect's criminal history, report on the initial formal charges (which can quite often vary from the arrest charges, for a variety of reasons).

So I'm reading a book called "The Next Journalism" by Tom Rosenstiel, and it's building on what I've already hear: Journalism needs to adapt to the changing times and listen to what the community's issues are, what people want to hear more about and how we can literally help you. I've ridden the tide of daily news for most of my life, but I can and will pivot! In what ways ... I'm open to hearing what you'd like to know more about, etc. Thanks for your support.

Wine club search

Hi friends! I’ve been wanting to join a wine club for a while now and was wondering if this community had any suggestions on their experiences or favorite clubs in Bend. Most recently was looking at Jackson’s Corner for their emphasis on natural and small producer wines but am open to anything!

Comedy this weekend! Come hang!

If you hear uncontrollable laughter roaring out of your favorite venues across this Bend this weekend, don't be alarmed! This Friday kicks off the 2nd year of the Bend Comedy Festival! I'm one of the organizers of the festival (non-biased), and I wanted to share a bit about the upcoming weekend of festivities with our fellow Bend redditors!

To catch you up: we put together a comedy fest in Bend for the first time last year with basically no idea what to expect, and it sold out. Downtown Bend was buzzing with laughter for three days straight, and it kind of blew our minds. Afterward, we had comics who've toured all over the country tell us Bend crowds were some of the best they've performed for. A few of them specifically asked to come back. That doesn't happen everywhere and it made us so grateful to be in Bend.

So we're doing it again! September 4-6, and honestly going bigger than we probably should for a team our size. This year's lineup includes Fahim Anwar, Cristina Mariani, Geoffrey Asmus, ASSSSCAT, plus a ton of up-and-coming comedians from around the country who are genuinely some of the best you'll see before they blow up. The schedule consists of  20+ shows across venues around town (Tower Theatre, Volcanic, The Capitol, Open Space).

Here's the thing though: this is a 100% volunteer-run nonprofit with a veryyyy small crew. There's no big production company behind this, no corporate sponsor bankrolling it. It's a small group of people who love comedy and love this town, doing this because we think Bend deserves to be a real stop on the map for great comedy.

Central Oregon is clearly hungry for this. You could feel it last year, the energy in those rooms was unreal, and there just aren't a ton of chances to see national-level comedy without driving hours. We're just trying to make Bend a real place for it.

We have full festival passes that get you into everything all weekend, which is the best bang for your buck. We're also selling single tickets if folks just want to catch one show. bendcomedyfestival.com. We want our shows to be accessible to everyone in Bend, so we are donating hundreds of tickets to nonprofits and community partners (comment if you have a recommendation for a group who would benefit from this!). Additionally, if pricing is a barrier we encourage you to reach out via email and we'll work with ya!

Either way, if you love comedy, please check us out. This whole thing exists because Bend really showed up last year, and we're so excited to be able to do it again.

Happy to answer any questions in the comments!

Missed Connection - Home Depot Parking Lot

TL:DR - To the guys in the Ram who rolled up on me in the HD parking lot and apologized for an incident on 97N and told me to have a good day, thank you.

Long version:

I was driving, pulling a trailer N on 97 coming up on Empire. I could see enough of a gap in the cars getting on the highway that I didn't need to move to the left lane. A Ram came up on the car that had merged in front of me from the on-ramp, boxing me out and forcing me to move over. I beeped at them and moved over.

We both ended up in at HD and while I was loading my trailer they rolled up on me and said sorry about the incident saying "I hope you have a better day".

Typically, I would have ranted here about an uncourteous RAM owner with all the stereotypes, but you flipped the script and allowed me to pull back, reassess the moment, and not judge you. I have no idea who you are or what was going on in your life, and yet you allowed me the opportunity to think better of people.

Because of your grace I did have a much better day. Thank you for reaffirming why I love living in Central Oregon.

Disingenuous companies?

I’ve met with quite a few company’s here in the area looking for a new job. (I’ve already found one that was a perfect fit that matched my previous salary that I accepted just inquiring of the state of the local job market.)

I was overqualified for most of these, managing much larger workload but was looking to move out of the field positions, and into the office. Also willing to take a massive pay reduction due to some recent changes

Multiple times, the interviewers were unprepared and didn’t know what to do for most of the time. Though the biggest red flag is them offering much lower than what their ad noted or what they told me that they were approved for.

One very large company told me they would pay 80k; but only ended up offering 60k; whilst another offered 16k lower as well. Are these outliers or is this common practice in the area?

Arborist Rec

I have a mature birch that lost 1/3 of its root system last fall due to a trench cut near it.

I need an ISA Certified/TRAQ arborist to assess prognosis, structural risk, and whether the decline is consistent with construction-related root damage.

We’ve had Central Oregon Tree Experts out. They’re lovely, but I need an expert who can help spend some time assessing my tree.

Any recs?

I haven't seen this full a council agenda in some time (though I'm not tracking as closely as I used to, for various reasons). Also please note: the council has a roundtable with developers at 4 pm today. I have a link to that agenda/livestream.

Recommendations for a mechanic that is OK with "owner supplied parts"

I need some work done on my car, I ordered all the parts thinking I would have the time and space to do it myself, but I just can't seem to make it happen. I'd rather just pay somebody to get it done at this point, I would love to use all the parts that I already ordered, but I know that could be kind of a touchy thing for some mechanics.

Radiant Waxing

Does anyone know what is going on with Radiant Waxing? They have had to cancel multiple appointments for me due to staffing issues. I know 3 of those cancellations were because someone quit. I guess I’m mostly curious if they staff are being treated fairly so I can decide if I want to continue using their business or try elsewhere

Transportation experts, users, and advocates from across the state and political spectrum are working together to build an achievable and comprehensive vision for Oregon’s transportation system. The Rebuilding Our Transportation Vision Workgroup (Workgroup) is reviewing transportation needs, funding challenges, priorities, and tradeoffs to provide recommendations that will inform action in the 2027 legislative session. The Workgroup plans to focus these recommendations on affordability, accountability, safety, and economic vitality.

Seeking: glute gains

Hi, yes, I want a better ass. I am trying to regain some traction in my mobility practices in general, but I have some learning to do when it comes to strength training as my background is mostly in yoga. I am already working on reestablishing an almost daily yoga practice, looking into some different studios to try out.

I am not against a full body workout by any means, I do really want to put some effort in the wagon tho. Also with the snow season (hopefully?) showing up this year, it would be nice to have some lower body work put in before I get on my snowboard and realize how out of shape I am.

Any raves on local personal trainers or group classes with a lower body focus?

Euros

A group of us Bend (ish) folks are going to Spain for a few weeks and we're looking at getting some Euros, and the exchange fees (selling and buying) have gotten rather high.

Is there anyone interested in selling Euros at the current exchange rate to avoid exchange fees? We both win. DM me with the amount you'd like to sell. (More than 500).

Thx!

Missed connection -- 100 mile Convoy

I don't think I've ever driven behind someone for 100 miles and been soooo pleased to follow them. It felt like I was driving behind myself. Almost everything they did and how they drove was just how I do it. They even slowed down at all the speed traps I knew about.

Me in my shitty Subaru, you in your BMW X3. I was right behind you from Mill City to Bend Saturday night. We entered Bend together just after midnight but our paths finally split when I got on the parkway following the NW Mt. Washington Drive traffic light. I tried to wave when we stopped briefly at the light by Petco, but the light changed quick.

I was super tired from a long day and a long drive, but you kept me awake and alert, but moreso entertained. It can be a super fun length of road, but there are always other drivers getting in the way. You were a phenomenam exception. I haven't had that much fun driving in a long time. I hope you had as good a time as I did. I owe you a high five or a coffee or something.

[Edit to get a better Anglish grade]
