Archaeologists at Numeira identify three basic elements in reading occupation in this landscape: wall, water, and material evidence. What interested me was what happens when that same landscape-first logic is followed beyond Sodom and into the Transjordanian highlands.
I've been extending a terrain-first GIS investigation of the Jabbok/Wadi Zarqa into central Transjordan, and I've reached a question I'd particularly like archaeologists working on Bronze and Iron Age Jordan to challenge.
The textual trigger was simple:
What happens to Lot's household after the destruction represented in Genesis 19?
Lot withdraws from Zoar into the highlands. The narrative subsequently bifurcates his household into two named peoples: Moab and Ammon.
Deuteronomy 2 preserves a different kind of tradition. It associates those later territories with predecessor populations:
- Moab → Emim
- Ammon → Zamzummim/Rephaim
I'm therefore testing a narrow proposition:
I am not using the textual genealogy to locate archaeological sites.
I'm doing the reverse.
Terrain first
The proposed workflow is:
- establish Bronze/Iron Age settlement chronology independently;
- derive hydrology and watershed structure;
- map perennial springs and significant wadi systems;
- identify movement corridors and constrained basin entrances;
- examine continuity, abandonment, relocation, and aggregation;
- introduce later Ammonite/Moabite settlement distributions;
- compare the observed patterns against terrain-matched controls.
This matters because "people settled near water" isn't a useful result.
The question is whether settlement relationships with water, corridors, relief, and catchment position change measurably between periods.
There is already reason to test it.
Timothy Harrison's survey analysis of the central Jordanian highlands documented shifting settlement organization, including concentrations along wadi systems and perennial springs and subsequent changes in settlement hierarchy.
Eveline van der Steen's work in the central east Jordan Valley documented another relevant process: following the breakdown of the Late Bronze Age regional network, socioeconomic organization changed and population movement occurred from the plateau through the Wadi Zerqa into the valley.
Neither study identifies Lot, Moab, or Ammon as the cause of those processes.
That's precisely the point.
They establish independently that settlement reorganization, corridor movement, and changing political-economic organization occurred in this landscape.
What would make the model fail?
If:
- predecessor and later settlement distributions are materially indistinguishable;
- water/corridor relationships disappear under matched controls;
- archaeological chronology contradicts the proposed sequence;
- or the evidence favors continuous local development without the reorganization the model requires;
then the archaeological component does not support the political-memory hypothesis.
I'm particularly interested in recommendations for survey datasets, settlement gazetteers, hydrological datasets, and Bronze-to-Iron Age regional studies that would improve the control design before I run the larger comparison.
