New small show?

Did anyone see this? https://www.ticketmaster.com/event/09006513CFA1C765?tt_scene=anchor_view

The show is tonight, and it looks like it’s a super intimate event in the Vinyl Room at the Hollywood Palladium. I’m seeing a capacity of only around 100 people.

Bill Burr at the Great Outdoors Comedy Festival: Funny in Parts, but I Walked Away Disappointed

I used to absolutely love Bill Burr. He felt like a breath of fresh air during a time when comedy was becoming increasingly cautious and politically correct. One of the things I always appreciated about him was that he seemed willing to go after everybody, regardless of which side they were on.

This show felt different.

He opened with a run of jokes aimed pretty heavily at conservatives and right-wing politics. They didn’t seem to land particularly well with the crowd, and to his credit, he appeared to recognize that and pivot. The middle of the set was much more like the Bill Burr I remember, and I laughed quite a bit.

What lost me was the ending.

He started taking shots at Christians. And to be clear, I’m Christian and I’m perfectly capable of laughing at jokes about Christianity. There is plenty of material there, and I don’t think comedians should have to treat religion as off-limits. But there’s a difference between making a clever joke about a group and sounding like you genuinely dislike the people you’re joking about. This felt closer to the latter.

Then he made a really crass joke about Charlie Kirk. Given how recently Kirk was killed, that one just felt unnecessary and over the line to me. You don’t have to like Kirk, agree with him, or think comedians should avoid dark subjects. But making a punchline out of someone who was murdered so recently felt more mean-spirited than funny.

That was ultimately my problem with the show. It wasn’t simply that Burr made fun of conservatives, Christians, or people I happen to agree with. I’ve always liked him precisely because nobody was safe. What bothered me was that some of the material felt less like irreverent comedy and more like genuine contempt.

More broadly, I walked away feeling like Burr’s whole perspective has changed. Maybe that change is sincere, but from the outside it increasingly feels like his opinions have shifted toward whatever position is safest or most profitable for where his career is now. Fair or not, that is the impression the show left me with, and it made the whole thing feel less authentic than the Bill Burr I used to enjoy.

I definitely walked away disappointed, and I wouldn’t plan to see him again. I miss the Bill Burr who seemed irritated with everybody equally and didn’t seem particularly interested in whether his opinions were fashionable.

I can't defend him anymore

For the last 2 years or so there's been a lot of people banging on about how Bill Burr has "gone woke" etc, and I've always defended him since I've seen every special multiple times and never saw this "radical" transformation manifest in any of his jokes. I think he's always steered away from blatantly political stuff or specifically giving a signal that he's on one side.

And let me just state that I've always held him up as one of my GOATs. His storytelling during a special is second to none. Call backs, timing, cadence, all of that for me is one of the best ever - and STILL is. But I finally saw him live 2 days ago in Vancouver and the tide had turned.....

I didn't count exactly but there was at least 3 or 4 "jokes" (no one laughed) about "white male privilege" and old white billionaires, Elon Musk, and to top it off even a Charlie Kirk joke, that again, no one laughed at. Keep in mind that Vancouver is probably one of the most left leaning cities on the planet - no one laughed at these jokes. And listen, I am a free speech absolutist. If you want to make jokes about anything you want, go for it. Nothing is off the table for me - but that doesn't make all jokes funny 🤷🏻‍♂️

I've never found humour about disabled/handicapped people funny. It's low hanging fruit and I think the sign of a bad comedian who can't come with anything better to make jokes about. Same thing goes for Trump: low hanging fruit, lame, too easy. And I think the same is these tropes about "white privilege" etc. No matter if you agreed that it exists, it's cheap humour and just lame imho. We go to comedy shows as a form of escapism, not to have the talking points of the news shoved down our throats even more.

To be fair to Bill, when he stuck to his regular, storytelling type of humour about life's struggles and his take on it, he was fucking funny and those jokes had everyone laughing. But the guy HAS gone woke and I won't defend him anymore for being non-politcal. When half your jokes are about a leftist talking point, you're on the decline. Be better. It's sad to see one of my comedy heroes fall so far into the trap.

Help me find a bill burr clip from his podcast, pre-2020

There was an episode of the Monday morning podcast where Bill responds to a ladies letter where she's complaining about her partner not doing enough for her.

At one point in the letter, the lady says her partner takes her out to a restaurant once a week, which she describes as "standard." Bill goes off on a rant at this.

This would have been recorded pre 2020.

If you can tell me the episode, I'd be grateful!
