That guy was having a severe psychotic break that was induced likely by marijuana, of all things, bath salts were just blamed because they were dominating the zeitgeist at that point.
It's really depressing that's what's genuinely happening. Like they know damn well what they are doing, but they care more about profits now than the chaos and destruction that's going to happen possibly after they are dead. They don't care if their grandchildren all suffer and die, they are going to be able to afford a second private jet right now.
Worst part is they are required to do this by law. Failure to put profit above everything else can and will get a CEO in legal trouble or at least fired. In the 1960’s several oil companies signed off on a letter to congress basically saying “please regulate us now because we are fucking things up and we cannot and will not stop unless we are forced to”
I thought it was the shareholders they were required to prioritize, not profits? And it's just that shareholders these days will sue anyone who isn't profits-first.
Yeah, it's nearly the same thing, but the nuance means it's not just the laws that are broken, it's also people. It wouldn't be an issue if the shitgoblins who own majority stake in everything weren't competing with each other to put A S S at the top of the leaderboards.
Specifically its stock value which yes benefits the shareholders. When I say profit I meant increased shareholder value which is not the same yeah, though there is also a mode of running a corporation where you prioritize profit and stock value stability over raw stock value because you can dish out excess profit as dividends and that’s also legal to do. Basically the same thing though yeah, and it’s become less common since stock buybacks became legal again cuz now all excess profit goes into pumping up stock value with buybacks.
Except they're not required, not really, because long-term planning is allowed. Nothing legally stops these CEOs from saying "our net worth is going to go down for the next five years because that way we can make you lots of money in 20 years when we still exist" but that would trigger a massive selloff since the stock market is all just high-frequency bots shaving pennies every millisecond, and nobody cares about anything more than three months in the future anymore.
The thing stopping them is that the definition of “prioritizing shareholder value” is subjective and would need to be argued in court and it’d be 1 rich asshole CEO vs a government agency designed to ensure the system keeps working this way and a board of dozens of rich asshole stakeholders. CEO loses everytime, especially if you compare the stock trend of the company “looking to the future” vs the ones saying “fuck everything fire half the staff and drill more oil”
Worst part is they are required to do this by law.
That's not why they are doing it though. CEO's routinely break the law.
The real reason is the threat of losing their position (as you pointed out), or just poor greed or power maximization in the case of CEOs who effectively have a controlling stake, like Mark Zuckerberg.
In the 1960’s several oil companies signed off on a letter to congress basically saying “please regulate us now because we are fucking things up and we cannot and will not stop unless we are forced to”
I'm not familiar with the exact case, but I suspect this was a publicity stunt. They were actively producing misinformation at the same time, something no court would have demanded them to do, in the name of maximizing shareholder value.
So yeah, "we are required by law to be socially destructive" seems to be an excuse more than anything else.
The wealthy have complete control of the system and can follow or break laws as they please, so yes it serves as a convenient excuse more than any real barrier (though the one time wealthy people do face real consequences is when they attempt to fuck with the money, because it results in other capital owners coming after them). And industries have shown the ability to self regulate when desired / needed such as the film and TV industry. My point is simply that the purpose of a system is its outcome, and it is very easy to see how every aspect of the world we live in is built to ensure that the machine of capital continues to grind its way through society until nothing is left. It’s not that individual bad actors are ruining things for everyone, if they tried to stop the machine they would be replaced by someone else, it’s that in order to become anyone important enough that you could even theoretically have an impact on the system you basically have to prove that you would never turn your back against capital. Sure sometimes people slip by (depending on your standards that could be people like Mamdani, Sanders, Mehdi Hasan, etc.) but they are often still crushed or corrupted in some way (Sanders being robbed of the nomination in 2016 and being pretty shit on Israel, Hasan being fired for Palestine support, etc)
Nah, nothing about fiduciary duties requires f*cking over humanity.
Because what they've done is pay for laws that defray and even disappear their responsibilities on other fronts. If corporations had to actually pay for the costs of what they do, ruining the planet and risking global environmental and economic collapse would cost WAY more than reasonable and rational corporate stewardship.
Our laws are human choices not laws of physics. And choices that have been paid for by the people profiting from them.
They think AI can replace the poors, but the reality is that AI is extremely economically unproductive, and the infrastructure and manufacturing base that mass automation requires is decades and decades away.
We can’t figure out how to build high speed rail and affordable electric vehicles in the US, but somehow we’re going to automate the entire trucking industry?
Our power grid is already failing to keep up with shitty 10 second AI video generators, but somehow it’s going to replace every other industry? The AI that struggles to count to 100?
"The bank—the monster has to have profits all the time. It can’t wait. It’ll die. No, taxes go on. When the monster stops growing, it dies. It can’t stay one size."
The amount of times I've solved a headache or extreme fatigue with a couple glasses of crisp cold water is in the dozens. I figure a lot of people who deal with similar problems could probably use a couple glasses themselves.
Bro genuinely... for a long time I neglected hydration for some reason and was only really pounding water if I was exercising/sweating or sick. I was legitimately amazed how much it would wake me up from midday fatigue and sluggishness if I just drank 8-16 oz every hour or two. Was telling my friends about it like I discovered a miracle drug or something lmao.
I think this refers more to those giant nalgene bottles. Some people really do drink those on top of coffee/hydrating foods and their pee is clear, and they think " wow! I am the picture of health!"
I mean… they’re very likely to have healthier kidneys and bowels than people who don’t drink lots of water.
I’m not really sure what you’re trying to say here. I don’t think anyone has ever implied that drinking lots of water is the only thing you need to do to be healthy.
Actually, no. That's not the case at all. Over-hydration is very damaging to the kidneys. I have several patients on dialysis, in their 30s, and each of them used to drink a couple gallons of water a day.
People need to learn moderation, that's all there is to it. Extremes of any kind can damage your health.
Telling you this now, because when your kidneys go, you'll realize just how little water you can live on.
edit: OP rephrased their comment without an edit note so this looks out of place, but it's still relevant. Don't over-hydrate either folks.
I guarantee you that they did not end up on dialysis from having a high fluid intake/keeping well-hydrated. I am a bit concerned that you have some patients on dialysis and think/believe this?! What is your role with these patients…?
Having a persistently high fluid intake does not cause chronic kidney disease or any structural/functional renal damage.
Drinking two gallons of water throughout the day doesn’t damage kidneys or cause CKD. That’s only 7.5 liters of water and kidneys can process about a liter per hour. Likely you’re mixing up cause and effect.
Early-stage or undiagnosed CKD frequently causes extreme thirst (polydipsia). When kidneys begin to fail, they lose their ability to concentrate urine. They must flush out massive amounts of diluted water just to excrete normal bodily wastes. This drives the patient to compulsively drink gallons of water to stay hydrated.
each of them used to drink a couple gallons of water a day
Okay, well the image is talking about 40oz water bottles, not multiple gallons. So yeah, the person drinking a Nalgene a day has better kidneys than someone who doesn't.
The primary danger of acute overhydration in a healthy person is not kidney failure, but **hyponatremia.** This happens when water is consumed faster than the kidneys can filter it (> 1 liter per hour), diluting the sodium in the blood and causing rapid, dangerous brain swelling.
Yeah anyone who has worked doing manual labor in the summer outside knows that experience of drinking an insane amount of water but not pissing once all day lol. It's a weird feeling when you realize how much you drank and how you never needed a bathroom break.
I’m in recovery and I basically drink water like 👍 did beer. Constantly. I feel weird without a drink in my hand lol. But it’s not necessarily for the health benefits although water instead of alcohol is the better option. Actually when I first got sober, I was drinking a shitload of Mountain Dew but that definitely was not much better than beer lol. So water it is for me. When I was actively drinking it was just water or beer so I’m making some progress
Peeing clear isn't really a bad sign. Pretending that hydration is the only thing you need to be healthy, I guess? Is anyone actually saying this or are people just proud of themselves for drinking more water?
I mean coffee is a strong diaretic, you should definitely drink water with it, and recommended intake for a day is 3l of water. If you actually drink that a day, your body definitely notices when you stop, frequent headaches and fatigue, I work out a lot and drinking that much water isn't really optional.
The water within coffee hydrates you far, far more than the diuretic effect dehydrates you. Two cups of coffee is not a 1:1 comparison with water in terms of hydration, but its very close.
This also applies to food. Around 25-30% of our total water intake is through food.
I am unfortunately one of those people. lmao. 3-4 without trying daily. 💀 I’m aware I’m drinking too much but I end up drinking a whole one with each meal and then accidentally drink too much.
Please do, my brother recently one day told me that he’d been drinking gallons of water a day from constant thirst, explained to him that’s not normal, he want to his Dr and they sent him to the emergency room cuz his blood pressure was “Heart could explode any moment” levels (like 290). Turns out it was diabetes.
You're not drinking too much water, that's ridiculous. If you are thirsty, drink. That person doesn't understand what they're on about, and they're blowing it way out of proportion anyway.
I was like this when I had medication-induced dry mouth. it has gotten a bit better but I drink too much water with my food and have clear pees at least half the time
I live in Arizona. I drink at least that much a day when I'm doing anything outside. Likely push double that during strenuous times. Keep the electrolytes up too. Stay hydrated homie.
Part of me thinks "okay, maybe cut back on the water" isnt a terrible message since my wife carries one of those giant reservoirs with a town's name on it everywhere she goes
I literally realized the cause of my cluster migraines as a child was from being consistently dehydrated. Thought it was heat intolerance, no I just still didn't drink enough but now I'm sweating so extra dehydrated. So yeah, chugging a nice glass of water can really help as I feel a headache coming on lol. Shit.
As someone who works grilled/saute with two ovens, I’ll drink all the water I want. I refill my Stanley several times a day and I almost never have to pee.
Whats been the average temperature of your kitchen the past couple months?
My bosses don’t really know shit about kitchens, one of the guys is in tech, and he was like, if I want my office to be comfortable, I’m pretty sure you guys would, too, and so the hottest it’s gotten in our (relatively) new shop is 78°F
man when I drove for amazon I could easily drink a gallon and a half of water in a 10 hour shift. it's fucking 105f in the back of this van motherfucker, im gulping icewater like a sweaty hungover linecook double fisting his quart container
I used to work at a factory running a hydraulic press that was like 400 degrees. It was loud and hot af in there. I think I was killing close to a gallon on an 8 hour shift.
I think they are implying the bottle is refilled. You also forget, the average adult down at least one cup of coffee a day, fruits and vegetables such as melon and cucumbers are also hydrating, and many foods naturally are rich in water ( such as soup or a bowl of cereal).
Most people are not hydrated enough. Average male should be drinking around 110 ounces and women should be drinking around 80. That's assuming you're getting ~20 ounces of water in you regular diet. Coffee counts, but only about 85% of it because it's a diuretic and causes your body to flush out ~15% of the water you consumer as coffee.
Actually, studies showed that people who consume caffeinated beverages regularly actually develop a tolerance to the diuretic effects, so this isn't true for most people.
I'm also curious where you found that 15% number, I haven't seen that before.
The more used to being hydrated your body gets the less often the pregnancy-like-peeing comes! Weird but that always happens to me if I go through a funk and spend a few weeks not drinking the way I should and get back in to it lol.
Scratch that and reverse it. Your body weight in pounds, divided by 2, equals ounces of water needed per day. I need 80 oz a day, which is totally doable. I absolutely notice when I don't get it.
Then I only need 58oz. I never feel that good if I drink over 64oz. I also have naturally low BP and have to be careful because if I drink too much water without enough salt that day I feel awful.
Also, if you eat fairly well and drink other stuff, you also get hydrated from that. All the fruit, veggies, tea, plant milk and tofu I eat provides hydration.
Probably a dangerous amount even. That's over 3 gallons for a 200lb man. You'd probably crash your electrolyte levels drinking that much water every day.
there's no way to have a normal recommended amount. I live in a climate where half the year the overnight low is over 25c. I need to drink double what I've needed to in a cool climate.
and when exercising my sweat rates is over 1l/hr exercising. in the cool it's half that.
My god! Being dehydrated can cause a host of health issues: anxiety, skin problems, joint problems/pain, kidney stones and/or failure, UTIs, DEATH! This is pure propaganda and apathy is not going to solve anything.
I’m taking Lithium right now and when I saw this article drop yesterday I legit started laughing and said out loud “fuck you I don’t need water” 🤣 if I get dehydrated I could stroke out and/or just die from lithium toxicity lmfao.
Well, let me see here. They fucked up the economy, the climate, the country, the housing market, the concept of a pension, and just about everything else. So I think that can fuck right off when it comes to my water bottle unless they plan on fixing all that shit.
Not just boomers. I work with this one zoomer finance type bro in my office and he negs people all the time on their water bottles (why is it so big, why do you drink from a straw, why’s it such an obnoxious colour) and says why can’t you just use a cup or glass.
I’ve never seen him drink a glass or cup of water ever, just coffee all the time. It’s kinda weird to have this hang up. Tried explaining to him that it’s a bit hard to take a glass in my car, but he said just buy bottled water. He has no clue.
I’ve shut him down a few times. I often will drink from my bottle and go ‘oooh fresh hydrating water’ or something equally obnoxious just to try to piss him off.
You should just whisper “she was right” to him every once and again when no one else is around and then pretend like you have no idea what he’s talking about.
The fuck I am. I need 88 oz of water minimum, 16 of those with an LMNT packet, and a magnesium pill at night so my body doesn’t dehydrate while I sleep and get those calf cramps that make you jump out your bed. YALL hydrated enough, not me
Edit: y’all, relax. 88 oz is the recommended amount of water. Same for magnesium. The LMNT packet is because I sweat a lot. My kidneys are fine lol
Just in case you ever need to know: Yellow mustard is good for those cramps. I don’t know why. But if you need to, hold your nose and power through a spoonful of yellow mustard.
From what I have read it is basically this kind of. The pickle juice thing, mustard, and a few other things A1 does it for me. Basically the flavor shocks your tastebuds and gets your body to kind of forget the cramp.
It must work, I see so many athletes use it when cramping and they’re magically fixed in five minutes. I do love pickle juice, but normally when it’s attached to actual pickles.
Oh it definitely works. Only way you can consume that much salt and electrolytes without pissing it out your backside in such a small amount of fluid. To get the same dose of electrolytes, you'd basically need to combine it with too much water to effectively deliver it to your muscles and tissues. And since it's in fluid as juice, your body soaks it up really quickly, compared to eating a similar dose of electrolytes in kiwis or nuts. Each other method also works pre or post workout, but pickle juice is undeniably the king for intraworkout.
Sounds like you have some other health issues/other circumstances then. I work manual labor in a warehouse with shitty at best AC and don’t need all that
Absolutely. It’s why I’ve started an indoor garden, collected canned goods, and am learning to can food. Also have started picking up a gallon of water every so and so grocery trip and keeping them stored. I know that sounds paranoid af but i want to get ahead of worse situations (i.e weather emergencies, or things like what happened in Gary, IN).
Invest in a few food-grade containers meant specifically for water. Eventually those jugs will break; they're not meant to hold liquids indefinitely and the seals where they're molded together will eventually fail.
I did the same thing for years, then once when a snow storm hit, I went to grab some and half the jugs had failed and let the water run out- and some nasty bacteria and what have you- in.
Can't recall what they're named but there are some pretty affordable 5gal "bottles" that have carrying handles, a secondary valve for pouring evenly, and they can be stacked/lock into each other. We have about 20 of them and rotate the water out every other year, each with half a cap of bleach.
Good call/forward thinking though. There is a time coming where a lot of people will be exceedingly grateful for the rice and beans their crazy pepper family members have been hoarding. Maybe sooner than is the intention, the way the FDA has been cast aside and the entirety of our food chain has been completely compromised and now frozen blueberries can make you shit yourself to death like we're in covered wagons headed west. Ffs.
This is literally the speech that the bad guy in Mad Max: Fury Road made. Telling his slaves that water is 'addictive' so he can get away with rationing it.
I mean, if you’re draining that 40oz water bottle twice an hour every hour then yes, maybe stop drinking water before you die of water toxemia. If you’re sipping away throughout the afternoon and refilling once or twice a day, you just carry right on.
I’ve always drank at least half my body weight in oz per day. (I’m 180 lbs) so I drink around 100 oz a day on average and my pee is clear to light yellow on average. I’d say listen to your body.
Imagine living in the most technologically advanced era of human existence and people struggle and resources are limited ALL because rich motherfuckers don’t feel they’re rich enough.
Dawg, the kitchen I work in has not been below 95F in like three months. I’ve been refilling my 40oz Stanley cup probably 8 times a day and I don’t pee a single time throughout my 10 hour shift.
Water scarcity was already a problem (i.e. Colorado river, parts of Arizona, fracking contamination), and that's before the push for data centers which will consume lots of water.
Tbf, a lot of health and wellness trends as of late are being a bit over abused. Electrolytes and protein are being pushed heavily because of ozempic and glp-1 usage, and there is a such thing as being over hydrated relative to activity levels
Please note: hydration and supplement use relative to activity levels. There’s a difference between office workers and laborers in these regards
