They said my grandma has six weeks left to live. Please pray we get more time. She is 92 and has lived a good life but I want another year.

This is my annual reminder to all you first years to go to orientation events this week.

You don't want to show up to class on the first day and everyone else in your classes is already sitting in groups and saving seats for each other and you're stuck alone. Yes, playing 2 truths and a lie for an afternoon is cringy, but it's a way to get you chatting to people you don't know at all and probably won't afterwards if you don't now. It's much harder to do when they've already established friend groups and you're on the outside looking in. You don't want to finish first year having made no friends.

70% of the long time friends I made in university I probably made in the very first week of school playing some silly thing like the name game.

Also go to class. Sit in the front row. Be nodding at the professor when he/she makes eye contact with you whether you actually give a damn or not if everyone else is staring at screens probably online shopping, they will appreciate it and remember you. When you want to join their lab later in the year, or you need a reference for a co-op position, or it's a few days before your essay is due and you need that lil extension, they know your face and know who you are. I can't tell you how many classes I had where Professors were willing to cut me slack that they wouldn't others because they knew I was a student who showed up, tried and paid attention.

I'm not saying you need go to their office hours to pick their brain over theory, because that can be intimidating, but showing up, and looking/being interested is something very easy to do and can help you get into good books, and also help you stay more engaged and do better in classes.
