I went to a lesbian ren faire wedding and it was one of the most fun and loving festivity I've ever been to. And the dancing was so fun

They took us to one for our senior trip and the guys decided to pair up with the girls and treat us like princesses for the day, and we got to walk through trails in the woods smoking weed (circa 2002). Definitely 10/10 good times.

I was at the Maryland Ren Fest this past weekend, something I’ve done since I was a kid. I promise you it’s almost impossible to find a more diverse collection of humanity anywhere in America.

At said, there’s tons to do and see while there.
The things are expensive but it’s still a good time without any of it.Source: I grew up real poor by my friend’s mom was a vendor there so I would help out there but then just hang out. Tons of fun despite just lint in my pocket.

Forever ago I went to a ren fair with a friend of mine. He went to the bank and pulled out however much money it was in $1 coins to pay for things over the 3-4 days and he kept them in a coin purse attached to his belt. To simulate paying in gold coins. It was really interesting to see how all these $1 coins circulated and got dispersed throughout this tiny little economy. I was really young and this was before college so it was a neat little demonstration of how economics works.

If you’re interested in the physical activities, do them first thing when you get there (fencing, knife throwing, obstacles, etc.) you will get tired through the day and it does get hot so it’s best to knock it out while it’s still cool.
Afternoon is best for eating the food and catching the various shows.
The “pub crawl” or other liquor tours are in fact worth the money.
Edit: Forgot to mention this. Be prepared for weird and a lot of personal interaction with strangers. This is a place where people do alot of bits, jokes, and harmless pranks among strangers. Don’t be surprised if somebody you don’t know suddenly gets in your face with some silly shit. This is normal there. You might not like that sort of thing, it’s okay to politely decline, but recognize that the weird silly shit is a part of the experience so try not to also ruin it for them either.
Also some of the weird stranger interactions may be from the actual performers, comedians, and whatnot. The costumes are elaborate and sometimes it can be tough to tell whether the person who’s doing a bit with you works there, or is just some person that’s about to be your new best friend.
I would recommend embracing getting active and getting involved with the silly shit yourself but of course you’re comfort zone is your own.

Me and a buddy go every year and attempt to go to every alcohol vendor. We call it “around the world”. We only made it through one time and it took us all day because we didn’t want to get too trashed haha.

Some general advice from my personal (white, male, nerdy) perspective:
Research the Faire you’re going to- people will have tips about specific food, drinks, shops, parking, everything.
Set a budget for yourself- I personally like to browse through all the shops before I decide if I want to buy anything. But the selling point for a lot of RenFaire items is the experience. Also, save some money for food/drinks.
Participate- wear a costume (even just a hat), cheer for your favorite knight during a joust, heckle the villain in a play, joke with the shopkeepers.
One of my favorite RenFaire memories is a group of people who did basically the professional wrestling version of fighting with Mideival/Renaissance weapons. Two of the bigger guys were fighting each other with long swords while the rest of the group was trying to get the crowd to stop being polite and cheer for blood. One of the guys fighting slipped, and he bashed his knee on his opponents armor, cutting himself pretty badly. Without breaking, the guy who got cut yelled: “Did you not ask for blood?” They had fun even when they were hurt because they were participating. Later, they robbed a cart that was run by a group of people in fairy wings selling pickles. Embrace the weirdness, it makes things a ton of fun.
- (Optional) Learn some cool facts- A lot of people are just there for the entertainment aspects. That’s absolutely fine, but I’ve never been to a Faire that didn’t have at least 1 person who was doing a historical lesson on something (cooking, weapons/military tactics, traditional games, navigation, smithing, leatherwork, comedic insults).

When the gates open, go all the way to the back and work your way forward. You’ll have less time in crowds that way.
You will be extremely hot in a costume or layers so bring water and possibly a parasol.
Don’t be intimidated to get your first costume just right. People spend years adding to their costumes.
Where comfortable walking shoes, and bring a satchel for cool handmade stuff you’ll never see again on Amazon or Etsy.
Bring cash for games, and small bills to tip performers. There are a lot of outstanding comedy and circus shows.
Make conversation! People are super friendly and open. Don’t be afraid to ham up your character.

A friend of mine used to always try to get me to go to Ren Fair. I have always have an aversion to that location's period of history (for no logical reason at all LOL) and simply had/have no interest in going, but she LOVED it. This does look like fun though. Give me a danceable bop, and I'll try just about anything once. LOL

Worth it for the food and costumes for me. My fiancee convinced me to go to the NYRF last year and I had the same aversion. It was far less historical period and much more fantasy and inclusive. Would recommend the experience.

The Society for Creative Anachronism Has a chapter here. We used to go to a park and watch their sword practice. Only been to one, so fun. What adult doesn't want yo occassionally play dress up. And the clothes they had for sell. Have this fascination with history, if younger, I'd probably be a vendor at Ren Faire Think one is coming up soon in Chatlotte

This is so good. I'd love to see that they're moved to an official main stage or a pub venue act next time they pop up. Could easily fill a bawdy beer type show.
