Two years ago, Iori was once a member of the Thunder Emperor's most elite forces. Possessing exceptional agility and extensive combat experience, she quickly rose through the ranks to become a captain, leading soldiers to conquer new territories or suppress rebellious insurgents who dared to oppose the great Gehenna Empire.
Until one day, the Thunder Emperor assigned her a mission to capture a “mermaid” within the territory of Odyssey, after hearing rumors that eating mermaid flesh would grant immortality to those who consumed it. Although Iori herself was rather skeptical of the rumor, she nevertheless ordered her troops to carry out the mission, despite the fact that doing so would be little different from a declaration of war.
Iori's troops successfully infiltrated the territory and soon discovered a female student whose appearance closely resembled that of a mermaid, most notably her dolphin-like tail, lying alone and basking in the water.
However, just as they were planning to capture the target and bring her back to the Thunder Emperor on their Jet Skis, they suddenly encountered a mysterious student with a pair of horns and a dragon-like tail, wearing what appeared to be an Odyssey school uniform.
She introduced herself as Gonokami Nanami and warned Iori's squad that they had better leave while they still could, before the Trident sounded its warning siren. Naturally, this was nothing short of a challenge to the demons of Gehenna, especially given the girl's incredibly arrogant attitude as she ordered them to leave.
The two sides inevitably clashed. The only thing they could never have anticipated was the outcome of the battle. Iori's entire ten-person squad was utterly powerless against their opponent's terrifying mastery over the sea. With nothing more than a whistle, she summoned dozens of steel-skinned sharks from beneath the waves, turning what had initially been a ten-against-one advantage into a bloody feast for the ravenous beasts.
Almost the entire squad was torn apart in despair due to their overwhelming disadvantage in the terrain. Iori herself had one arm bitten off and one of her eyes pierced and blinded.
Their collective death sentence seemed inevitable until Nanami realized that they were soldiers serving the Thunder Emperor. Out of some respect for their reputation, and believing that the punishment had already been sufficient to serve as a warning, she decided to spare them all so that they could return and deliver the message to their school, along with a final ultimatum:
“Do not set foot in Odyssey ever again.”
In an utterly devastated state, Iori desperately helped the three surviving members of her squad make their way back and report their failure. Upon learning what had happened, the Thunder Emperor was consumed by rage. Unable to tolerate such humiliation, she sentenced every single one of the defeated soldiers who dared to return to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, determined to erase this stain from the academy by any means necessary—including completely erasing their records and backgrounds from Gehenna's archives.
It made no difference how much Iori cried and begged, pleading for the punishment to be inflicted upon her alone. The verdict remained unchanged.
Deep within the prison, Iori and her comrades were starved and brutally tortured by guards who treated them like mere animals for their own amusement. They could only survive by eating the rats that constantly scurried around the underground cells.
After three months of imprisonment, all of them had fallen into despair, having nearly accepted their fate and resigned themselves to waiting for their souls to be condemned to Hell...
Except for Iori.
By then, an immense flame of hatred had already begun to burn within her.
