Iām kind of surprised they didnāt balk at copyright infringement issues, but nice that they overlooked it so you can have your books looking like new.
Doesnāt change the copyright law. They really canāt print those images without permission. It hurts no one and copyright laws can be ridiculous. They did you a solid.
Itās been a while since Iāve been in the printing business. People cared twenty years ago, maybe things have gotten a lot more looseā¦ but I donāt think the laws have changed.
The cover is magnificent! It makes me want to print some of my own!! They look totally professional.

They definitely did me a solid. Iāve been a client of this particular print shop for about 13 years and they recognized this as a pet project and gifted me a stack with different paper stock samples they did for it. I totally understand what you mean, and I wouldnāt set up an online shop selling another designerās work. I might however do a few variants using new designs of my own. The red Shogun was something I was fooling around with, and I think a two volume set like that with a different katana blade and typefaces might be sweet.
But yeah, Iām not arguing with you! I appreciate your feedback š
Iām a graphic designer. I do a mix of print and web materials, and Iāve worked with so many offset and digital print shops over the years that I hold those people in high esteem for helping make my work look great coming off the press!
Copywrites on dust jackets are a little tricky because they aren't considered a permanent part of the book, so a copywrite notice on the book has generally been found not to apply to the cover. Newer covers often have their own notices but I doubt that's the case for The Stand.
Even if you reproduce the original cover artwork exactly, personal use of a single replacement cover is very different from distributing or selling copies of it. I would say this is Pretty legal. Maybe like very very very light gray area. š¤·āāļø

What do you mean by "your printer" ? Is this something which could be imitated by someone who hasn't he own printer, but just uses printing services available to anyone ?
You can find junk books with the correct dimensions and cover them in classic dust jackets from highly collectable books and nobody would be the wiser! Just find a cooperating printer, like you did!
Because producing one-offs/low quantities at a printer isn't that cheap. And a lot of work goes into reproducing the design and sourcing the high res images.
I was tempted to try this for fun for some old hardbacks I have. Can you describe the steps/software/approach you used? Do you have high res scans of the jacket or are you recreating them somehow?
Iāve replied elsewhere in this thread, but yeahā¦ I touched up the cover art from an image I found with Google, and redid all the type with Adobe Illustrator. Retyping all the copy, measuring the dimensions and matching the typefaces took the longest.
Local print shop helped me out. They used an 80# silk cover weight that I really like. The Shogun covers are lighter weight but I have some more on the heavyweight.
