Traveling to Boston for my first time with my 84 y/o dad in October. For his age, he's still very spry, walks a couple miles a day, is currently on vacation with my mom in the English countryside. He had a health scare back in February, doing great now, but after that I decided I'd like to take him on a trip while I still can, and he chose Boston.

I was thinking of staying in the Back Bay area. Google said this is a great walkable area. Is this a good call? Or are there other neighborhoods I should consider?

I'm hoping to avoid renting a car and instead mostly walk on the trip (or using an uber whenever necessary). How is the public transport in Boston? Should I reconsider and rent a car? Would the Back Bay neighborhood be a good spot to stay if I want to avoid renting a car?

Any must see sites/activities I should consider? I'll admit I know very little about Boston. My dad is very big into history and loves a good museum (particularly historical). When I asked him what things he might want to do, the only thing he said he knew of or was interested in was the "Freedom Trail." Looking for other suggestions.
