A child was struck by a car passing a stopped school bus on University Dr. fifteen minutes ago. I work at a business on this street and a man ran in asking if we had seen anything. He was driving by, saw the accident and pulled over. Do not pass a stopped school bus. Wherever you're going is not that important.

Seriously!? What is going through your mind, thinking this is a good idea?

Building two restaurants at once aims to strike a balance in Durham’s foodie scene, the couple said, that could withstand the whims of taste and economic trends. Cornelia’s tasting menus will be between $115 and $180, while The Vintner and The Baker will serve coffee and baked goods during the day and glasses of wine and small plates at night.

This building did a great job during its renovation to keep the original character. It felt unfortunate seeing it sit vacant every time I passed it riding my bike. I'm sure the tasting menu prices are going to make people angry, but very exciting there's also a bakery for moroe every day needs

After making an appointment in MyChart, I noticed a letter indicating I was eligible for 100% financial assistance, based on an income level that was less than 1/3 of my actual income. It also gave me an extra household member. When I called Customer Service, the woman (who was very nice) informed me that. I would need to apply for financial assistance so they could review my case and tell me I’m not eligible for financial assistance, including sending copies of my pay stub.

I am sorely tempted to ignore the form, since I shouldn’t be required to send them my personal employment and financial information. After all, I never applied for financial assistance. The problem appears to be with their third party vendor, which, according to Customer Service, is Experian.

Has anyone else run into problems with the financial assistance program at Duke Health?

I saw an opportunity this week and made the most of it.

In short:

We believe Amazon found a way to charge a few extra pennies to an enormous number of transactions, adding up to over $20 billion in
illegal charges.

This is about how something becomes a "Sponsored product."

Amazon lets businesses bid to be "Sponsored" and it runs digital auctions to collect the bids.

But Amazon told businesses that the highest bid would only pay slightly more than the second-highest bid.

For example: If you bid $1 to have your product “Sponsored” and the next-highest bid is $0.50, you should pay about $0.51.

But we believe that Amazon would run the auction, see those bids, and then secretly raise the second-place price so it could charge the
winner more.

It was a gradual strategy based on concealment.

Internal Amazon documents show they tested how much they could raise those hidden charges without advertisers catching on, then raised them
more when businesses didn’t react, then gave false answers when businesses started asking questions.

Those higher costs on sellers can filter down to you, as consumers, through higher prices, and our initial estimate is that this impacted thousands of small businesses in North Carolina.

This is a bipartisan case, and I appreciate my fellow AGs in both parties joining. More to follow.

“Durham Public Schools told CBS 17 that the new campus is about 60% finished. While leaders once expected the building to open in 2027, it’s now expected to open for students in the fall of 2028.”

We are looking for help persuading our somewhat elderly dog (50 lbs, 14ish years old) to tolerate being placed in the Bailey chair. We'd really appreciate any advice or recommendations for dog trainers who might be able to help.

(For those who have not had to deal with a dog suffering from esophageal problems, a Bailey chair is a feeding chair that will hold a dog comfortably upright during and for a half-hour or so after eating).

Do we have one and I’m missing it? Everyone I see around here closes so damn early. I used to love going to get night coffee. It was a great to meet up, listen to an acoustic artist, drink coffee and write.

there's already a thread on parking shenanigans going on at Liberty Warehouse, opening separate post to ask for any NC attorney recommendations.

Landlord has implemented new policies which add a ton of costs and charges for visitor parking but no language in lease to provide for this so it appears these policies may not be enforceable.

I'm willing to invest some money to push back but struggling to find an attorney willing to take this on. This is not a large piece of work – it’s not a six or seven figure piece of litigation and not a multimillion dollar settlement on a contingency fee. Instead, it’s probably a few billable hours (at least at the outset) to review materials and draft a letter. If the adverse party is unresponsive, then I’ll have to consider litigating it.

Appreciate any lawyer recommendations folks may have, thx.

I live in Durham and have found that the normal concert discovery tools don't work well here. Bandsintown, Songkick, Spotify concerts, etc. are all great at telling you when an artist you love is playing in Durham, but that might only happens a few times a year here. I found myself wanting the opposite: who's playing in Durham this week that I might like?

I built a little app to solve this problem for myself: weeknight.fm. It pulls my listening history from Last.fm, builds a taste profile, and picks the handful of shows over the next two weeks it thinks I'd like. These mostly aren't bands I've heard before, so the app also writes a short editorial for each show that contextualizes it against my own listening. It also deliberately tries to challenge me a little with its picks.

I now use this weekly and was curious if it might appeal to anyone else. I'm looking for ten or so active Last.fm users who'd like to go to more shows. It's free and I'll cover all the costs during the beta. The one thing I'll ask in return is a couple of minutes of feedback each week for about six weeks, mostly whether anything on the list made you seriously consider or actually go to a show you'd otherwise have missed. That's the most important question I'm trying to answer.

P.S. Just to answer maybe the two most obvious questions:

1. Why Last.fm and not Spotify? Spotify support is actually already built, but Spotify locked their API down a couple of years ago such that you can't offer an app to the general public without meeting some pretty steep requirements. I've tested with a few family members via Spotify but can't offer it more broadly right now, unfortunately.
2. Can you add (insert venue)? Right now it covers Motorco, the Pinhook, the Fruit, Cat's Cradle in Carrboro, and whatever Ticketmaster lists for Durham, so it's pretty Durham-focused. If you live in Raleigh/Cary/CH you'll still get a list of shows, but they'll be sourced from those venues. I'd be glad to add many more venues if this turns out to be useful to others.

TW: Deceased kitty

Hey y'all, we found a deceased small black and white kitty this morning in Walltown near Club and Berkeley. We could not take a photo in their condition, it would be a very upsetting one. This little buddy was thin, maybe 6-7 lbs, mostly white body with large patches of black, and a mostly black face. They had no collar, and we took them to our vet and they did not have a chip, so it is very possible they were a stray.

If this is your baby, I am so sorry and wish we had more info for you. We are having the little guy cremated and would love to be able to return the ashes if an owner is found. If not, we will lay them to rest with all our other little guys ashes.

Side note: Serenity Pets cremation service is so wonderful, they always get us in quickly, and Dave is such a nice and compassionate guy. It's always sad when we need their services, but they make a hard time easier.
