I’ve been using Cronometer to track my nutrition for years. I’ve tried all the leading apps over the last decade and it’s been my favourite one by far.

The app has a logical design that’s fast and easy to use, the food database is large and well-maintained, new foods are easy to add, and actual humans respond to emails quickly when you find a food that needs to be updated or corrected. (Bonus: The humans are helpful and friendly!)

I had always assumed that it was an American app and I was feeling a bit guilty about continuing to use it. But I found out today that they’re based out of Revelstoke, BC! You can read more about the company here: https://cronometer.com/about/

Yes the production is mostly made in China because we do not have the manufacturing industry here in Canada but all designs, marketing, testings etc is made in Longueil, Quebec. They pick and visit their partners in china very well.

They own many patent for theirs kitchen tools, they also do the Ricardo kitchen stuff.

Such a great underrated company. I worked for them for a couple of years and it amaze me how many people didn’t know it’s Canadian.

I thought it might be helpful to post creative ways to support Canada that are not financial. Times are tough these days and I know everyone here wants to support Canadian business but might not always have the means to do so. Below are a few that come to mind for me but I'm looking forward to see what others do!

1. Support Canadian Creators Online

2. VOTE for local, provincial and federal candidates that you believe best support Canadian values.

3. Share Canadian business on social media

4. Protest - exercise your rights for causes you believe in.

5. Volunteer in your community

I emailed Unilever to get some clarification on their country of origin labelling. Here is their response:

All labels accurately reflect where our products are made. Products made in Canada will list Unilever Canada on the back. Products made outside of Canada will note that they are “Imported By Unilever Canada” or list the country where they are made.

I've made the switch to Attitude, but in a pinch, it's good to know what I can get at the grocery store or pharmacy.

It's ridiculous that almost two years later, we have to email companies for clarification. We still can't get our government to act on implementing mandatory country of origin labelling laws (like our Aussie cousins). My MP is conservative, so I don't expect her to support anything like this. Are there any MPs willing to champion this?

I've created a shared spreadsheet with a focus on Canadian-owned and Canadian-made outdoor gear makers and stores. So much of the outdoor gear market in Canada is dominated by American brands that it can be hard to sort through it all. Maybe we can crowdsource a list for gear shoppers to make things a little easier and showcase what Canada has to offer.

Anyone can contribute, all contributions are anonymous. Canada is the highlight, but there are options for links to makers from other regions as well. The most important part of this sheet is that it brings the receipts: a "Reference of Origin" field requires contributors to submit a link that indicates the location of a company's headquarters or proves that it's majority Canadian-owned. Many big companies can be headquartered locally but be controlled by foreign corporations; others are branded "Canadian" while ownership is in a different country.

This is an experiment, let's see how it works.

Just replaced Google search engine with Mojeek. Not Canadian but not American. Its from the UK. Quick test it appears to work fine and doesn't data mine like Google.

Very pleased to have ordered a replacement microwave glass plate from Danby, for a Hamilton Beach microwave I purchased from Walmart several years ago. I was successfully able to avoid Walmart and Amazon for that.

Help! Does anyone have any (ideally) Canadian or (at minimum) non-US yarn brand recs that make natural fibre yarns and retailers that carry them?

Having a hell of a time finding affordable cotton/rayon/linen/wool/bamboo/hemp/anything not plastic yarn from brick and mortar places or easily shippable stores. I’ve looked on the subreddit and other places, but lots of stuff that’s recommended is way out of price range or I can’t find online for love nor money.

I don’t care if it’s mid quality, but I’m trying to de-plastic my life and the only options that I can reliably find are Evil Micheal’s Loops and Threads or Equally Evil Sugar N Cream. I’m caught between my US-related disdain and an equal hatred for acrylic/polyester.

I’m looking to re-do my deck with composite as our current wooden deck is starting to rot and composite would require less maintenance. The contractors I’ve talked to all recommend US companies such as Trex or TimberTech. When I ask them for “made in Canada” alternatives most of them seem surprised and claim there are no quality alternatives. One of the contractors suggested TruNorth only to retract it a day later saying quality is poor and customer service is subpar and redirected me towards US made options.

Does this subreddit have recommendations or positive experiences with made in Canada composites worth sharing?

With such a strong outdoor patio and cottage culture I’m surprised we don’t have a developed domestic composites industry.

I was on the hunt for a decent popcorn that was lighter and not loaded with oil like most store bought ones are. I happened across this brand, Imperial Popcorn.

I had never noticed them in the stores around me before, but they have been around for 25 years and are based out of Quebec.

They have a lot of flavours (cinema, dill pickle, cheddar, salt and vinegar, ketchup and more). All flavours are dairy free (vegan) which for me is important too!

So far I’ve tried cinema, cheddar, and ketchup and honestly all have been delicious.

I’ve found the near me (in Ontario) at Walmart (cinema only) and Giant Tiger (multiple flavours).

The bags are HUGE.

Hi, I’m looking for a Canadian alternative to Cintas. I’m based in Toronto and the business we have uses around 10 mats and two hand sanitizer dispensers changed weekly. Mainly I just need the mats.

Not a deal breaker, but ideally the company can do annual contracts or no contract / month to month. Cintas is really pushy about getting you into long contracts and there’s no real benefit to it other than (maybe) about a 2% discount.

Haven't seen this posted here yet but I need a new perfume! I tend to gravitate towards unisex scents (nothing too sweet or floral) and am looking for something somewhat reasonably priced (<$200 full size), and preferably none of this all-natural essential oil business (sorry!).

Went to Costco today and found the leanfit protein powder I used to buy spiked from $49.99 for 2kg to $80??! Looking for an alternative that I can actually afford. Apparently whey price is increasing across the board.

As far as I know acrylic is not manufactured in Canada, it's imported.

I’m looking for an energy drink that tastes as good as Alani but is Canadian. I bought Guru from Costco and we are choking them down. Zoa is bottled in Canada so it’s a decent alternative, but I’m hoping there is something closer to the flavours of Alani. Anybody have any ideas?

I’ve been looking for a good Greek dressing for a long time. I picked up Le Grec at the grocery store to try it out and loved it! Looked at the bottle and it’s made in Canada from domestic and imported ingredients. Figured they were importing the olives and olive oil but wanted to make sure nothing was coming from the states. I emailed them and they responded quickly with an answer.
None of their ingredients come from the States and it’s owned by a Canadian woman. I’ll be buying this stuff from now on.

Edit: I honestly don’t think I could make it taste as good as the company does.
This is a buy Canadian subreddit so I’m pointing people in the direction of a Canadian product. I COULD make it myself but that would be another dish.

We are currently going through a home insurance claim which will result in the changing of carpet(flooring), and while dealing with that we are also looking at options that we could do on our own to better make our closet functional… we honestly don’t know where to look for somewhat reasonable financial options or what could be possible! Help please:)) (also the dresser doesn’t need to be in there AT ALL, I’m just a lil weak and it’s hard for me to drag it out😅😂… I’m planning on selling that one and the other identical one I have.. so pretend like it’s not there lol)…
