Personal Story Dumb ass design

Post image

So this is just me ranting for a sec. I've had this thing almost 9 years and I've missed maybe 4 nights with it. It's been such an amazing addition to my quality of life. Yet, every night when I fill up the reservoir I'm like a dumbass drunk trying to balance the container so it doesn't tip back and the lid closes while I'm filling it with water and while you're focusing on balancing it you gotta watch the water level cause it's not even with the rim and will spill before it's full. Ugh

What dumbass designer did this. My 12 yr old can point out the design flaws in this.

K. I'm. Going to bed. Damn this machine, I literally can't live without it but it's such a dumbass little annoyance to deal with every damn night. Ugh

Personal Story 2 days on CPAP - before and after analytics on Oura Ring (Life changing)

Long story short. I (F31) got my machine 2 days ago. I feel like a new person. I went for 2 long walks both days. Something I usually do not have the energy for at all.

I didn’t doze off driving my son to daycare.

I can see my life changing already and I look forward to the new me. I’m so grateful for this technology.

If you’re unsure if you have apnea or not, get checked asap. If the machine is too expensive for you, prioritize it, save for it, finance it. Anything. You need it. Your life will change. I regret putting this off for so long.

I am a 31 year old mom.

My AHI was 87.5

Advice Needed Struggle with acceptance

Post image
110 Upvotes

I am just wondering how CPAP users deal and psychologically with long term mask use every night? I feel like a prisoner tethered to my bed unable to speak. I know the CPAP is helping me and prolonging my life, but struggle with leaks, ripping off the mask, and feeling like a hostage.

I'm a mouth breather and tried but failed using a nasal pillow mask several times. I kept opening my mouth and gushing air and waking up at night. Mouth tape was even harder to tolerate to train myself to keep my mouth closed. A collar and chin strap also feel even more restrictive. I've read that mouth breathing can, or maybe has already led to a host of health issues and how nasal breathing is much healthier.

So, I now switch between full face masks - an F&P Vitera and a more restrictive Löwenstein Lena, which has the lowest leaks and best results. I've also always used a sleep mask and can't sleep without it.

I'm grateful for the good nights , but still struggle now a year into CPAP therapy. It's more mental and psychological I believe. I don't mind the criticism, I think there is something to accepting that this is what I need and building the resilience I'm lacking.

I'm not sure about alternatives. They seem to have mixed results and my sleep doctor has told me CPAP remains the gold standard.

Thanks for any suggestions and feedback.

Advice Needed Apria is awful

Hi, I'm just over 6 months in and find my CPAP supplier, Apria, a real pain to deal with. One has to repeat everything 2-3 times before an order is made and approvals take forever. Also, they're always trying to upsell when I make an order. I understand that the agents who do that are probably under orders to do so, but I've just about had it.

My insurance covers my materials. What suppliers do you recommend; I'm on the West Coast, USA.

F&P Nova Micro: anyone else feeling the pillows "stabbing" their nostrils?

Upvotes

Normally a P10 user. It's a good mask but it's cumbersome, the pillow is huge and juts out quite a bit which for a side sleeper like me is untenable. I tried the P30i for a couple of weeks but it just doesn't work for me: every time I'm on my side the frame on the side pushes the pillows out of alignment and causes leaks.

So I was really stoked to try out the Nova Micro. It's super lightweight and low profile so would be great for a side sleeper. But, its pillows are SPIKEY. I can't seem to get them to seat without it feeling like I'm being stabbed in my septum and toward the lower side of my nostrils (upper lip direction). I have the fit pack and I've tried all three sizes. I'm likely a large since that's what I also use on the P10 and the P30i. But try as I might the Nova Micro pillows are incredibly painful. They do seem to be cantered inward significantly; could it be they are designed for a slimmer, Caucasian noses? I have a pretty wide nose so wondering if that's the issue here. I am a bit bummed out because I was so excited to try the Nova Micro out.

ETA: It was so bad that after a 30 minute session with the Nova Micro even the P10 pillows hurt/cause discomfort; and they never really hurt me before.

Advice Needed Fixing rainout

Upvotes

So I’ve been playing around with the humidity and tube temp settings and nothing has been working for the water pooling in my mask.

I sleep in a cold room (66-68 degrees F) and have tried setting the humidity low and tube temp high, low humidity and medium tube temp. I heard lowering the machine can help but I have nothing lower to put it on and if I put it on the floor, the tube isn’t long enough because I have a higher bed frame.

I end up only getting about 5 hours out of my CPAP before having to take it off bc of the amount of water pooling in my mask.

Any advice?

Advice Needed Solutions to aerophagia?

Upvotes

Been very frustrated because air pressure seems right, I have a con strap to keep my mouth closed while I sleep. In using a nose cover mask (not nasal pillows or full mask) and yet, I wake up because I need to burp. The machine simply isn't working for me. What can I do?

Discussion Rubbing mustasch off?

I just got a CPAP with the AirFit F40 mask, and I've used it two nights so far, but have taken it off in my sleep after 3-4 h each night.

Anyways, when I looked in the mirror this morning, the sides of my mustasch is almost gone!😭 So I'm curious, have this happened to any of you?

PS, I don't have it tight, if I losen it more, it will leak.

Switching masks a year in?

First time, long time!

I’ve been on CPAP treatment for about a year now and the first month was incredible- I felt so much more energy, was waking up early with no issues, I could really feel it working. After that, it pretty much feels the same as usual- still sleep shitty some nights, wake up tired as hell and struggle to get out of bed. I’ve run my data through OSCAR and everything shows up pretty normal and solid. I’ve even upped my min pressure to 9 which I think maybe helped a bit, but am wondering if maybe it’s worth trying a new mask?

I’m a side sleeper and back sleeper, but worry that when I’m on my side and face is pressed against the pillow, it feels like maybe it leaks sometimes? The wind from the mask blowing at my girlfriend’s face also drives her nuts haha so a mask (maybe unicorn style?) could also help with that issue.

Is it crazy to try out one or more mask types after a year into treatment? Just want to make sure I’m not running a big risk of making the treatment ineffective or whatever if what I’m doing now is technically working.

Thanks!

New and struggling

Hi! I am about a month into cpap use and feeling so much worse than I was before. I am exhausted and now the thought of going to sleep fills me with dread. Thus far I have tried the n30i (I tear it off without fail within about an hour of sleep) and the f30i (even worse—I’m waking up constantly)
My sleep coach told me I am on my third and final mask, and I have no idea what to do. My instinct is to try a traditional full face mask like an f20 but the sleep coach seemed to be steering me away. I am on the verge of giving up and could really use some advice.

Advice Needed UK CPAP users, have you changed your NHS issued machine setting?

Hi all

I'm just learning about OSCAR and how it can be used to help dial in settings and improve your AHI. Has anybody used OSCAR to do this and changed the settings on a machine issued to them by the NHS?

I'm curious if they will say anything or tell me not to do it if I change these myself. I've just been moved to the patient initiated scheme so they have said they are happy with my usage as I average 6+ hours and happy with the progress with the machine and are basically going to leave me alone unless I ask for support.

My AHI on average sits around 2 with the machine down from 10.8 which I got on my first sleep study but I want to try and get this number lower and my machine is currently set between the range of 4 - 20.

Any help or advice would be appreciated!

Advice Needed Is it normal to feel like you CANT breathe at first?

When I’m dozing off and half-awake, half-asleep I sometimes feel the need to jolt awake or rip the mask off because I feel like it’s making it harder to breathe. Is this normal and part of getting used to the mask, or is something wrong? Man, I’m so tired….

Advice Needed 3 weeks into CPAP. Felt overwhelmed. Plan to take a night off without CPAP

It's been 3 weeks in, while I'm slowly getting used to the machine, but today I'm feeling overwhelmed and sensory overloading putting it on.. I'm planning to take tonight off and sleep without it. Did you guys do this too? Like, take a break from the machine once a while? Will it do much harm if I just take one night off?

Help with DreamWisp Fitting gauge?

Hello everybody,

I was given a Philips DreamWisp, but it seems like the fitting gauge was not included. I must be either an "M" or an "L".

Could anybody else with a DreamWisp measure the drawn lines (red/teal) and tell me the lengths? I'd like to know where I fall according to the "official" fitting gauge.

Thank you so much.

Advice Needed P10 nasal cushion replacements on NHS

Hi,

I've been using the P10 mask for just over 2 months now and recently have had the feeling the nasal cushions aren't sitting perfectly flush with my nostrils anymore.

After doing a quick bit of reading, ResMed recommend replacing them every month and most people on Reddit I've seen say somewhere between 2 weeks and 3 months.

I contacted my local NHS sleep clinic that I'm under the care of, requesting new cushions and asking their recommendation of how often to replace them. They have refused to give me new ones and have said they strictly replace them once a year.

I've told them that doesn't align with anything I've read but they are not willing to listen.

I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this and if so what should be done? I can't afford to replace them monthly and I don't think I should be expected to considering I'm under the care of the NHS

myAir/OSCAR/SleepHQ Data Wake Sleep Transition - CSR - and CAs at bottom pressure (4 with EPR1)

Last nights sleep session. Second picture is the first 45 minutes from the start of laying down to sleep.....CSR, 30 CAs, 2 RERAs, and 1 OA. Did not feel this in any way. Only realized it when uploading to OSCAR this moring. Wake Sleep Junk? True CAs nontheless? Or not? Nine CAs at lowest pressure before a RERA caused the pressure to begin to rise. Time to look into ASV or BiPAP ST? Comments, suggestions or advice welcome.

Advice Needed Is it dangerous to hold off getting replacement masks?

So I use the mask that goes from the lower lip up to the bottom of your nose (with two slots for nostrils). I had great insurance for a while so I was getting new supplies. However, since I switched insurance at the beginning of the year it’s not so great. I haven’t changed the mask or tube since.

I rarely use water in the thing, never bothered me so I rarely think to fill it up. About once a week I clean the tube with apple cider vinegar and use dish soap on the face mask. It’s a little more malleable than it was new but seems to be fine. The tube is somewhat transparent and I don’t see any splotches of mold in there.

I’m just wondering if I am harming my health by inhaling microplastics from the rubber breaking down or something.

Advice Needed Can I Buy A CPAP Without Prescription

I been diagnosed with OSA before. Last time I met with the pulmonologists. He wanted me to used the CPAP that I already have. So he could request a prescription for a new machine. I work overnights and won't bring my machine to work, though we sleep at work. Then when I get back home from work, I haven't been consistent using my machine.

I would like to get a new CPAP, and especially a travel size one. I wonder if I could get one without a prescription.

Advice Needed Mood issues after starting

42m I’ve recently started treating my sleep apnea last 5 weeks properly with CPAP and my sleep is becoming much more consolidated. My AHI on treatment is very low and some nights I’m clearly sleeping better than I have in a long time. Longer more consolidated going from 3-5hrs of fragmented crap sleep waking up 3-4 times for 20hrs to 6-7hrs barely waking.

The weird thing is my mood has been all over the place. I’ve had periods of feeling anxious, depressed, irritable and completely exhausted/flat, and today after a better night’s sleep I actually feel noticeably better but keep randomly crying and feel unusually emotional. I also had extremely vivid/hectic dreams last night.

I’m not assuming CPAP is causing it — there are other variables in my case — but I’m wondering whether anyone experienced a strange emotional adjustment period when they first started consistently treating their OSA or when their sleep finally improved. Did you have increased emotionality, crying, anxiety, low mood, vivid dreams or mood fluctuations during the first few weeks/months? If so, did it eventually settle, and roughly how long did that take?

Particularly interested in experiences from people who had years of fragmented sleep before starting CPAP.

Thanks just a bit all over the place ATM and trying to workout whats going on.
