I am *hopefully* in my last semester of community college. I am working right now on my sleep and on calming my mind/on my anxiety. I am realizing that I do have bad anxiety. I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety in high school. I can still function and do what I need to do, but I think that this has kept me from pursuing something more “challenging” in terms of a major so far. A few years ago I thought that I wanted to go in for psychology, but like a lot of things in life I am honestly not sure. I just know that I ultimately want to do better than my parents did.
I know that I want to make good money. I am uncertain about a masters degree because it would of course require me to take out a lot of money (I have $37k or so saved right now, but I of course won’t have a masters degree for years.) I don’t recall my community college GPA off the top of my head, but I have had to complete the gen Ed’s of course to transfer and am what will hopefully be my last semester as a child development major (I am taking multiple units, so I will see what happens.) I am actually not so sure that I see myself working with children in the longrun, however. I know that my overall goal is to help people. I want to find and do something wherein I can provide community members with support, but my issue is also that even though I know that I can handle a stressful job (I have experience as a behavior technician and with people who some have a harder time supporting,) I also recognize that it would likely be healthier for me to do something that gives me a breather period and some more time to relax. I am not from a privileged background and I know that I want to make enough in the long term to get to a place in life wherein I am truly just more comfortable.
I already know that I do not want to become a preschool teacher. Part of my problem in general is that I can have a lot of doubt about things. My community college GPA is more than a 3.8. I actually may be interested in teaching in some capacity - I have always enjoyed working with kindergartners-second graders who I have babysat on reading based activities, and have considered perhaps trying to become a reading intervention specialist. I must emphasize that I really value communication. This is something that I have started to value more over time. I think that many people lack effective communication skills. I do like to seek feedback when I am working under someone and will gladly shift if feedback is communicated to me like an adult. I am displeased about passive aggressive behavior and don’t like it when people don’t talk issues through first.
