Orchard Media has gone out of business

Not sure if anyone knows about them, but worth mentioning if you did. They're a relatively big business in Cardiff, and today announced its closure based on "the challenges of a reducing market and increased competition."

Jobs for students

Upvotes

I'm a student and need a job within a month of returning to Cardiff (october). What is the best way to go about this? I've never had a job and I probably sound stupid but I'm from a small town where there was maybe 2 places that hired teens so no one had a job or heard back at all. I have no choice. I need a job hopefully within 2 weeks.

Floppy disc retrieval in Cardiff?

Having tried an external disc reader with no joy, I have five floppy discs which I would like to retrieve the data from. Any recommendations for a company who would do this, ideally in central Cardiff?

ETA - thank you for all the super helpful suggestions. Unfortunately I am too much of a luddite to attempt almost all of it but will do my best!

Laptop Repair

Does anyone have any recommendations for laptop repair places in Cardiff/Newport? Had a look via Google and most places in the top results seem to be rated quite highly and nothing really distinguishes what's "best" for my issues i.e. Asus ScreenPad not working, laptop only turns on when plugged in/powers off immediately when not plugged in. Any help appreciated

Is this normal behaviour from bus drivers in Cardiff?

Hi everyone, I am a 17-year-old college student who has just moved to Cardiff, and I am not quite familiar with the bus routes and stops that get me to college yet.

Today, I took a adventure travel bus to college to attend a meeting. When I got on the bus, I told the bus driver that I wanted a ticket from town to the library. However, I didn’t realise that we had already arrived at my stop, so I accidentally got off at the next stop instead.

After I walked off the bus, the driver pointed his finger at me and told me to stop moving. He used some rude language towards me, called me an idiot, and told me that I should buy the right ticket on his bus. However, it was an honest mistake, as I am not from the city and I am still unfamiliar with the stops.

I understand that I got off at the wrong stop, but would getting off one stop really make that big of a difference? I genuinely did not realise that we had arrived, and I wasn’t trying to do anything wrong.

I am also a Chinese girl, and I felt quite awkward and unwelcome in Cardiff afterwards because of this experience. There were so many people on the bus that morning, yet he only chose to pay attention to me and my stop, which made the whole situation feel even more uncomfortable.

I know that I made an honest mistake, but I don’t think I deserved to be spoken to like that over something so minor, especially when I am new to the city and still trying to familiarise myself with the bus routes.

Anyone who lived in the 80s, specifically the mid 80s, that can help me with smth?!

So, currently, I'm interested in what the 80s were like in Cardiff. I'm mostly interested in like teenage life, but mostly how high school was, and mostly infrastructure, like what were the streetlights like, what songs people listened to, stuff like that. I know the topics I'm asking about are kind of specific, but I'm curious about what it's like, my dad grew up in the 80s/90s here, so I'll ask him about stuff too if he remembers anymore, I know the 80s were like 40 years ago, but I'm just wondering if anyone remembers anything related to the topics, it would really help me, thanks! :D
Have a great day!

First time in Cardiff

Hello everyone! I’m travelling from Guildford to Cardiff for a day. I’m sure there are lots of things to see and do, but what would you say are the must-see or must-do things in Cardiff?
Also, I’d love some recommendations for the best coffee spots in the city. ☕️
Thank you so much for your suggestions! 😊

Having a tough time making friends

Don’t mean to sound like that guy, it’s just been hard adjusting to a new city for just over 2 years. With most of my friends now at least an hour away. I’ve had uni during this time then a temporary job until I’ve finally found an opening for what I wanna do and got it which is great. But yeah would be great to make some new friends, I’m a 26 year old guy.

Somethings I like:

Exercise: Big into weight training (been going 5–6 days a week for just over 4 years) and I play Right Back for my team⚽️.

Books/pods: I often listen to history pod or audiobooks, but do tend to read Greek mythology, some autobiographies, and fantasy books.

Nights out: I do enjoy a chilled time in a beer garden or a proper night out on the town.

Feel free to say hi :)

Exercise/gym body doubling

Hi there,

I'm looking for body doubles (essentially accountable fitness partners) in Cardiff. Essentially it's a tool used by neurodivergent folk to encourage us to keep to our timings and plans.

You don't have to train and do the same workout as such, it's more a way of meeting at the same point and work in parallel by turning up together, checking in, checking on drinking water or how we are feeling and even leaving at different times.

I would be up for joining any gym within reason.

I would be able to meet Mon-Fri for 30 minutes between 11.45-1.45, Weds, Thu, Fri evenings, Thu, Fri mornings.

I'm a 40 yo NB/W, LGBTQ, relatively fit but needing to get back on it after a stressful year.

DM if you're interested.

Racket sports buddies in Cardiff

Hi there

I am looking for racket sport buddies especially in Llanishen and surrounding area for myself and my son to buddy up.

We love pickleball, play ping pong, and it's fair to say we would be up for racketball/squash, badminton etc.

My schedule is a little nuanced.

I could play any time at the weekend with no commitments, though 1 week in 4 I don't have my son.

In the week we could do after school on Mondays and Tuesdays.

I'm a 40 year old F/NB, decent at most sports, though not feeling my fittest rn, civil servant, neurospicy. Son is also neurospicy flavoured and 8 years old, very tall for his age and very hyperverbal and friendly.

Where to go with a toddler and baby on a rainy day?

Crucially, our toddler can’t walk so it needs to be somewhere accessible for a double buggy. We’ve done Techniquest and the museum recently, what other recommendations do people have?

Not against driving outside Cardiff to find other attractions. We’ve lived here for 10 years before being parents so chances are we’ll have heard of most suggestions but we’re just drawing blanks so need reminding of options if anything!
