Hey there! I wanted to update everyone on the jig/scribe that I was working on yesterday into today. I think it turned out great!

I’ve also added a few pictures of setting the main tree earlier this summer as well as a few other trees we set in the same area. We worked with WholeTree to supply the my trees and our company performed the install.

This is an elementary school so I’m sure the kiddos are going to love the space.

Im so tired of getting prints calling for 250lb solid core hidden doors on a standard 2x4 interior wall. like... guys, lumber is barely straight these days anyway. you cant just slap drywall over bowing pine studs and expect a massive trimless door to sit perfectly flush without twisting the whole frame

Luckily the GC actually got the budget approved for a proper concealed pivot setup from abesco this time, so the hardware could actually carry the load without dropping a quarter inch after two days

but honestly routing out deep mortises in the field while the homeowner hovers over my shoulder acting shocked that sawdust exists is draining my soul. Im just so over this whole minimalist "invisible door" trend tbh. give me normal casing to hide the framing gaps any day of the week.

I’m looking for some advice on the best way to insulate and drywall a cathedral/vaulted ceiling in our house.

The ceiling gets very hot, so I’d like to add insulation and then install drywall underneath. The house was built in the 1960s in Hawaii, and the existing construction is a little different from a typical newer house.

Here are the measurements:

- Existing ceiling beams/rafters: 5-3/16" thick

- Inside spacing between beams: approx 46-3/8"

- It’s a vaulted/cathedral ceiling with the existing beams exposed on the interior.

- There isn't a conventional framed attic space above it.

My main questions are:

1. What would be the best way to insulate this ceiling?

2. Should I frame between the existing beams with additional lumber to create cavities for insulation?

3. What type/thickness of insulation would you recommend for a hot Hawaii climate?

4. Would I need to leave an air channel/ventilation space between the insulation and the roof sheathing?

5. What would be the best way to attach drywall when the existing beams are spaced 46-3/8" apart?

6. Would you recommend adding furring strips/strapping across the bottom of the existing beams before hanging drywall?

I'm trying to do this correctly rather than just stuffing insulation between the beams and covering it up.

What would you do if this were your house? Any advice on the proper assembly, framing, insulation, vapor/air control, and drywall attachment would be greatly appreciated.

I have a maple “countertop” than I need to fit around this tree.

Tree is not perfectly centered in the opening, of course.

I essentially made a profile jig using 3/4 mdf (same thickness as maple top, so I marked where the finished top will sit) and a load of wood shims with a point cut on each piece.

I genuinely had no other idea how I could do this. Thoughts?

I didn’t feel like starting to cut the top because I didn’t want to ruin my evening 😅

I'm working on a wainscoting project for the first time and I'm a bit hesitant because I'm not sure if the clients wall has pipes behind it or not, therefore, any tips of making sure if I'm in the clear? The ceiling has a few pipes, if they are going towards the wall I'm working on, I should assume that yes there is a pipe there somewhere?

Let me see some pics of your lumber/scrap wood storage. I need some inspiration. Mine is an absolutely mess and the board I need always seems to be the board on the bottom.

I’m looking to add a side table to my pergola and drew up some plans. The inside span is about 9’, the posts are 6x6. I was thinking of a super simple design of 2 2x6 cedar boards through bolted to the posts and then a 12x2” table top on top of them.

Thoughts? I’ve included my little plan drawing and picture of where I’m planning on building it next to the hot tub.

Should I rethink the design? Add a couple of 45s on either end?

Do I need to put up a vapour barrier in an unconditioned seasonal cottage? I was going to install sound and fire insulation because I want a low R value and mostly gets used in the summer with no air conditioning. Occasionally I’m up there (northish Ontario) near the end of October and use a small space heater over night. Should I put up a vapour barrier or because it’s almost always the same temperature inside and outside does it not make sense to?

Best way to tighten up the 2 by 2 railing?

The railing was just nailed in and now it's loose and I do not want the liability so I'm wanting to tighten this up.

I am not a carpenter by trade but I do know that on boards this narrow they are likely to split.

I need some recommendations on how to go about this? Which screw to use or maybe there's some sort of bracket?
