I found once I studied opening principles the intermediate wasn't so bad. They usually tear you up with some opening gambits or weird moves that will best you up. They will eventually start blundering pieces one after another.
silman books are good. I really enjoyed simple chess by stean (small but fantastic book). power of pawns by hickl is also good. I would also recommend a good endgame book like shereshevsky's book. ultimately, I think its best to focus on strategy and technique in addition to calculation. for puzzles try 1001 exercises for club players which I also enjoyed. suprisingly, checkmate patterns manual has some very challenging puzzles - I also recommend this one.
there are plenty of free books if you don't mind looking online at older books on the internet archive. main issue is that you might run into descriptive notation which can be more cumbersome to study. older authors which likely have free online books include lasker, euwe, reinfield, golombek, chernev, pachman, kotov, keene, etc...
