Knight takes the pawn on E4.

White has to option to either:

  1. Protect the rook by moving it to safety
  2. Throw something in the middle of the diagonal to hope to trade off bishop/knight
  3. Take the Knight and let the Rook fall

All 3 options are advantage to Black. Best is probably option 1, then Black can just move right back to where it started on F6

man i was staring at this for far too long without realizing the b pawn was no longer blocking the diagonal

Wouldn’t that be worse positioning though? They lose a pawn and a rook, but I lose knight and I am no man’s land

Nxe4 and the g7 bishop aim directly at the a1 rook, whatever white does (Qxe4 or dxe4)

I analyzed the image and this is what I see. Open an appropriate link below and explore the position yourself or with the engine:

Black to play: chessvision.ai | chess.com | lichess.org

My solution:

Hints: piece: Knight, move: Nxe4

Evaluation: Black is better -2.26

Best continuation: 1... Nxe4 2. Qxe4 Bxa1 3. d4 Rb6 4. dxc5 Nxc5 5. Qc4 Ne6 6. Be3 Rc6 7. Qe4 f5 8. Qd5 Rd6 9. Qc4
