Announcement Small update/clarification to our rules on AI

Hello all,

Just wanted to share a clarification, and expansion of our rules about AI generated posts and comments on r/chromeOS.

First off, a reminder that responding to support requests on this subreddit with responses directly generated from any LLM has been not allowed under Rule 8: Effort Must be Made When Requesting and Providing Help for over a year now.

The fact is, most people come to r/chromeOS to speak to people. If people wanted to get answers from LLMs, they're accessible enough that people could ask them themselves. It just seems like a slap in the face to come for help and to just get a lazy response from someone who copy/pasted a (usually incorrect) response from Gemini or another LLM, which the poster could have done themselves if they wanted.

In addition, recently there's been a lot of misinformation being posted on the subreddit about recent changes to ChromeOS, updates about both ChromeOS and the upcoming AluminiumOS, and new devices, usually only crediting Gemini as a source. There has also been plenty of AI-generated reviews and self promo (the latter primarily posted by bots).

In general, while I know it seems like we’ve been sleeping as mods (yes, we’ve seen the reports calling us out on that), we would still like to try our best to try and keep this community higher quality.

We’ve decided that due to this, we wanted to officially expand this rule to include all posts and comments generated by AI. This rule primarily has LLMs in mind.

This does not include discussion about AI features being built into ChromeOS. Discussion of AI features being built into the OS is allowed.

Announcement Announcement - "chrultrabook" posts, AKA regarding attempting to put Windows or another OS onto your Chromebook, will no longer be allowed.

Hey there!

In short, as of today, this subreddit will be removing and redirecting posts that seek advice on replacing the operating system on your Chromebook.

In the past these posts were allowed with a disclaimer that better support would likely be found elsewhere, such as r/chultrabook and their associated communities. However that subreddit is now archived and they now only provide support on their forum.

Since then there has been a rise in posts like this here, and we're simply not equipped to provide meaningful support. We've received lots of feedback over the past few months and the general consensus was that everyone is better served if these posts are now permanently directed elsewhere.

To be clear, we are not discouraging anyone from attempting this process; it's still cool, (potentially) fun and can unlock more utility from your device! The only change is that posts seeking support for this will be removed.

Thanks for understanding!

Troubleshooting Problem with keyboard Lenovo Duet 5

Recently bought a Lenovo Duet for my little brother. I started everything up, which went smoothly until I wanted to type on the keyboard. Basically, the keyboard seems to be connected to the chromebook, but it just refuses to type anything. I also get a notification regarding a critical update of the keyboard where it tells me to restart the chromebook. I have done that multiple times. I've tried everything to fix the issue, like cleaning the pins and resetting. Nothing seems to fix it.

What do I do?

Troubleshooting Strange Boot-Up. I'm Clueless

SOLVED!

For the last two years I booted up my Chromebook by entering the device password. That is untill yesterday when it booted into my Google login page. When I rebooted it did the exact same thing. Im clueless as to why this happened. How do I enter my device's password without having to implement a complete Google login every time I boot up?

Buying Advice Recommendations Needed!

Hey Reddit! I have an Acer Chromebook Spin 511 (R753T), and I'm looking for a stylus for my work. I'm not sure how most styluses work, so any advice is helpful. I know I'm looking for a stylus with palm rejection, but most of what I'm seeing on Amazon either doesn't say it's compatible with my Chromebook or doesn't have palm rejection. Again, any help is appreciated, and I look forward to seeing what y'all say. All the love!

Troubleshooting Alternative fix for Play Files not showing

I searched for this solution on this sub but did not see anything - so thought I would share here.

My SO was having an issue with Play Files not showing up when he clicked on the Files app - all he had showing were Downloads and a new folder he created this morning. We tried the other options (stopped before hitting any resets) like 'restart' etc.

I checked his system and the files were clearly still there, going by the amount of space used, we just could not see them in the files app. So I went to Play Store to get ready to install an alternative and that took a long time to open. As soon as it did open the Play Files folder showed up.

I assume Play Store was doing some checks in the background and refreshing/reinstalling the folder/app, hence it taking a long time to work, but it did work!

Hope someone else finds this helpful.

Troubleshooting 313 uninstalls this month. +469% vs previous period. 😬

Dashboard screenshot attached.

I’m building Privacy Blur for WhatsApp Web and before pushing harder on growth, I want to fix retention.

For Chrome extension developers: what would you investigate first?

Onboarding? Permissions? Performance? Missing features? Bad defaults?

I’m also considering adding an uninstall feedback page.

If this was your extension, what would you fix first?

Buying Advice Best Chromebooks in India within ₹1,00,000?

I want a Chromebook within ₹1,00,000 INR with a long battery life and a good or powerful processor. My usage will be mainly for digital art, YouTube, e-mail, watching films and TV series, learning a musical instrument through it, browsing on the internet and listening to songs.

Or should I just wait for the upcoming Googlebook? And what is their expected price range and technical specifications?

Thanks!

Troubleshooting Any way to gain HW graphics acceleration in Linux apps on the Duet 9 (Mediatek Kompanio 838)?

Just got a Google Ciri and its drawing apps support is absymal: none supports pen pressure sensitivity (that includes Excalidraw) and the Android apps are lacking or paid, except for Krista that's too complex. The only good candidate would be some Linux apps like Xournal++ or Rnote, I tried the Rnote Flatpak but it's tremendously laggy as it uses virtualized software rendering. Anybody got a fluid experience for GTK apps on Linux in general?

Troubleshooting Chromebook crashing every 5-30 seconds?

My chromebook has been repetitively crashing for the last couple days and I need help fixing it. Important background knowledge: it has no functioning battery. I keep it plugged in constantly, and the moment it’s unplugged, it dies. The crashing started after I unplugged it because it was frozen and wouldn’t turn off. I’ve only reopened google and have a single tab open at a time, so I don’t think I’m overloading the system or anything….

I know it’s a piece of crap that needs replacing, but is there any chance I can fix it??

Discussion What apps should I install ?

My Macbook Pro was stolen and I have a Chromebook now. I kinda like the OS, it's decent.

I am a Software Developer, so I rely a lot on the Terminal and I have already installed VSCode.

What I find in the Play Store looks a bit experimental to me and all done for Android.

What more cool apps can I install ?

Buying Advice Looking for best chromebook for students, what would you recommend?

I’m looking for a Chromebook for school and I’m mainly prioritizing battery life and performance. I’ll mostly be using it for taking notes, browsing, and school apps, so I want something portable but still powerful enough to stay smooth with multiple things open.

My budget is around $1,200, but I’m not sure if I actually need to spend that much for what I’ll be doing. What Chromebook would you recommend for a student who wants something small with good battery life and solid performance? Thanks!

Please, help!

Edit: nothing happened after 5h. I tried esc+power and it gave me a screen asking for the image to recover the Chromebook. I do not want to recover it, reinstall it. I want to have my files.

Please, please, help.

I just powered it off. There was an option for that after I tried esc+power a second time.

I am really freaking out.

Troubleshooting Unable to login to Chromebook

Left my Chromebook alone for about a month, and tried using it again today. Unfortunately, it doesn't let me sign in. I am positive I am typing in the correct password, as I changed it at least three times today, including once on my phone before attempting to login. I can even use a guest login, and login to Google via browser as a guest, using the same password. But it will still not allow me to sign into my account properly on the Chromebook login. All I get is "Something went wrong."

I am able to create a profile and login just fine with a secondary account, but of course, that doesn't have access to the local files of the primary account.

I have tried updating the OS through the secondary account, and I tried the hardware reset I found on Chromebook forums. But neither of these solved the issue.

Any other methods I can try, or am I looking at a factory reset?

Troubleshooting ASUS Chromebook on 151.0.7922.221 keeps dropping wi-fi

My mother's Acer Chromebook has suddenly started to disconnect from wifi randomly. I am in another city, so I can't mess with it easily, but I have verified that every other device in her network is connecting and staying connected (TVs, phones, macbooks) but there appears to be an issue with this chromebook, the only one in the network. She's on the latest release of ChromeOS 151.0.7922.221. Is anyone else seeing problems like this?

I have walked her through clearing the network cache and flushing the socket pools and restarting but it didn't fix anything. I also walked her through deleting all networks and adding her network back in as preferred and it still happens.

Discussion Is there any way to improve the ChromeOS file manager and behavior?

ChromeOS has the most primitive, useless and stupid file handling in any app/OS ever (I use the term OS very lightly)

Its amazing how bad it is.

  • save a page/file again, you just get (1), (2), no prompt, no option. same thing if you happen to copy files
  • no file path in file manager, no back/fwd, no features at all
  • It lies about 'not able to delete/empty trash' all the time
  • hasn't changed in decades, its effectively the same Files app written on launch as some 10% extra dev project

I'm on the latest build, I've tried beta and dev channels. none of those have any difference, since of course Files gets no updates.

No, dont suggest using an alternate file manager in crostini. thats an entirely separate thing. I'm talking about ChromeOS itself.

and here's the best part - Files is a web app written in html/js, it uses internal api's to access the fs. so its not like they can't update or fix it, esp now with AI. in fact it'd be trivial to do, its so barebones.

Troubleshooting After update 151.0.7922.221 my chromebook now boots into a black screen for a couple of seconds

I have an Acer Chromebook plus 515 and I just updated it to the latest version (151.0.7922.221). Now whenever I turn on my Chromebook and login it will sit on a black blank screen for about 3 seconds before loading into the OS. Has anybody else noticed this new black screen after logging in?
