Stage fright

I know there's no shortcuts or magic tricks about this, but in a little more than a week I'll have a recital and I'm being wracked with anxiety already in advance. Stage fright has killed me the last couple of times I performed. My breathing got messed up due to fear and I fought the urge to just... run off stage lmao. This isn't even that big of a deal and the audience will be mostly family and friends, but still I'm finding myself constantly wound up.

I know the fright is natural and of course will never be fully gone, but I'd appreciate some tips from folks with similar issues.

Vocal Progress asap?

I've been great vocaly all summer, then took a ten day vacation and can't seem to bounce back since. Breath support is weak, mid section notes feel shallow and my coloratura is way sloppier. I get tired easier but resting doesn't seem to make things better. I have an important audition in october and need to be at my best asap. Do you have any tips/ routines? Has anyone gone through something similar? Any advice is welcome:)

Preparing for conservatoire

I’ve recently been accepted to a Conservatoire University to study vocals, after only a year of vocal lessons. I have the technical skills but not as much experience as others. I’ve only learnt a few songs, and was wondering what basic soprano vocal pieces I should have a look over before uni, or learn before my course starts.

Any suggestions? Thank you so much. X

Problem singing coloratura

Post image
3 Upvotes

This amateur singer is practicing Bachs Weinachts (Christmas)-Oratorium. I could use some pointers for learning a coloratura. I am stuck at the part in Jauchzet Frohlocket: Cantate 1 bar 142 Herrlichen Choren. I think there is a rhythm with the longer notes but I don’t seem to get it. Any advice? I have the practice CD so I hear how it should be done. But cant replicate.

PS I sing the bass part

Is there any interaction between the Austrian/German and Italian opera worlds?

You know how Austria, Germany, and Italy are famous for opera. Broadly speaking, the opera world is often divided into Austria/Germany on one side and Italy on the other. Is there much exchange between the opera scenes of Austria/Germany and Italy? (I mean among various entities like theaters, conductors, orchestras, singers, music universities, conservatories, etc.)

For example, do Italian theaters sign contracts with German singers? Do Italians study at German music universities? Do Austrian/German singers and Italian singers actually interact and work together?

Since I'm Korean, I'm not very familiar with the local situations in Austria, Germany, and Italy. I get the impression that there might not be much active exchange, and that it's mostly just works by Italian composers being performed in Austrian/German theaters. What do you think?

If anyone is knowledgeable about this, please let me know. It would be even better if you are actually from Austria, Germany, or Italy!

Vocal dysmorphia?

I know this isn’t the right term but I don’t know what else to call it. I’m just curious as to if anyone has experienced this or has any tips on how to handle it. I made a recording that really mattered to me and for the life of me I can’t tell if I’m satisfied with it or not (no I don’t want to share it as I’ve shared it publicly under my real name and don’t like to connect it with this account and this isn’t really about gauging the quality but more the experience I’m having). It’s one of my best videos on one platform, is doing well on one, and is slow to get views but well above average like ratio on the other. I was happy with it when I posted it. But now, every time I hear it, I hear something different. And not like different things are jumping out to me. It’s entirely different. Sometimes it sounds awful. Sometimes it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done. Sometimes it even sounds like there’s something wrong with the mic. It’s kinda freaking me out and making me think there’s something wrong with me. Am I alone here?

Update: I listened back and realize why it was bothering me so much. It’s good but it’s not my best bc I’m dealing with a health issue that my change in tone was the first sign of. Getting some testing done tomorrow. Pay attention to your voices people. They can reveal a lot.

Found an Opera teacher in my area and getting ready for lessons. I can afford 2 or 3 forty-five minute sessions per month. Is this enough, in your opinion, to help me learn to sing Opera well if done for a year or two?

I‘ve been told some popular operas aren‘t even done in many amateur/semi-pro productions (The Ring Cycle, for example). But I want to spend years studying such roles. What operas are frequently reliably performed in the US by amateurs/semi-pros?

Physical appearance and casting: 5‘5 stocky 42 year old (who looks to be about 30) here wondering if he will be rejected for certain dramatic roles due to stature, weight, looking a bit young.

I really would love to try out for dramatic Wagnerian roles. Alberich sounds like a very interesting character. He is meant to be a dwarf-sized character…but I tend to see guys taller than me on stage in the videos I see. I know I can‘t perform that role at the moment, as I am a beginner…but such roles are what I ultimately desire in the end.

Willing to wear 3“ elevator shoes, lose weight and slap on a fake beard, if necessary lol

I (14M) am a musical theatre performer and have been told I have operatic potential and sound like Anthony Warlow. I am not interested to go into opera apart from perhaps G&S and was wondering your thoughts?

Questions about Opera and Process

For all of the knowledgeable classical singers, teachers, and really just anyone who has information/advice for me, I've been wondering about a few things so I know more of what to expect in my dreams to sing opera. I am a 16 year old male junior in high school in the United States, and I have only ever known singing bass/low in choir for about 2.5 years. I'm starting vocal lessons within about 2-3 weeks, but overall I would consider myself a very amateur singer. Here are my questions:

How long may it take for me before I am "fully trained"?

When would I generally get my Fach classification?

What does the rehearsal and performing practice roughly look like? (i.e. how long might it take, or the different things you may be doing in practice)

And finally, what might generally be the earliest path for me to get to a taste of what professional opera is like?

Is it normal bass-baritone c4 feels hard?

I’m trying to learn Caro mio Ben, and find the c4 kinda hard. I Can hit it but it sounds quite poor and more likely I’m pushing the sound out. I feel a distinct shift at A3 and C4 is really builds up. My teacher says it’s fine for now And be more in tune with body. However he says it’s hot high enough to deliberately mix or modify vowels.

Songs for an audition in 5 days

So I'm in this class and they told me I have to audition for the show (Hänsel and Gretel) in 5 days. I need one operatic aria or art song and one golden age musical theatre piece (in English preferably) that is easier to learn. It takes me a second to learn songs so I'm kind of freaking out. Does anyone have any suggestions?

EDIT: I am an intermediate mezzo :P

Im 18 and I’ve been a big opera enjoyer for 2 years. I enjoy singing a lot but I’ve always disliked my chest voice for as long as I can remember, tho I know chest coordination is a very important factor to produce a healthy and supported sound. This led me to sing in a “falsetto”(?) which became stronger with practice. I had a couple lessons with a teacher, who said I am a baritone, but who would also make me exercise all of my rage (from G2-A4 in chest voice and B3-A5 in this “falsetto”). She used to always push me to my limits, after every lesson I would lose my voice, and she would say that I needed to make my low notes lighter and that I had to make my overall voice lighter. I read these statements as red flags and stopped my vocal lessons. I’m asking for actual raw feedback on my timbre and vocals, even tho this recording is pretty short I think it’s the most decent one I have.

As a baritone just starting out, I’m looking for some more moving, dramatic Italian and Germanic roles similar to Michele in Puccini’s The Cloak and Kurwenal in Tristan und Isolde and Alberich in Siegfried by Wagner.

Is this just a pipedream?

I just started formally training (29F). I've always loved singing but did more pop singalongs in my car. I've always dreamed of classical singing, getting to be dramatic and hopefully share the emotion I feel inside with others.

Well I finally decided to give it a try and my voice teacher said I'm a dramatic soprano. She said I could definitely join a choir, and I could audition for an organization she directs when I'm ready. I trust her, she's accomplished so much and I respect her so much. But I just feel so discouraged, I don't see how I could possibly stand a chance against/alongside people that have been singing and performing their whole lives. I have zero theater background, all I have is the delusion I could be part of something and get to create art with people.

What is the actual likelihood that could ever happen? What would I need to do to get there? I have been training for a couple months bi-weekly, and of course sing every chance I get in between. I shared with her that I feel I've hit a wall and I'm discouraged, and she told me she can hear how much I've improved but I worry she's just being nice. I know competition is fierce, and I'm barely working my way through the 24 Italian Songs and Arias and I have so much to learn.

There's just so many arias that make me tear up listening to them and I just want to be a part of those stories.

Ear plug recommendations for choral singing with orchestra

I'm a choral bass and am often positioned near the brass and percussion sections when we sing with orchestras, which is quite often, and I'm worried about hearing damage from all the banging and tooting.

Does anyone have recommendations for earplugs that can be used to attenuate the sound from the orchestra that a) still leave me able to hear well enough to judge my own volume/balance and tune with the singers around me, and b) don't just fill my ears with the bone-conducted sound of my own voice, which is the main reason I don't get on with normal foam earplugs?
