Advice Wanted How do I stop feeling so drained before actually doing much work?

Upvotes

I am a freshman in my second week of college. I live at home and my daily schedule with activities and classes is roughly this, with a 15 minute drive home from campus:

Monday:
8-9:30 am: Class
10-11 am: Lift
11:15-12:00: Lunch
(Lunch and Lifting usually on campus in dining hall and rec center)
1-1:45 pm: Class
Wait for next class while doing HW
4-5 pm: Class

Tuesday:
10-11:45 am: Class
12-12:45 pm: Lunch
1-2 pm: Lift
Wait for next class while doing HW
4:50 pm: Class

Wednesday:

8-9:30 am: Class
Wait for next class while doing HW

11-12:30 pm: Class

1-1:50 pm: Class
2-2:30 pm: Eat
2:45-3:45 pm: Lift
4-5 pm: Class

Thursday:
10-11:45 am: Class
12-12:45 pm: Lunch
1-2 pm: Lift
Wait for next class while doing HW
4:50 pm: Class

Friday:
10:30-11:30 am: Lift
1-2 pm: Class
3:45-11 pm: Work

Saturday:
10 am-11 pm (Most Likely) OR 10 am- 3:45 pm OR 3:45-11 pm: Work

Sunday:
Off

I have been still trying to get an actual schedule down and have not been following this to a tee exactly when it comes to all the stuff in between classes, some days I have gone and talked to professors or went to lunch with friends at other times, so this is just my best estimate of what my days look like. But like I said it doesnt really make sense for me to go home, when I have less than a 2 ish hour break between classes, when 30 minutes of that time is spent driving, but also just using the gas when I dont have to is not ideal for me. Plus, parking on camps for commuters is TERRIBLE at my school, so days I have 8 am classes (Mon & Wed), I usually get there before most people so I get a good spot, then just try to stay for the whole day. That's where the main issue is. I am on campus from 8 am to 5 pm on Monday and Wednesdays. And on thursdays and tuesdays, 10 am to 5 pm. Then Friday's it sucks because I spent 30 minutes total driving to one lecture class at a weird time so it breaks up the day weirdly. Then I obviously have work until 11 that starts just two hours after I get out of my friday class. Again, not a whole lot of time to go home when I need to spend 30 minutes of driving plus time to get ready for work. (Little side rant, I also get distracted very easily and have very ADHD-like tendencies. I have a hard time opening books and studying when I know I have to be somewhere in under an hour. I am someone who needs to clear my mind, sit down with everything, and just do it for a while with no interruptions. When it gets broken up constantly while studying and doing homework is super difficult for me). So anyway, side bar over, my issue is that I spend so much time and energy just FIGURING OUT what I have to do for the day and mentally segmented and compartmentalizing responsibilities and assignments and classes and activities, that when I get home most days, I am just burnt out because even though I havent done much actualy studying or homework yet, I am just burnt out from thinking about school all day and being there for long periods of time. I am really trying to get used to it from high school because it was so structured and segmented because I went to school, did most of my work in school, besides obvious occasional homework, then went home, and had plenty of uninterrupted time to do my assignments/homework easily. But now that college's workload, seemingly, is all work that is done outside of class, combined with the fact that the only things that we seem to do in class is listen to lectures and do occasional assignments or work, it feels like a nightmare for my attention span and tendency to drift off and get distracted. Managing college is so overstimulating to me, atleast for right now, which is terrible for my style of learning and organizational-style. Also my college's online platform/software (basically their style of google classroom) sucks because it is so unorganized and confusing. Plus, all of the professors use different software and websites and programs to give out assignments and turn those assignments in, that keeping track of all that stuff is mentally draining to me plus just absorbing all the info I need to bc, yk, its college. By the way, wait, I should probably try to make some friends and join clubs and, wait, I need to know what I want to do with the rest of my life because I am paying for all of this and this matters a lot???

Any advice on things I should try to structure my day better and stop being so overstimulated all of the time, and be able to actually organize without constantly having to worry about and remember things?

Advice Wanted r/college is the most useless subreddit on earth

Post image
Upvotes

I got perma banned for this, and then when I asked why, they muted me so I can’t speak to them

Can someone ask me why or what I did wrong to get PERMA banned from making one post????? Like honestly. Why have a college subreddit that bans people for asking valid college questions. It’s so weird. Yet they don’t ban the people who ask about showers (which is a valid question too), that’s just weird and susses me tf out. I hope to everything that this mod team gets re-evaluated, because that is just fucking crazy

Also please respond to the original post, I genuinely need advice. I’m praying for advice

Somehow they made learning any new information frustrating and unbearable. It's also really cool that if you click the read about concept option, the worst highlight in the world makes it so obnoxious and hard to actually read anything. Absolutely seething that I have a million fucking assignments to do with this dogshit program.

Advice Wanted Crazy Overwhelmed After First Week

I only have three classes and almost halfway in the second week and I feel really overwhelmed. My online math class had us do over 100 math problems, 6 lecture videos and doing a quiz in the first week. Apparently quizzes have to be at a extremely specific format and requires me to print them out. I don't have a printer at home and the printer on campus requires a bunch of steps I can't figure out. (The link to download the app required doesn't work).

I had to leave at the beginning of a film editing class because I was completely lost. The hard drive I had to use didn't have the cable to plug into the computer and I missed out on the lessons in the beginning. The teacher was explaining important things and I couldn't remember the link to access it. The teacher kept going and everyone else on class had no trouble while I was completely lost. I left out of fustration and cried in the bathroom for an hour. Especially since I want to become a film editor and I couldn't figure out the basics.

Parking is a nightmare every day. I have to start the school day with stressing out with finding a spot on time. And on top of all that, I got a bad sore throat and brain fog that makea it harder to focus. I'm super overwhelmed right now and I'm kind of considering dropping out

No advice wanted (Vent) Professors are not giving feedback and the classes are not structured enough!

I am someone who LOVE feedback. The good stuff motivates me to keep going and the bad stuff helps me improve. I thrive on it.

Over the summer, I took three classes. Two of my professors gave amazing comments, they praised my writing, arguments, and insights but also let me know when I missed something or didn't quite hit the mark. The course calander was full and I knew exactly what was expected and when. I loved it.

Fall semester starts and all my professors have said basically, "you're not being graded on your ability or even the content, just that you're doing the work." What?! I'm a college junior, not a kindergartner. Grade my writing, my understanding, my efforts, leave me feedback! And the calendar? Don't even get me started. It's freaking blank! I like to be able to look at everything I have to do and make a plan, how can I do that without a calendar?

I hate this fluid, do the work and get the A thing. I don't want to feel like I could do the bare minimum and pass. I want to bust my ass and put in the effort AND get the feedback!

Also, one of my professors seriously doesn't understand how much work she's giving us. Especially since she's not grading the content. I think i just reazlized the problem I have with this semester. It feels like it's all just busy work. Read the massive amount of shit, write your discussion posts, reply to two classmates, now do this assignment that will only be graded based on if you turn it in. What's the point if you're not grading it based on substance? I hate it and these classes are making me regret even going back to school.

Thanks for letting me vent.

Advice Wanted i'm unsure if college is for me, or it's just my program that's not for me

i (20F) have spent the last 2 years working towards getting into a funeral services program at my college, since being an embalmer was the career i picked out for myself in my senior year of high school. i got into said program this fall, and today was my first day.

while completing the prerequisite courses for my program, i never had this feeling of dread and nervousness like i've had a week before today. something is telling me this is not the choice for me, and i'll be wasting my time/i've wasted my time doing this.

additionally, ever since i was little i had a passion for marine life - specifically sharks. i've always told myself that some path in marine biology would be a "back up plan," but it's starting to seem *way* more appealing than my current program. and that's not to say i'm not fascinated with the process of embalming just as i was in high school, but it's starting to creep up on me that this might be just a fascination and not a passion for a career.

another aspect of this is that my college is paid for by a fund my grandfather has had set up since i was born. if i were to suddenly drop out OR swap career paths, i know he would think less of me and say i'm "wasting my time" or "wasting his money" (things he's said to me before when i was taking too long for his liking.)

what do i do? do i just finish this semester then drop out? do i finish the semester, leave the program, and switch? i'm worrying myself sick about this

Discussion Why are professors so comfortable with making their class pricey

So many of my professors are youngish to the point that I would've thought they'd remembered being in college. I thought some would avoid making college expensive, but most professors dont even seem to make an effort.

I understand forcing your students to pay for a textbook if you're teaching a math or chemistry course or something, how else could you learn? In my case though, I feel like it's a bit ridiculous to require every student to throw 100 dollars at an Ebook for African film of all things. No offense to all the film professors out there, but really? Do I really need 100 dollars to be gone from my bank account so I understand how to watch movies? They couldn't have found a single way to teach that with free materials?

In a different class, my professor demanded students pay for 7 paperback or hardcover books from one author because fuck us I guess. Even though ebooks work fine she just was so desperate for us to annotate on the book itself.

Im just so sick of this ignorance. Why do professors hate being reasonable? None of them consider "hey maybe 100 dollars on a book someone will never use again is a bit much." Is it that hard to be considerate?

No advice wanted (Vent) Professor doesn't tolarate not even one minute of being late, but it's impossible to eat and arrive at time

So, I study in France and the university restaurants here are a mess, I stay like 40 minutes only on the line and I have to eat super fast because there are also lines to leave your dirty plate, we got 1 minute late for class and the professor didn't let us in. It's just seems so abusive, I wish I could eat my own food but the university restaurant is only 1 euro which is such a huge help financially...

No advice wanted (Vent) I haven't made a single friend and I am about to graduate

I am in the fall of my senior year and unfortunately I am going to have to cope with the fact that I have no friends.

Making friends is something I have never been particularly good at. After a point (I think it was around sophomore year of high school when we were able to go back to school after lockdown) I just was never able to find connections like I used to. I shriveled into myself and that kinda was the end of it.

I tried, I really did. I went to parties, hung out, did internships, went shopping, went to clubs, did all the things, the only time where I actually able to talk to people like a human was when I was drunk or high. But not once did I feel like..."Yeah these are my people."

I don't laugh anymore, not with people anyway. I don't go out unless its with my boyfriend, I don't smile. When I talk it feels foreign, like ive forgotten how to talk to people. It comes out awkward and dry.

I don't blame others for not wanting to be my friend as I know it's my own fault. I'm not a easy person to like. I'm not a happy person. I'm not funny, social, or even smart.

Idk man, it just sucks that when I graduate I will have to do it knowing I did it alone. And when my family asks me where are my friends at? I'm gonna have to look them in the face and tell them

....I don't have any.

BUT HEY, I'm getting that degree bitches!

No advice wanted (Vent) I hate college so much

I hate all these stupid assignments and stupid exams and I hate my stupid major. I'm a final semester senior and honestly I hate what I'm doing now because all these classes have ruined any passion I had for the subject.

I hate my professors and how they all expect me to prioritize their class while I try not to burn out for like the 5th time. I know that if I push myself a little more then I can do better but I'm just so exhausted with trying to obtain this stupid degree.

I honestly wish I would just get hit by a bus or something so I dont have to do this anymore and I know other people don't have the same opportunity as me but I hate it so much I'd rather die than be here.

No advice wanted (Vent) i already hate my professors

this is a new record for how fast a professor can piss me off! i’m actually impressed! barely answering emails, giving people an attitude for asking basic questions that could be attached to the syllabus but oops! there’s no syllabus to be found! And when class is supposed to start, he replies to no email.

does this class even fucking exist? Then my other Professor has an AI slop syllabus that could easily be identified as ChatGPT. It’s like he didn’t even attempt to edit out the emojis at the end of practically every sentence and this shit is barely coherent and he won’t even respond to the emails either. The slop claims that the text book is accessible and easy to find but the only trustworthy source sells a copy for 300 fucking dollars. great!

Advice Wanted I want to go to a college party but how?

I wanna go to a college party really bad which is sad maybe to admit lol but they sound fun as someone who has never been and I consider myself pretty extroverted and carefree. I just transferred to this school as a senior though and its only the second week of school, and I don’t even live on campus I have my own apartment so I feel like it’s really hard to get included in stuff. anyone have any suggestions?

Advice Wanted My geology professor has three AI assignments scheduled for this year.

Hi all, for a quick background, I switched my major from CJ to environmental science last March so this is my first semester with classes for my new major. My geology prof has three AI assignments that are each worth 36 points. The class has 800 points total, meaning ~13.5% of my final grade will come from them.

The dilemma: I am very anti-ai. Mainly because I am an artist and environmentalist. I refuse to use it. For these assignments I have to use ChatGPT (I cant even use Ecosia's AI, which is my browser of choice because of their positive environmental impact).

The goal of one of the assignments is to teach us that we cannot trust everything AI says/provides and to help us think critically about AI results. Another assignment's goal is to help us identify rocks. The third is supposed to demonstrate how you can use AI to brainstorm, learn new things, and improve your life.

What really pisses me off: this professor claims to "stand with all movements that seek to end injustices, uplift people, promote diversity, equality, and peace, and create a just and more equitable world to live in. If you are making an effort toward these ends and think I can help, please let me know..." Yet requires us to use ChatGPT and doesn't mention anything about alternative assignments for students who feel uncomfortable with AI use. He also provides AI prompts to help us create study guides but says that we can only use content from the class that we upload into the prompts. If I cant use any outside sources, I definitely dont need a bot to make me a study guide. I dont care if it takes me longer to put together.

Maybe Im just too black-and-white, or unfamiliar with traditional (rather than social) science culture surrounding AI, but this does not sit right with me at all. I plan on talking to him about how I feel about these assignments. I refuse to sacrifice my morals for a class covering a topic that I'm not even interested in pursuing.

What do you think about this?
Has anyone encountered a situation like this before? If so, how did you handle it?

I'll take input from anyone (students, professors, developers, pro-AI, anti-AI, literally anyone). Give me your unbiased or at least less biased opinions. I know I am biased against AI, so maybe I'm not seeing the benefits these assignments could give me.

Advice Wanted How to enjoy college socially

I went for about 2 years and then dropped out because I was genuinely just very unhappy with everything so I didn’t go last year. Had a change of heart and went through the process of reenrolling and started today and I already feel i’m behind. In my first 2 years I was pretty quiet and barely made any friends or even connections. Walked around campus for a bit and went to 2 of my classes and there’s either groups of people that are already formed or in one of my classes basically nobody talked (cs major). It sucks because I genuinely don’t know what to do about it, it’s only been a day and i’m assuming there are some opportunities to meet people on campus and I’ll probably get to know people in my classes as the semester goes on but that’s also just not guaranteed

Discussion Why go to college to not do work?

I can understand not wanting to do work in high school, no one likes mandatory schooling. But, most if not all people choose to go to college. I just started community college last week, and the stories that teachers have told us is insane. In one of my classes theres a lot of group work as well, and I already know who to avoid being in a group with because they're on their phone 90% of class and don't participate. I guess the only scenario I can see is someone being pressured into going to college by their parents? Idk, its just baffling because classes fill up fast and someone else could've taken your place who actually wanted to be there.

Advice Wanted I'm Being Forced to Drop a Class. What Should I Do?

Hello All!

I'm currently pursuing my Masters of Science in Nursing. I'm taking two classes this semester. The class in question is a research course. Term started last week. Anyway, I failed to complete a NON-GRADED self assessment survey regarding my ability to evaluate and analyze professional research by the deadline of Sunday evening. That's 100% on me. I have no idea how this happened, I'm a straight A student who never misses deadlines. The instructor is telling me that I cannot pass the class because this assignment was not completed on time. Again, this is simply a non-graded self assessment survey. I spoke to them about this and apologized profusely and begged them to make an exception but they refused, stating they must apply the rules to all students equally. I was very polite and professional. The professor does list this requirement in the Syllabus and a couple other places but made no mention of it in their weekly announcement on the academic portal we use.

Here's the kicker: They stated I could complete the coursework this semester, email it to them for feedback, and then simply submit the assignments NEXT SEMESTER when I retake the course. That's pretty contradictory and illogical is it not? It basically proves that my failure to complete the non-graded assessment on time doesn't actually impact my ability to complete the coursework! The whole thing just seems overly rigid and punitive. I'm not some irresponsible 18 year old college kid who's number one priority is partying; I'm an adult in my early 30s working and attending school full time and I'm paying this university over $50,000 for a degree! I made an honest mistake.

What should I do? Is the professor able to actually enforce this rule listed in the syllabus? I doubt there is an official university rule that aligns with this policy.

Should I go over the professor's head and escalate this issue to the department chair? I'm a little worried that could result in some backlash down the road honestly.

I could just complete the assignments this semester but what if the professor leaves the university or something and all my hard work is for nought!?

TIA for any help/advice.

Advice Wanted Need Help With Mental Health & College

I’m a first year student who just moved in this saturday to college. Like most students, I was thrilled for this opportunity to live on my own and learn myself. After I said my goodbyes to my family, we begun icebreaker stuff with our orientation groups. I was doing fine during this and having fun. Eventually, dinner time hits and students all go to the dining hall to eat. As I stand in line, a wave of emotions hit me. Homesickness, anxiety, sadness, fear, all at the same time. I’m unsure what to do but I compose myself and eat.

A little while later i’m back at my dorm getting prepared for bed and I can’t hold back anymore. I call my parents violently sobbing on the phone about not wanting to be there and needing to go home. I calm down after a while and get to bed. Little did I know the next day would be worse.

Throughout the entire next day I cannot control myself. I’m constantly crying and having to leave whatever activity i’m in to go to the bathroom and cry on the phone with my mom. I reach out to my orientation leader who is very nice and I begin talking to a counselor lady about how I feel. For the most part they are all very nice and considerate about how i’m feeling. After this discussion I go to my dorm and sit outside, contemplating leaving the campus. Eventually, after hours of tears and phone calls with my family, my brother drives to come pick me up and bring me home.

This is where I am now. At home typing this looking for advice. For some extra detail, I have had general anxiety my whole life and i’m medicated in Zoloft for it currently. Also my family is a big support system for me and I appreciate all of their help right now. I guess what i’m looking for possibilities going forward as I am stuck with what to do.

Advice Wanted Failing University, Need some Hope

Context

\\--

Hi, I am 20 going into 3rd year. I grazed past high school with my highest grade in graphic design.

In college, I did fashion and flew by. It was the first thing I have ever been good at, and the only thing I found more interesting than plants plants.

\\--

Problem

\\--

University has been crushing me, I wanted the independence but now I'm treated like a child by my teachers, no matter how much of my soul I pour into my work I get in the 50s at best.

I am barely passing, but I don't want to waste my money by quitting when I'm about to finish 2nd year. What can I do?

\\--

Attempted Solutions

\\--

I have spoken to all the careers advisors made a million calenders then got lost in them, so I made one but couldn't keep that up, I take every note in class, turn up unless I'm down with a cold.

(it's quite often I got sick recently since I moved out, but I've quit my job, meaning more rest, and I haven't changed my whash and clean routines. Doctors told me I have hayfever to the university area I'm in, which I think is stupid but kept up with the useless tablets they gave me for hayfever)

I spend alot of time on my work or at least what I can as I do get burned out so I go socialising, I thought my work life ethic was good at preventing stress but now I'm totally lost at how I'm a total failure at my degree..

\\--

Side Notes

\\--

This was all I have, I'm terrible even at cadets and school and sports. All I have ever enjoyed was sewing, but all my new teachers hate everything I do.

Is there anything I can do to fix this or at least move on in life and have a decent job as a sewist or something.

My hands also shake for pattern cutting, so that's out the question, but I'm good at embroidery and machine sewing, I love working sketches and designing, but designing is not a stable work plan.
