I run knowyourblock.org, a free tool that uses Columbus's public information to show where mold, rats, bad landlords, sewage backups, and more, are being reported to the city.

I just uploaded the August complaint data, and to no one's surprise, there was a significant influx of water damage complaints. If history repeats itself, and I anticipate it will, there's likely going to be a subsequent influx of mold reports here in September especially.

When I first launched the project, I reached out to the city attorney office to see if they could verify that information on the site was being framed accurately. They obliged (which was great - really didn't expect them to get back to me so fast and provide a detailed response). They said the following regarding mold (verbatim)

The key is there is no provision in city code that addresses mold. That is due to its prevalence in almost every house in some form or enough. Some is worse than others. In addition, Code does not house the expertise to address mold specifically. The Department of health has a staff person that we do work with to help us identify and understand the mold present in a unit and the ramification upon the local tenant.

So reporting mold to the city is tough, and it's a type of report that's unusually reliant on the way the report is framed or written. I've also been able to analyze a ton of "mold" related reports and figure out what seems to work best for people in getting their landlord/the city to (hopefully) take action.

With that being said, here are some recommendations on how to report mold to the city:

• No active leak anymore? Report the damage it left behind. Sagging or bulging ceilings, warped floors, deteriorating drywall. City code requires these be kept "sound and in good repair," so damaged materials are citable even after everything's dried out.

• Double-check the roof and gutters. Storm repairs are often just patched (if they're fixed in the first place lol). If water still isn't draining away from the house, it's an ongoing violation (not a past one) and reports the same way.

• Establish that the landlord knew. A violation is stronger than a maintenance request. State plainly that you reported it on [date] and it wasn't fixed. That timeline is what proves neglect rather than a problem the landlord hasn't had a chance to address. Ensure that communication with the landlord is in writing as well.

• Generally try to use the code's own words. Inspectors act on what they can cite. "Deteriorating," "unsanitary," "not in sound repair" land better than "gross" or "moldy." You're handing them the violation, pre-labeled.

• You're protected for reporting. Under Ohio law (ORC 5321.02), a landlord can't legally retaliate (ex, raise rent, evict, cut services) for a good-faith code complaint. Fear of retaliation is the #1 reason people don't file, so it's worth saying out loud.

Wanted to try to give practical advice here before the inevitable influx of reporting in case it helps any one currently going through this (or googling this months later). This is obviously not legal advice. I am not a lawyer. Don't get legal advice from Reddit. If you think you need a lawyer, you probably do.

I have a neighbor that gets picked up in the mornings by a carpool service. When they car arrives usually between 645-7 AM the driver lays on the horn for about 10 seconds to let the neighbor know they’ve arrive. It’s every single weekday and I’ve become increasingly frustrated as it wakes me up every single morning and is very loud and obnoxious. I’ve tried to get in contact with the neighbor directly but have been unsuccessful. The carpool service doesn’t have any signage for a company or individual I could call to ask them to stop, either. Does anyone had any advice on other avenues to get this resolved?

I am looking for any local options to start working on my voice with a professional. Working on it on my own hasn't really amounted to much and I feel like actually being able to receive feedback could be useful.

Rest in peace to author Wendell Berry, our Kentucky neighbor just on the other side of the Ohio River. I just wanted to make a small place to remember him and grieve. I hope to do some small in person ceremonies with loved ones to commemorate Mr Berrys great stature in American hearts and letters, and hopefully do this outdoors as he would have wanted.

But my love and care go out to all of us who have lost a great light. He was always there, teaching and reminding us to slow down and see what is real. I’m 24 black F. I have Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD and Major Depressive Disorder. Thats to say I’m not good in public. I don’t take care of my hair as well as I should. I have sensory issues and cannot stand the feel of creams, water, conditioner, etc on my head and hands. I tried using gloves and thought I could do better but my hair is so thick and impossible to fully detangle, too many fairy knots.

It’s not in hard mats or anything. Right now I want an undercut (back, side shaves) and a wash. my remaining top hair I needed the ends trimmed badly and later on I’ll do some 2 strand twists. This I can handle.

Thing is the thought of going out into public is uncomfortable and dealing with someone judging me and lecturing me about everything I did wrong or just talking shit about me is the last thing I want. I don’t want to sit there while they complain about how tangled it is, I know. I hate it too. all I’m looking for is a cut, trim, and wash. I’ll do the twists somewhere else if I have to.

I‘ve tried detangling at home but I can’t. I don’t know how to, I don’t know how to part my hair, how to section it off. The only thing I know how to do is wash it. I’m extremely tender headed so I never get as close to my roots as I should, I can’t make myself do something that hurts that bad, wet hair or not. I believe my hair is what you would call 4c hair, it’s natural hair. No relaxers or anything.

​Reaching out to anyone living at Parkview Apartments.

​Since ownership consolidated from Dietz Property Group into Cyclone Parkview 216 LLC (managed by Terrace Management), maintenance has essentially ground to a halt, which is a massive red flag when big property firms do that. Active water leaks, rotting window seals, trapped moisture, and the massive pest spikes that come with them are being routinely brushed off in the tenant portal.

​Here is the high-stakes reality, this complex is going down a fast slide into complete slum conditions, but we can take collective action to either turn it around or give ourselves an effective exit strategy to move on to a better place.

​When large property management firms consolidate an asset into a private investment LLC in a multi-unit property like Parkview, they slash maintenance overhead and test the waters to see how much neglect they can get away with while still collecting full rent. This is often referred to as a "cash cow property". Unaddressed window leaks turn into structural wood rot, hidden toxic mold inside the walls, and worsening pest infestations across entire buildings and they'll milk the cow until its effectively dead. If we don't get ahead of this now, conditions will rapidly deteriorate and everyone's living conditions will tank while rent stays high and increases with each lease renewal while simultaneously seeing high Tennant turn over until the place finally becomes the projects of the west side.

​We have to force their hand legally before this place becomes completely unlivable. Stop relying on the tenant portal and file an official complaint with City of Columbus Code Enforcement via 311 immediately.

​How to take action:

​Call Columbus 311 at 614-645-3111 or report online via the Columbus 311 Portal.​ you will file specifically for structural leaks, window seal failures, water damage, or pest intrusion and ​save your 311 confirmation/ticket number.

Maintenance tickets in a portal are easy for management to ignore or mark as "completed" when maintenence stops by and simply shines a flash light on the issue, whereas a stack of active City Code Enforcement violations gets contractors on site within days. The city issues legally binding deadlines for repairs backed by daily compounding municipal fines if management ignores them.

​Also (this is where it pays off), under Ohio Revised Code § 5321.07, having your written repair requests and a 311 report gives you the legal backing needed to open a Rent Escrow account at Franklin County Municipal Court after 30 days. That means your monthly rent gets deposited with the court clerk—not the landlord—until the repairs are certified complete and a city building inspector verifies and signs off on the repairs and the Franklin County Municipal court can and will refund your rent for every month you were living with leaks, mold and pests, from the time you submitted your first neglected maintenence ticket to the time the building inspector signed off on it, which such a refund would give you the funds you need to find a better place to live. Alternatively, if you do not wish to Escrow, the Court can order Parkview to let you out of your lease, free and clear, if you wish to abandon ship altogether.

If you have active leaks or damages, take 5 minutes to file a 311 report today so we can stop this complex from rotting out from under us and potentially move on to a better rental community. Parkview charges Hilton prices for lipstick on a pig, they can afford to fix their dereliction.

So please, let's help ourselves while helping eachother because we're all neighbors in this together.

Hey folks! I'm Mike Schroeder, with the CAHS Education Foundation. We're a 501c charity that helps fund things like new equipment and travel expenses for students to attend events.

We're organizing the 100th anniversary celebration / homecoming / charity event for the school, slated for October 10th, which'll have a variety of activities featured. The one I'm organizing is a D&D room, where we'll have open tables running a very short adventure (and opportunities for people to donate to the charity). The PTA, staff, and everyone else we've talked to has been very excited for it.

However, in true D&D tradition... we need more DMs! We need you!

Specifically, we're looking for volunteers who would be willing to run our custom-built mini-module. These are open tables and the adventure is specifically intended for newcomers to D&D, so experience running for kids, conventions, and other one-shot situations is particularly appreciated (but not strictly necessary).

To be a DM, you must be available for the whole afternoon of Saturday, October 10th. I'll be providing the mini-module and as many supplies as I can bring, including some generous dice and minifig donations from Round Table Games, but we're open to other donations (particularly kobold / cultist figurines, we'll need a lot of those).

A couple of months ago, I experienced Nirvana in a blue-collar True North gas station in Cincinnati. I stopped to get some snacks after moving my step-daughter into her first grown-up apartment and discovered a Cherry Lime-Ade slushie. It was the best slushie I ever had.

Since then, I've been on the lookout for gas stations in Columbus that might also have this delectable treat. Unfortunately, I've yet to find another gas station (or alternative slushie provider) that has this specific flavor.

So, I turn to the masses - r/Columbus, where can I find a Cherry Lime-Ade slushie? I'd prefer not to drive two hours to get another one.

This is a long shot, but my Medtronic 670g broke on Saturday and it was out of warranty. I have exhausted all options with Medtronic, they cannot send loaner because they don’t make my model anymore. I bought a new one, but they are taking forever to process since that department is now overseas. Does anyone have an extra Medtronic pump I can buy? I really don’t want to go another day without a pump. I have it under control now, but it’s not ideal giving shots every 3 hours.
