Hey everyone, I’ve never been a huge Green Lantern fan but Absolutr Green Lantern and Lanterns has me wanting to check out the series. I understand the modern lore for the Lanterns was established in Johns’ run.

Is it a good run to start with or are there earlier runs I should read to better understand the characters?

What i mean are characters that are popular enough to keep getting new stories quite frequently, but not so popular that editorial mandates they have a specific status quo similar to someone like Spider-Man

Ive been reading a lot Moon Knight comics and ive been very surprised by how consistent his character progression is. I can't say ive ever caught him getting stuck

Which side looks the best? It currently holds 3 short boxes and a long box.

Was looking into reading The "wanted* series and was curious if it was any good? I also know that Nemesis is part of the same universe and was going to look into it but I don't want to go to YouTube and have it spoiled for me. I'm wondering what you guys think?

I know she became Mayor of Gotham in the current run close to issue 41, but are there any appearances in the other Batman families worth a read?

I recently got back into comics after being away from them for a long time, and I've been buying and reading a bunch of different stuff trying to figure out what really grabs me.

Hyde Street has probably been the biggest surprise so far. I absolutely love it. I love the Creepshow and Twilight Zone type horror, but I also really like that there seems to be a much bigger story and mythology developing behind everything. The artwork is also a huge part of why I like it. Ivan Reis' art is exactly the kind of comic art I gravitate toward. Detailed, realistic, cool character designs, good monsters, etc.

Geiger was another one I really enjoyed. One thing I'm realizing is that I like having a cool protagonist who actually drives the story forward. Introduce me to an interesting hero, give him a problem or a cool villain, let him start figuring shit out, reveal more interesting stuff about him and the world along the way, and then keep expanding on it. That's probably the easiest way I can describe what hooks me.

King Spawn really grabbed me too. I grew up loving Spawn and apparently that whole aesthetic still works on me. Demons, monsters, supernatural powers, ridiculous character designs, violence, dark atmosphere, all of that is fine with me.

I did go back and start reading the original Spawn from issue 1, though, and so far the actual story hasn't grabbed me nearly as much as King Spawn did. I'm only somewhere around issue 12 or 13, so I'm definitely willing to keep going. The artwork, character and world are still cool as hell. I just find myself wanting the story to get moving more than it has so far.

I've also started dipping my toes into the old Top Cow stuff. I recently picked up The Darkness, Witchblade and Artifacts all at once because I found them for a good price. I actually haven't read The Darkness or Witchblade yet, so I can't say they're things I know I like. I'm going to start working my way through them now. Based on the artwork, the concepts and the whole interconnected supernatural universe, I have a feeling they're going to be right up my alley, but that's still to be determined. And just to get this out of the way, I have absolutely no problem with the ridiculous 90s comic aesthetic. Muscles, sexy women, huge guns, absurd costumes, demons, violence, macho characters, whatever. None of that is going to turn me off a comic. If anything, I miss when comics were comfortable just trying to look fucking cool. I just want there to be an interesting story and world underneath all of it too.

I also REALLY like Mark Spears' Monsters. I love the artwork and the whole classic monster horror vibe. This is what initially broke open the floodgates.

Some other stuff I just picked up is Universal Monsters: Dracula, Rook: Exodus, Redcoat, and Sisterhood: A Hyde Street Story, but I haven't read enough of those yet to really have an opinion.

I checked out Something Is Killing the Children because it keeps getting recommended whenever horror comics come up. The premise sounds like something I would probably like, but I looked through the interior pages and the artwork just doesn't do much for me. That's probably important because I'm realizing that art matters a lot to me with comics. I generally like detailed, realistic, gritty comic art. I'm much less interested in really loose, simplistic or cartoony looking art.

That's also why I'm not necessarily looking only for horror. Sci fi, fantasy, supernatural, action, adventure, superheroes, antiheroes, whatever. I'm pretty open. Horror just happens to be where I've found a lot of stuff I like lately.

Basically, I want something where I'm occasionally turning the page and thinking, "Holy shit, that's fucking cool." Give me great artwork, interesting characters, cool villains or monsters, a world I want to know more about, and an ongoing story that keeps revealing more of it. It doesn't need to be high literature. I'm completely fine with pulpy, violent, sexy, macho, ridiculous or over the top. I just want it to be good.

So what should I be reading? And if possible, tell me why you're recommending something instead of just listing titles. I'm also a big fan of collected editions, compendiums and omnibuses rather than tracking down a million individual issues.

I decided to start reading it since doomsday is approaching. Having a decent time. Wondering if anybody else is currently reading it cause I’ve been thinking a comic book club would be fun. Or maybe if anyone knows of online/reddit comic book clubs where folks read a run of comics together and share their thoughts.

Okay, so this is super subjective, but I struggled with this when I started reading comics, and I think it can really make or break your experience. I used to be obsessed with continuity, like, I *had* to know how everything fit together and how events played out. But honestly, even though I understood the big picture, I never really got the characters involved. I could tell you all about tons of Marvel events, how they started and ended, but if you asked me about a character, I'd be clueless. So, when I talked comics with other people, I felt so left out because they could explain and discuss these characters way better than I ever could. I loved Civil War, I could tell you how it kicked off and how it ended, but I couldn't tell you *why* the characters did what they did on a personal level; I just took it at face value. And honestly, I think if you're just starting out, you should focus on characters and teams. Not only will you get to know them on a more personal level, but you'll eventually run into all those events anyway because they're all connected somehow. I'm not trying to be anyone's boss, this is just my opinion, I just had to get it off my chest, lol.
