Chance Me, Admissions, and Prospective Student Q&A - 26/27 Cycle

Please place all admissions related posts here, in the form of comments, and current Cornell students will reply. Try to be detailed; if we don't have enough information, we can't help. Also, if you are a prospective student, and have questions about life at Cornell, feel free to post them here!

Any "Chance Me" or admissions related posts placed elsewhere will be removed. If you are a current student, and think that you could offer advice to someone considering Cornell, feel free to respond to some of the posts! Please only respond if you are qualified to do so. We will be checking through these regularly for spam.

Incoming students: you are now free to move about the subreddit!

As promised, the posting restrictions for all incoming students for the 26/27 school year have been lifted. While we do encourage you not to spam the subreddit with posts, your questions about classes, housing, and more will no longer be removed. Our goal was to keep the subreddit free for finals/commencement season. Now that that's over, we can return to regularly scheduled programming.

This does not apply to rising seniors or anyone else intending on applying to Cornell for future academic seasons (though prospective grad students are exempted). Your posts are likely better suited for subreddits like /r/chanceme or /r/ApplyingToCollege. If you want to specifically ask Cornell students for advice, our 26/27 Chance Me and Prospective Student Q&A megathread is live and pinned to the top of the subreddit.

Of course, you're still free to use the megathread if you wish (linked below). But keep in mind that they won't be pinned, so you may get limited to no interaction in them.

Happy Pride Month, and welcome to Cornell!

Still one laptop left for new students

I have one of my old laptops left I don’t use. MSI Katana Thin i5 13th gen w/ RTX 3050 - for 540 but negotiable since I know finances are rough, it’s just collecting dust so I want to get it out to people who will use it. New is 900, original box but the box has seen better days lol. The other laptop I had went to someone in the community and they love it. Feel free to reach out! We can meet somewhere safe like the police station or whatever:)

Posting this one just because the other post I couldn’t link pictures of this one.

FiberSpark at Collegetown Terrace has been awful, and CTT won’t let residents install an alternative ISP

I honestly don’t know what residents at Collegetown Terrace are supposed to do about the Internet situation anymore.

Since moving in, FiberSpark has been incredibly unreliable. I’ve experienced repeated complete outages, severe packet loss, and huge jitter, especially in the evenings. There have been times when the connection is technically “online” but is basically unusable for gaming, Zoom, or even normal Internet use.

I’ve done a ridiculous amount of troubleshooting at this point. I’m using wired Ethernet, not Wi-Fi. My connection to the local gateway can be completely stable while packet loss appears immediately upstream and continues to the final destination. During one outage, I was seeing around 87% packet loss to Google while the local gateway still had 0% loss.

What makes this even more frustrating is FiberSpark’s customer service. I’ve sent them multiple tests, screenshots, WinMTR results, and repeated follow-up emails. They’ve acknowledged that there are broader network problems, but I still haven’t gotten a meaningful explanation of the cause, what exactly they’re doing to fix it, or a realistic ETA. Lately they have barely responded to my follow-ups at all.

So I tried to solve the problem myself. I was willing to pay for Spectrum out of my own pocket and keep FiberSpark as-is. There is already a coax outlet in my apartment. Spectrum sent a technician, but the technician needed access to the building’s communications/mechanical areas to trace or activate the old coax connection.

CTT told me they would not allow the Spectrum technician access, so I ultimately had to cancel the Spectrum installation.

That’s the part that really gets me. If the Internet included with the apartment were reliable, fine. But when the provided ISP is having repeated outages and severe packet loss, residents apparently also can’t independently pay for another wired provider to get a reliable connection.

At this point I’ve literally had to use my phone hotspot because it is more usable than my apartment Internet.

For the amount of rent CTT charges, I really don’t think “use your cellular hotspot because the building Internet doesn’t work and you can’t install an alternative” is an acceptable situation.

Has anyone else at CTT been dealing with the same FiberSpark outages/packet loss? I’d especially be interested to know if people in other CTT buildings are seeing the same thing.

collegetown 3br apartment recommendations?

Upvotes

hi! my friends and i are looking for affordable (~1400k), well-maintained apartments in collegetown for the 27-28 school year. it would need to be within walking distance to campus, as close as possible, since none of us will have a car. does anyone have any recs or advice?

we are looking into eddygate and some other apartments in the area, but they might be slightly above our price range if pricing goes up next year. does anyone know if they are open to negotiating?

TCAT, how to Ride correctly.

Hello, this is a suggestive way to ride the TCAT so the bus driver and other passengers are not inconvenienced by you.

After scanning your card, walk all the way to the back of the bus. If there is an open seat. Please, sit. If there are no open seats on the back of the bus, stand in the back.

Do Not stand in front of the back door, that is for exiting the bus. If you are in the way, people will have to push passed you and it is rude in Ithaca to force people to have to graze your body to get out.

When people exit the bus and you are standing in the front of the bus, proceed to the back of the bus.

Only exit through the back door, unless the bus driver says otherwise.

Thanks!

CHEM1729 with Professor Stephen Lee

I am currently taking CHEM1729 (Solve It!) with Professor Stephen Lee in preparation for CHEM2070 in the spring.

Professor Lee is very tough to work with. So far, we haven't learned any real chemistry - we have been doing mostly mental math, riddles/puzzle problems, and some basic unit conversions.

I was wondering if anyone who has taken this course could attest to whether it helped them do better/get a better grade in 2070. It feels like a waste of time at this point, and all he does is belittle and scream at us.

GOVT 2665 Textbook

Willing to give $20 to anyone who has the textbooks to GOVT 2665 that they don’t need anymore or want. Im part of the CAMP program but they’re out of physical copies to give me and there’s no online access, have to wait a week to receive them. I really like annotating on the book so I’m trying to leave renting them from the library as a last resort.

I (accidentally, im going to drop two at the COE office tomorrow or the day after) enrolled on the waitlist in 3 sections, and my waitlist spots are 6,9(70% sure this is the first year only one), and 15(saturday class). is it even worth staying in any of these with such a high waitlist number? thank you!

Disappointed by dining

Pay over 3800 for an ‘unlimited’ meal plan and this is what you get. The guy outfight refused to give me more even though I took rounds to get it and said I can’t serve you again. This happened at the kosher section at Toni. I mean is that not absolutely fucking absurd?

I’m not new so I know how it works; I thought it was already stupid enough that they ration food and make you come only after you finish your small portion, but even after that to say they can’t give you any more after two times is genuinely beyond me. Is this even allowed for dining staff to do?

CORNELL if you cannot make enough food for students please do NOT make a meal plan mandatory. I’m genuinely baffled by this.

Public-facing Dining Hall Nutritional Information

At my previous university there was a webpage that had the nutritional information of almost every menu item they served (which was extremely large but very helpful for allergy and dieting information). However, I've tried searching at Cornell and only found people suggesting to make an appointment with a nutritionist. I just wanted to make sure there was nothing I was overlooking.

If scheduling with the nutritionist is the only way to get access to the info, I might do that, but I figured there were probably estimates listed somewhere. While allergies are somewhat of a concern to me, I can usually navigate that on my own. I mainly hoped to find out how much protein was in different items since that varies so wildly for non-meat based options.

Core Computing Requirement for DS minor

For an ECE major, does ECE 2400 satisfy the core computing requirement for DS Minor?

I don't see ECE 2400 listed here, but then CS 2110 isn't listed either! I already have AP credit for CS 1110 but pretty sure that doesn't count.

iClicker

i’m an exchange student here for one semester, and one of my classes requires an iClicker (not the app) for attendance. any chance i can get a second-hand one for cheaper or borrow one from someone? it seems wasteful to purchase a new one just for this term😢

Anyone who took CS 1112 last year or whenever they switched it from Matlab to Python, can you give advice on how to succeed and just how the overall difficulty is. I’m an ok programmer meaning I know everything up to functions in Python.

Laptops for students

AS OF SEPT 1st 2026 I5 RTX 3050 is the only one left now! - Can’t link new pictures for that but I listed one photo of it in comments!**

I upgraded to a monster pc and have my previous laptops that are in amazing condition and still have original boxes. They are both MSI Katana laptops with NVIDIA GPU in them. Just looking to get them out for someone to use because they are just collecting dust:) i7 brand new is listed 1200 on Walmart brand new, i5 is listed brand new on Walmart for 900.

These can be used for gaming or productivity either way the gpu in them offer a really good boost to speed that normal laptops don’t which makes graphics better too.

These pictures are of the i7 14th gen with RTX 5050 16GB Ram, can’t link pictures for the other one ran out of limit but it’s in just as good condition and that one is a i5 13th gen with a RTX 3050

I’ve lived in Ithaca my entire life, going to TC3 and plan to go to Cornell after the 2yrs at TC3. in Business Administration at TC3 and will be going for investment banking!

900 - i7 14th Gen RTX 5050 / 540 - i5 13th Gen RTX 3050 - Very Negotiable
