my crayfish died today. i found him stiff (rigor mortis). i had him for three years since i was in sixth grade. we got him at a supermarket and we were going to eat him but decided to keep him. his name was ghost and when we had him he molted once. in the first photo he is dead. second is after he molted. 3 and 4 are js random times. he looks different because of the molt. rip ghost. i feel stupid for feeling sad but i still cried over him. in the first photo he is dead.

Pet Any idea on what’s wrong with my crayfish? Spoiler

Ricky’s got me stumped. The parameters in her 55 gallon look fine, she has a diet of freeze dried shrimp, blanched carrots and sinking algae wafers. She shares the tank with 4 zebra danios (she ate the others, not exactly unexpected but disappointing nonetheless). Her tank is kept at 72F right now.

I have no idea why her claws look this way. I’m now suspecting “rust disease” but I have no idea what I’m doing wrong and can’t find any information on what this could be other than shell rot, but that doesn’t seem to line up with her coloration and lack of dark divets in her shell.

I got a dwarf crayfish a few months back and haven't been able to identify the exact species myself.

Anybody have any thoughts? Currently only about an inch or so long

Pet Renovation + Water change

The first picture is from a while ago but the boys water was getting quite funky so today was water change day!! Since he's been getting so big and has been struggling to fit under his favorite log in the middle I used his favorite rock he likes to pick moss off of to prop it up as well as a wee bit of plant rearrangement for optimal movement

Video Salt bath recommendations for shell rot? Spoiler

Hi, this is Ricky. She lives in a 55 gallon tank with some zebra danios. Last night, I noticed dark spots between the joints of her claws and at the posterior end of her carapace.

I’m kicking myself in the teeth right now because I wish I noticed earlier after she’s refused food for about a week, but I thought she was just getting ready to molt.

The tank stays around 65F. I checked the ammonia last night and the parameters were fine. No real plants in the tank and gets cuttlebone regularly. She gets bottom feeder wafers and the occasional freeze-dried shrimp (and sometimes blanched carrots). I plan on checking nitrates, nitrites and pH when I get home from work in a couple hours.

Any suggestions on how often and how long I should soak her for a salt bath?

Any suggestions, comments, concerns are super appreciated.

i’ve never actually seen her molt and somehow also managed to catch it on video! two hours prior i fed her a little bit of beef tendon and some carrot (just some bits n bobs tbh). her claws were so blue before, and she’s so dark after! she’s two years old and i grabbed her out of a local lake. i joined just to share cus it’s so cool

Photo HELP!!! EGGS?!

Post image
41 Upvotes

I rescued this crayfish from my friend a few weeks ago. It’s been eating and active, but for the past couple days, it has not been eating and it dug itself a little hole under the driftwood. from my research it looks like these eggs are fertile.?? Can someone confirm that? I’m still very new to crayfish ownership. Any advice would be very very appreciated. What should i do?! Its currently alone in a 10gal hospital tank as i thought she was severely underweight when we rescued her

Cherax for planted tanks

Anyone has a Cherax sp to recommend for planted tank? I have heard C. holtuisi orange form (Apricot cray) is the most peaceful towards fishes and plants. Im interested to get Cherax snakeskin tricolour but apparently whether they eat plants or fish depends on their personality as well as feeding.

I checked my tank and my crayfish was hiding in a corner eating something I can’t tell if it’s a bladder snail or something else anyone know??? It’s a yellow and brown spiral and the brown thing nearby looks to be a shell

20g long crayfish setup

Thumbnail

I am looking to setup a 20g long crayfish tank. There is not much information available online about these critters so I wanted to ask a few questions:

Is a 20g long tank large enough where I could do a school of danios as tank mates? Or is the crayfish better kept solo?

Is a standard Aqueon tank lid sufficient? See photos for my current 20g long I will be copying.

As far as oxygenation, I know they don’t like heavy flow, so would an air stone help? My only worry here is they’d climb out on the airline tube.

Thank you!

Edit: I just saw it’s illegal to possess crayfish in my state so I will not be moving forward!
