I would be willing to bet anything a lot of the 'bad' contestants are paid to be 'bad' on here

u/buderooski 12h ago
You would be correct. For shows like this, there is an audition before the show's "audition". The producers have already heard this woman sing, possibly multiple times. They chose her for the show because of how awful she is, and they know folks will be entertained laughing at her.
My band tried out for America's Got Talent one year. You basically get grouped up with a bunch of hopefuls and do your 2 minute performance in front of your group, some show producers, and a couple video cameras in a hotel conference room. We didnt make the cut, probably because we were fairly mediocre.
There's two ways to make it onto a show like this one... you can either be really good or really bad.

Yeah I've thought that ever since the show got a ton of viewers and attention from William Hung, which was in one of the first seasons. Some of them are so obviously bad on purpose, they're either getting paid or they're doing it for free for the love of the attention

I don’t think so. While I don’t feel comfortable at seeing someone making a fool of themselves. I do think there are a lot of people quite deluded and who believe that with just a little auto tune they’ll be mega stars.
1
u/Fair_Quail8248 14h ago
Yeah or they knew they would fail to get views and attention and hence why they took them in.
These shoes are exploiting people, sometimes very vulnerable who shouldn't be on it.
1
u/Steve90000 8h ago
Why would there need to be?
You don’t think there’s an absurd amount of terrible people out there who think they’re good?
Granted, they let some in for entertainment, but they probably sign up organically.

She's probably tried to choose a song that shows her range (which seems great and has potential) but she doesn't understand the words so can't do natural cadence.
I hate shows that are set up to humiliate people who are trying. There are other ways to entertain ourselves than laughing at people who have more courage than us.

u/Gandlerian 16h ago
Ehhh, if you go on a competition talent show, you know there is a high chance of being made a fool of. It is always the risk of public performances, you take that risk of you want to attempt such things.
She gave it a shot, which is more than most of us will ever do, so good for her.
22
u/hime-633 15h ago
No, i disagree. Constructing a tv show around failure (at least in the first however many episodes) is a deliberate and exploitative cruelty that I doubt is explained properly to the entrants.

u/Fair_Quail8248 14h ago
I agree. They make money on it as it gives attention and views. That's what they wanted.
3
u/CB307801 13h ago
Yes, I agree
A pragmatic take is that It’s a cautionary tale for us viewers to exercise self awareness.

This. I feel sorry for the people who went to this show just to get humiliated cause that's what people unfortunately want, see others to fail.

"Gonna be real with you. You're not gonna make it... BUT, we'll give you five grand if you do it really weird for the cameras."--Producer

I kinda felt bad for her when she opened her eyes and seemed to be gathering their reactions

This woman has a great vocal range and not bad pitch control, she just does not speak English so the song sounds silly. The rhythm of the lyrics in English is probably hard for her to know if she's pronouncing stuff correctly she's just mimicking sounds.
She probably rocks at karaoke in her native tongue

u/Ok_Calendar1337 12h ago
She technically sounds similar to shakira except this is a disaster, i almost think theres a good comedy shakira impression in there tho.
28
u/Velvet_Samurai 16h ago
Her voice is great, why are we judging her when she obviously does not speak the language this song was written in? She sounds like Shakira more often than not and no one judges her this way.

u/withoutpeer 15h ago
I was going to say, she sounds like she can actually sing and has a good overall voice but that weird inflection attempt was seriously getting in the way.
5
u/Velvet_Samurai 13h ago
Mistakes were made, but her voice seems really great. She just needs to sing only in her native language for now.
21
u/Ok-Fortune-8644 16h ago
No, she sounds like a non-english speaker slaughtering and already terrible singing style.
Why copy someone else? This is worse than that Pink impersonatior

I feel like that song just does not work for her. She kinda reminds me of a talent like KD Lang, with her ranges. I hope she isn't too discouraged and hell i couldn't do it.
3
u/Fair_Quail8248 13h ago
I hope she sees that many people still saw the potential and thought she was very brave doing this. I feel really sorry for people who go through this and feel humiliated etc. If it isn't an actor it must be very very difficult.
I think the shows should control the contestants before they get elected to come to be actual shows, so they can save people from humiliation. But unfortunately this is what they want to get attention and views, at the expense of the contestant who maybe felt very humiliated.

I only hear a semblance of “oh naur” over & over, like that’s her vocal home-base lol

This is what every single aspiring pop singer sounds like to me. For like the last 15 years.

Personally love how big and brassy her chest voice sounds and how little tiny almost invisible her head voice is

So, she sings with headphones.
She might be partially tone deaf or just have really undeveloped ear for pitch. Her tone could be trained up to maybe work for her.
Honestly, I'd give her 6 months of vigorous voice training and see what happens.
She obviously likes singing and faced big fear to try out. She seemed to be shaking, nervous.
As bad as this is, and it's like a 1 out of 10, I think she could eventually sing ok
11
u/DrumsAndStuff18 16h ago
In-ear monitors aren't worn because she's tone deaf or whatever; it's something used by stage performers to ensure that they can hear themselves and any other instruments -- or in this case, backing track -- while on stage.
3
u/Beneficial-Value3119 16h ago
I thought performers wore those ear pieces to hear the beat or something like that?
3
u/Training-Argument891 14h ago
they hear themselves. It's a "monitor." They can hear how it sounds coming out the big house speakers to the audience.

u/Old_Fart52 14h ago
I made it to 12 seconds and had to stop it. It was like a vocal version of when the terminator in Terminator 2 was being destroyed

It’s sad because if she didn’t do all that weird shit with her tone, she would have sounded good.

When i was i kid i thought i'm a good ainger until i hear record of my voice....nevere again, i'm quietly saving this world from the horror of myself, don't thank me🤣

I was entertained 🤷🏻♀️ Maybe not the way the performer intended, but entertaining nonetheless

u/Zero_Digital 6h ago
She knows she's terrible right? Like she didn't care as long as she got a moment in the spot light.

u/Hamilton-Beckett 4h ago
This is what happens when you sing along in the car and think “I’m awesome”
1
u/Bsmitts16 4h ago
I can understand everyone judging this except for the one guy who I’m assuming has never sung a musical note from his voice ever. I won’t even pretend to guess who he is, but I’d say it’s safe to say he’s never sung a musical note in his life/ minus those glasses which also scream “I’ve never sang a note in my life!!!!!
1
u/Bsmitts16 4h ago
Holy shit on rewatch I have no idea who any judge is, except for maybe pitbull? If I’m helping my kids sing, I’m hiding this entire thing from them. And my wife did reality singing

Like, she's got power and decent tone... Maybe someone can help her with what I can only assume is a very thick regional accent?

We all know how fake these shows are with these so-called bad contestants, but it's still hard to listen to.

u/s0n0rxbbx 16h ago
my bros, some people are invited for laughs. and they know it, they just get money for it
1
u/Fair_Quail8248 13h ago
Either that or maybe they truly are trying. My heart breaks seeing people going through something like that. She was still very brave, most of us here wouldn't even dare to try it.
