50cal bike = most punishing

Post image

I’m sure there are more punishing things that can be done at the gym but this morning I think I had one foot on the other side of death for about 10 mins post ride. Hit a 1:43 after doing 3 1RM round of shoulder press, back squat and deadlift.

Which box would you choose/what do you look for in a new gym?

I (35F) recently moved to a new city and am excited to take up CrossFit again after a 2 year hiatus to have a baby. Before my break I did three yearlong stints of CrossFit. I’m really stoked to get back in the game, but despite my experience it feels a bit like I’m starting from scratch.

The new house is exactly equidistant from 2 boxes and I need to pick one. I’ve gone to 2 classes at each and turns out they’re very different.

Gym A uses NoShortcuts programming, which I’m told incorporates a lot of Olympic lifts and lots of classic CrossFit gymnastic exercises like HSPUs, etc. The morning classes at Gym A were really full—I counted a 20:1 ratio one day and a 16:1 ratio the other day. This is great in the sense that it was high energy and it feels like a cool community with potential friend prospects. That said, the fact that there’s only one coach to that many athletes makes me wonder if I’ll get lost in the shuffle when I feel like I need support coming back. I also stress a bit about needing to share equipment when my lifts are bound to be much lighter than most, at least at the beginning.

Gym B is much smaller. Both 6AM classes had around 5 athletes. The owner designs the programming and coaches all classes. He says he “designs programming to meet his clientele,” which apparently means he focuses on strength and light gymnastics, and leans toward tamer movements geared toward 30-40 somethings (largely parents) who want to build strength and mobility, as opposed to folks who hope to compete. The workouts to me feel less chaotic and more manageable given my current fitness level. I also really like having space in the gym and I feel like the coach is able to give more attention. But classes seem quiet and lowkey compared to Gym A. One drawback is that Gym B is closed Thursday, which might prove limiting since I travel a lot for work.

WWYD? Any questions I’m forgetting to ask? What key factors do you look at when choosing a box?

TLDR; bigger gym with NoShortcuts programming, high athlete:coach ratios but fun community? Or smaller gym with low ratios, owner-designed programming geared toward functional fitness but closed Thursdays? What do you look for in a box?

It’s been about 14 months since I did an L5 S1 bulging disc doing power cleans in CrossFit. Has started to improve but started to feel I don’t think I can do CrossFit again which I’m guttered as I really enjoyed it and it gave me discipline and to just push myself harder every week. At the moment if I even lift a crate of cans of Coke I’ll be flaring up. My MRI in January on the left to the latest one last week. Has improved but it’s still impacting my life not been the gym since it happened.

Looking for something to feel better and get in shape. Crossfit?

I'm a 38-year-old Black male looking for a way to get in shape. I hover around 240-250lbs, with little experience working out. The last time I had a gym membership was 10-plus years ago, and even then it was aimless and unstructured. I live in the NOLA area and had a friend talk about CrossFit and how it's helping him. I think more than anything, I'm looking for a communal space with support factors in place when needed. I'm a chill guy and don't really like all the screaming and pushing people past their comfort levels. I understand being pushed to reach your potential, but I guess I need to know if you care about me in some sense before you're pushing me past my limits, I guess. So, the thing I'm asking is: are there any good CrossFit places in NOLA you recommend for a beginner who's looking to improve themselves?

Is the Strike MVMNT Haze still worth it in 2026?

I like the look of this shoe, so I was interested in buying it.

I have found several threads on Reddit pertaining to the Strike MVMNT Haze, and there seems to be two very clear trends: the shoe is either really really good and comfortable, or the quality and returns policy is really really bad. Perhaps these two things are not mutually exclusive - you can have really comfortable shoes, but maybe there is a high risk of the shoe falling apart or having manufacturer defects, which the company are really reluctant to address.

Some people said that the shoe also became narrower a couple of years ago (which coincides with the alleged quality drop).

Some people mentioned that they love the shoe so much that this is the 2nd, 3rd or even 4th time buying it. If this applies to you, was this repeat purchase because the durability was terrible or was it because the shoe reached the natural end of its life?

Is it still worth the buy in 2026? Or are there other good looking crossfit shoe could I have as an alternative?

Rx smart gear evo G2 - beginner ?

Hi , I’m new to CrossFit , but not new to the gym (15 years)

I’m a week into CrossFit and want to get double unders dialled in .

Would this rope be suitable ? I know it’s aimed at advanced , but could I just buy a different weight rope for the handles ?

I’m the type of person who likes to have the ‘right’ gear if I’m getting into something and I know if I buy some cheaper beginner skipping ropes , I’ll end up wanting the best ones after a few weeks anyway

Lost my Motivation

Back in February I fell off a ladder and injured my shoulder. I was out of CrossFit for 6 months and this month I started easing back in. I can’t hang from the bar, can’t do snatches, and movements like holding the bar for back squats hurt.

Right now I feel really unmotivated to go. Before this, CrossFit was my life — I was an amateur but I put a lot into it and wanted to get better every day.

Does this happen to others? Any advice? How do I get back into the rhythm?

My gym is no longer an affiliate. Everything has changed but the price. 🫤

I live in a low cost of living area. According to Google, total living cost is roughly 28% lower than the US average.

The local affiliate had been established in 2013.

6-8 months ago they dropped their affiliation and have become an independent gym.

They said nothing would change but the name, but it has, and not for the better.

The workouts are boring, repetitive, and they lack creativity.

It was costing each member $120 a month for unlimited visits. I was averaging about 3 visits a week, therefore $10 a visit.

Is it absolutely insane for a non affiliate gym to still be charging affiliate prices?

ETA: through some checking of their website, it appears the membership has gone up to now $160! 🤯
I think they’ve priced me right out of their gym. Jeesh.

First time trying. Do you consider crossfit vs strict form with different benchmarks? And what are those? However my form is not super clean.

Anyone here had a labral tear and eventually went for surgery?

I have been doing CrossFit for around 3 years and dealing with shoulder issues for about 5 years. Last year I got an MRI and found out I have a labral tear, which I think I have had for around 2 years.

The good thing is I do not have much pain and can still do most workouts. But some overhead movements do not feel right and lately I have even noticed some difficulty with simple things like changing my t-shirt.

I have done PT and it helped with strength, but my latest MRI shows the tear has gotten worse. It also shows some rotator cuff tendinosis but no tear.

I am leaning towards surgery now and mostly worried about recovery and getting back to CrossFit. Anyone here been through something similar? How long did recovery take and were you able to get back to heavy lifting and overhead movements?

Anything you wish you knew before surgery or during recovery?

Hero WOD Questions

So I feel like the CrossFit Mainsite has changed or left out some details about some Hero WODs.

1) For ODA 7313, is there still supposed to be a 3-minute rest and a weighted vest? I’ve seen mixed results.

2) For Wesley, how high are the box jumps supposed to be?

Leg strength and size

I am a lean woman who has a solid upper body. My back is probably my most well developed part of my bady along with my shoulders and arms. I am very good at all things gymnastics, moderate weigh muscle endurance and my engine is good as well. My biggest weakness is heavy barbell / absolute strength. When there is 125# cleans in a workout, I can do them, but they slow me down so much. Same thing with a heavy deadlift in a workout. My muscular endurance for moderate weight is great, and actually exceeds women that are stronger than me in most metcons. My deadlift is 245 and my backsquat is 210. I really want to develop my legs. They are the smallest / least developed part of my body. I spent the last year pretty dedicated to accessory work, yet my 1rm's have really not changed, and I haven't noticed perforance improvement when heavy barbell is in the workout. All while hitting new PR's in anything upper body or gymnastics related.

So here is where I am asking for help. Does it make sense to supplement at a commericial gym with machines to do isolation exercises specific to leg strength? For the purpose of getting in more sets and reps with less systemic fatigue. Who has used machines to grow their legs? Who has had a hard time growing their legs, and then found a solution? I'd appreciate any help. I've been on this quest for too long with little movement in the needle. Time to reevaluate my approach.

Ultimately I want big quads, glutes and hammies to match the rest of my body. And of course, most importantly, I want them to perform for me.

Tearing Hands Very Often

I started doing crossfit a few months ago and am having trouble with my hands ripping way too often. Any workout with a good amount of toes to bar or pullups, they tear essentially every time, including today where I had 5x15 pullups. What I’ve done so far:

  1. Got bar grips
  2. Trimmed excess dead skin closer to hand.
  3. Got a pumice stone, though not sure how deep I should be using it since I probably don’t want my hands completely raw before the workout?

Attached image is my hand before the workout, my ring finger part of hand ended up tearing on this hand which didn’t even seem to have any damage beforehand, so I’m at a loss on how to prevent this.

https://imgur.com/a/Ytw7s6N

Is there anything else to do, or is tearing hands just part of it on high rep bar movements?

Assault Bike Update

Likely no one cares, but got the assault bike for $384 before tax (to me a great deal).

Installation was easy.

Would love to hear some of y’all’s favorite assault bike workouts, whether it’s just the assault bike by itself or with other movements in a workout.

Feels as expected. Will upgrade when rogue (if ever) has a sale by getting one of their rower, ski erg, and Echo bike packages in the future.

Do you train cross fit alone? If yes, do you follow a workout plan

Hey guys, since I usually train alone and I create my own AMRAPS, EMOMS etc... and sometimes I find some in wodwell, mostly doing body weight workouts. If you train alone do you follow some workout pattern? For example one day mostly cardio, second day strength etc? Do you know some website/app where I can read more on proper workout plan for cross fit?

Experience with rhabdomyolisis ?

Has anyone here had rhabdo before ? I am recovering from it and I'm very scared because I heard people say that once it happens it is usually recurrent if you keep working out. Does anyone have experience with it ? Was it recurrent for you ?

Assault bike - 300 cals in 20mins (might be the hardest yet?)

Post image
12 Upvotes

I know I say this regarding all the challenges on the AB but I think 300 cals might be the best and also one of the hardest tests. Sure, the 1000 cals is a slog but it feels like you can pace it a bit and 500 cals is hard, but 300 in 20 mins you have to go for it from the get go! it's a great workout if you're short on time too.

Can I do crossfit with bodybuilding gear

So I've decided to do CrossFit instead of bodybuilding because of the new MMA classes I've been taking but my local gym (the only gym I have access to) only has the typical bodybuilding gears.

Is it possible to do crossfit in that gym with only the bodybuilding gear? And if it is, am I gonna have too much difficulties doing so?

I just want to get something off my chest.

I’m a male in my 30s, and I’ve been doing CrossFit since 2022. A friend introduced me to it, and I immediately fell in love with the methodology and everything that came with it. CrossFit gave me so much confidence and, in many ways, helped me become a better person.

But over time, I also realized that something I loved eventually became toxic for me. I’m pretty sure I was also part of the problem. There were things I said and did in the past toward other members that, looking back, I probably could have handled better. I take responsibility for that.

I eventually stopped going for about a year because of issues within the box. After some time, I decided to come back. It’s still the same box, but somehow, it feels different now. The people have changed, the dynamics have changed, and honestly, it doesn’t feel the same as it used to.

One of the things I struggle with now is the coaching. I don’t feel like the head coach is the right fit for me. This is just my personal opinion, but sometimes I feel like they don’t fully understand or observe the community they’re building. I’m not saying they’re a bad coach. I just don’t feel like their coaching style motivates me or gives me what I need.

And that’s difficult because I still genuinely want to do CrossFit. I still love the methodology, the training, the challenge, and the feeling of improving. The problem is that the other boxes are quite far from where I live, so switching isn’t really an easy option.

I’m also someone who really needs motivation. Even when I hit an ugly PR, I want my coach to recognize it and make me feel like it matters. That kind of encouragement pushes me to keep going.

I think this became more apparent when I started competing. I’ve competed several times, and there were moments when I felt like I wasn’t really supported by my own coach.

There was one particular instance that really stuck with me. I was warming up for a competition, and instead of checking on me or helping me prepare, my coach was focused on teaching another athlete who wasn’t even a member of the box. I understand that there’s nothing inherently wrong with helping another athlete, and I’m not saying they shouldn’t have done it. But at that moment, I really wished my coach had prioritized me, especially because I was their member and I was about to compete.
What made it harder was that other members of the box noticed it too.

Maybe I’m expecting too much. Maybe this is just my personal perspective. I know I’m not perfect, and I know I’ve also contributed to some of the problems in the past.

I guess what I’m struggling with now is that I still love CrossFit, but I’m not sure if I still feel like I belong in the community I’m doing it in.
That’s really all I wanted to say.
