But where is the World Mixed (4 Person) Championship, they used to include that AND where is the new World Championship Qualifiers? I was really excited to watch the Qualifiers in November, I feel like it is a mistake to not show them, I hope they get added later because I am disappointed.

I just signed up for the year and I am playing in 4 leagues 2 on Wednesday and Thursday and playing pickup on the weekends where there isn't a bonspiel being hosted. I only got into one league last year and wanted to play so much more then I was able but I feel like I might have over compensated. How often do you guys get to play and is it enough for you?

My slider is going to come off my custom shoe. Any recommendations for a glue or something to resecure it?

EDIT: thank you to all those that made good suggestions and shared what there clubs use to protect the hacks. To those that immediately chose to judge and lecture me in an unkind manner I hope you see the error of your ways and choose to be kind in the future. If you don't think what you said is wrong may all your rocks pick and all your hits flash.

For those that do solo practices, what strategies do you employ to protect the hacks. I've been practicing at a club that does NOT have removable hacks so I've been using the rock position above to somewhat protect the hacks. I have run to some problems with this setup namely: rocks bouncing off the boards and hitting the 2 closer rocks at an angle towards the hacks. Draws and lower weight hits don't matter as I can catch up to those but anything from 8.5s-5s is just too fast to catch.

Any ideas?

Started curling three seasons ago at my local club, mostly because a coworker dragged me to a learn to curl night and I got hooked immediately. For the first two seasons my draw weight was all over the place. Some ends I'd have a perfect weight shot, then the very next rock would either burn the hog line or die six feet short, and I couldn't figure out what was different.

A club coach finally pointed out that I was tensing up through my hand right at release, basically trying to steer the rock instead of just letting it go. My grip would tighten the second I felt the stone slipping out of my fingers, and that tiny correction was enough to throw off the rotation and the weight both. She had me practice with an almost embarrassingly loose grip, to the point where I felt like I was going to drop the handle early.

It felt wrong for probably two full practices. Then something clicked and my draws started landing in the house consistently instead of feeling like a coin flip every time. I also started counting my slide length instead of guessing, which sounds obvious in hindsight but I'd never actually paid attention to it before.

Still nowhere near competitive level, just a weeknight league player who enjoys the sweeping as much as the throwing at this point. Curious if anyone else had a similar "oh, I'm overcorrecting" moment with their release. Feels like such a mental game as much as a physical one.

Super excited to be hosting the TAM once again this year. We will have all kinds of freebies including the return of the $200 grand prize for winning the skills competition and prizes for the team with the best costumes. There will also be video games throughout the warm room and a dedicated console with Super Mario 64 to see if we collectively can defeat Bowser (there will be a poster board where you can put your name and how many stars you've collected).

I've been watching the big curling tournaments for years and have gotten into curling myself over the last two years.

I'm looking at possibly going to the Co-op International in Victoria, BC in October with my family. Right now it is just day/multi-day passes on sale. Definitely seem like a good deal if you can take advantage of most of a day, but with kids, I think seeing even two draws would be pushing it.

I'm assuming/hoping there'll be single draw tickets available at some point. Am I mistaken? What's the usual timeline for single draw tickets to go on sale? How does this usually work? Any advice? We would probably be able to go on the Friday or Saturday.

Hello all fellow curlers

I am currently setting up some recording equipment's in a skating hall and trying to write down some ideas.

The skating hall has five curling sheets. As today I have six cameras to record and a PC to stream with a vmix pro software.
The idea is to have cameras on each end of every sheet. So that makes ten cameras and a another one or even two cameras that captures the arena from above.

Inside a seating area inside the arena is the idea to setup two or more tv screens with close capture of each end.

In addition the arena has a big screen that can be used for multiple things (info, clock, etc.). Wich could be a screen to show wich team is playing and where and also to show the time that remains for every game.

Are there any fellow curlers who are working on something similar or have already made something like this ?
I would appreciate to get some inspiring ideas from other setups from you guys.

Future ideas are:

• have on screen points for every game.
• Local digital recording of every bonspiel (for future memories)
• improve and make more slick digital grapics

The way I understand the concept of triples is that it is intended to be a game that leads to learning for new curlers (though obviously many experienced curlers love the game as well). My limited experience with playing is that most teams have one more experienced player (typically the third skip) and then 2 newer curlers in the other two slots.

Since the game is played with 6 stones not 8, my question is why don't we pre-position a couple of stones as guards before the end starts with the spare rocks?

Give the hammer team a corner guard and the other team a center guard. To me this sets up the end to be more of a productive experience, showing newer curlers how effective guards really can be.

I know that you can say that the skip can just call a guard with lead rocks in an end. But my thought is that a lot of younger curlers play triples, and they might not yet have enough consistency to properly execute a guard, so this just makes sure that it happens.

I will also add that you already have marks in the ice from mixed doubles on where the guards should be placed, so that is not an obstacle either. And since you are only playing 6 rocks, you have one "dead" rock for each end to place as the guard, turning each end effectively to a 7-rock end.

The Competition Update section is quoted below

CGR reported that Lohja have agreed to take the Wheelchair Worlds next spring, a contract is being finalized. Both WMDQEs have now been announced for the coming season. Unfortunately, Vernon are not able to do the WMxCC in autumn, therefore World Curling are now in discussions with Kelowna about both the WMxCC and the WSCC, with the Seniors being a deal for 2027 and 2029. They cannot accommodate the WMxCC on the original dates and we are looking at options and will inform the MAs that alternative dates are being considered. If these discussions are successful then we are only missing a host for the PreQualifier events next April/May and this will be addressed once a decision is made on the format (Geographical vs straight ladder).

HLI supported moving towards a ladder competition system and asked why the proposal had not been progressed. CGR explained that he had been waiting for feedback from the Member Associations before proceeding. HLI said there had been no strong opposition, while BWE noted that although most members supported the idea, one group felt it was too soon to change the format again, and others were concerned about increasing the size and duration of pre-qualifiers. C&R were asked to review the proposal and update it for a final decision, noting that retaining the current zonal system could result in even larger events in the future.

A decision on the proposal from UAE is needed as soon as possible. A draft contract had been provided to them including 25% upfront non-refundable payment of the Hosting Fee. Despite the breaking of the ceasefire between USA and Iran in the past week travel restrictions seem to have been reduced in most of our main member associations with travel bans have been lifted.

As no alternative hosts have come forward, the Board would need to decide whether to proceed, with an exit clause tied to any future government travel restrictions. The discussion also emphasized the broader strategic value of the partnership. CGR noted that the UAE sees the event as part of a wider development programme for curling in the region, while ARY argued that hosting profitable events in new markets should be a priority, as the financial 6 returns could significantly strengthen the federation and reduce pressure to cut costs elsewhere. The majority of the Board agreed to move forward with the event in Abu Dhabi.

World Curling is really struggling to come up with a host for the World Mixed Curling Championship which means it will almost certainly delayed from its originally planned schedule of October 12th to 19th. In fact the event despite ostensibly being two months away isn't even on the World Curling's official website Event Page yet. (https://worldcurling.org/events/)

The World Championship Pre Qualifiers are also in flux and may potentially be merged after the first year of having a Pan Continental and European zonal system. I personally support the merger even if it means the event will be longer. Having four teams qualify out of the event instead of two feels like there are more chances for more teams literally.

Despite concerns from some about Abu Dhabi as the host of the 2027 World Women's Curling Championship it appears they are proceeding with paying a 25% non-refundable hosting fee and contract with them. And with the amount of money World Curling has on hand, I think that will mean that Abu Dhabi will likely be the host of their first World Curling tournament.

Having read through the history it appeared that Las Vegas was the original intended host, but then they pulled out, then Montreal was propositioned and they pulled out, and that is how we ended up in the UAE.

Not for nothing in the Finance update section:

CGR provided an update on World Curling’s budget, reporting that the projected deficit for the non-Olympic year has been reduced from approximately $700,000 to $400,000, including a contingency for competition-related uncertainties. The draft budget reflects the new competition structure, one additional mixed doubles qualifier, and proposals from the Development Assistance Programme (DAP) working group, including removing the budget for junior flights.

He also outlined the potential financial impact of introducing entry fees for non-pathway events, noting that the proposed fees would generate additional revenue. He also highlighted that a potential event in the United Arab Emirates could have a positive budget impact of around $500,000.

Money is tight and somehow hosting in the UAE will get World Curling a half a million dollars in positive budget impact and that cannot be ignored. Money makes the world go round.

My thoughts: I am mixed on if they should host, but I cannot deny the cold hard truths that no one is stepping up to host and the UAE seems to really want it and making it financially lucrative for World Curling. So I'm happy that the event will happen, this event will hopefully be financial beneficial to World Curling longterm, and maybe we will find a new fanbase in the middle east, that would be cool!

Team Malört has the distinct pleasure of having one of the first of Curling Tools newest brooms. Building on their “core broom” product, this broom has a 2 ounce flask built in.

The head is very similar to a hardline head and the shaft is carbon fiber. Overall the empty weight is 420grams (whereas my Goldline carbon fiber is 368grams). The weight when full, caps out at 471 grams.

As a bit of a review, I had a heck of a time filling the thing and spilled a bit in the process. It’s tough to see how full it is, and the provided funnel is so small that it if you don’t leave an air gap on the side, the liquid doesn’t want to flow into the flask. The screw on cap is sturdy and secure, no worries of leaking.

My only other criticism is that I wish it held more liquid, but I also don’t think I’d want to be sweeping with half a bottle of booze sloshing around inside my broom. It’s worth noting that the handle is smooth and doesn’t have any grip zone or sticky areas like some brands.

They JUST listed these on their site and have the same options as the core broom, 1 1/8” handle diameters, and the choice of a blue or pride wrap.

TLDR: this is a gimmick for sure, but a fun one, a decent broom, and great for an emergency “penalty shot”. We’re glad there’s a manufacturer out there who clearly has our best interests in mind. Now you can broomstack while the other team delivers.

I’m pretty hard on my curling shoes. Almost every pair have worn out from the inside out. Usually on the back of the heal. Decided to take the plunge on something better based on opinions I’ve read on this sub. Spent the money on some 900 series Balance Plus in hopes that they’ll last. Ordered and received reasonably quick. They fit but wow does the toe coating on the trail shoe look like it was done really poorly. It looks like there are craters in the coating.
It’s not just me, right?
My wife got some new Asham shoes with coating and it looks really good.
Balance Plus is new to me. Anyone else have this experience? Is this going to peal off or does it just look crappy and have no performance effect?

Previously you had to start a tournament with four players but it was allowed to play later games with only three players. If a player was not able to finish a game you could choose to continue it with three players (e.g. if you don't had an alternate). This is changed now. A player can only miss two consecutive ends, all games must be started with four players.

R3 now reads:

> continue play with three players for the remainder of that end and the following full end. A player who leaves the game and does not deliver all of their stones in any given end, may re-enter only at the start of an end. A maximum of 4 stones allocated to themissing player may be delivered as per rule R3 (g)(h). At the completion of these two consecutive ends the team must continue the game with four players delivering stones, either by having the departing player return or by bringing in analternate.

Failure to do so results in forfeiture of the game.

Been curling for about three seasons now at a small club, mostly rec league, and this came up in the bar after our game last night. Our skip is convinced that sweeping is basically decorative unless you're playing at a high level with really fast ice and precise weight control. I think that's wrong, or at least it's wrong for our team specifically because half of us throw inconsistent weight to begin with.

My theory is that at our level, sweeping matters more, not less, because it's covering for mistakes in the delivery. If someone's rock comes up a little heavy or a touch light, a good read from the sweepers can save the shot. At a high level where everyone throws the same weight every single time, maybe sweeping is more about fine-tuning curl and micro-adjustments. But down at rec league, half the value of sweeping seems to be damage control.

We tried an experiment last week where we deliberately didn't sweep one end just to see what would happen. Rocks that normally would've been guided into the house drifted way off line and we lost that end badly. Not exactly a controlled study, I know, one end isn't a big sample, but it felt like proof to me.

Curious what people who've been doing this longer think. Does the importance of sweeping change that much between skill levels, or is my skip right that we're overvaluing it because we notice the misses more than the saves. Also open to being told our ice was just bad that night and none of this means anything.

My club is looking to upgrade our facility for wheel chair curling. I have been tasked with designing a ramp to the ice. Some design considerations are listed below.

1 Our ice is 2 inches lower than the walkway  
2 The ramp will located near the top of the house so it will need to be removed during play  
3 the ramp cannot be a tripping hazard as it is located in an area of high traffic.

My dream would be an electric ramp that is mounted under the walkway that is operated via push button but we are open to anything. attached is a picture of the location with the ice out.

Is anyone watching Euro Super Series? Looking at the results (and the results of Baden Masters which I watched online) the Italians are doing quite good.

I was especially curious about what would become of Team Mouat minus Hardie and Team Whyte plus Hardie and it seems Team Hardie is doing better. 1) Any comments on the performance of these two teams? 2) Is team Hardie doing better mostly because of Hardie as skip or Whyte as fourth or both? Hi guys. Just wanted to start off by saying that this Black guy (22yo M) has been interested in curling since the age of 13after having discovered it during the winter games in Pyeongchang in 2018, but didn’t get my first experience with it until age 21. I had an awesome time at my local curling club (Peachtree Curling Association) in the Atlanta area, and look forward to starting a new season this year. However, I did want to say that I wish that I could find other Black people who have genuine interest in this sport and would want to take it somewhere. As we know, there aren’t many BIPOC in the world of winter sports and I want to change that. As for resources and community, does anyone have any ideas on where I can find them and bond with others with the same interest outside of the curling clubs? Thank you 🙏🏾.

Is there a guide anywhere for US fans to somewhat closely follow curling?

I haven’t watched much outside of the obvious Scotties and Brier on YouTube plus whatever Peacock is showing for the past couple of years. I’d like to watch more this year.

So far I’ve come up with: rockchannel.com for GSOC and curlingchannel.tv for European events. Looks like there is a cost associated with both but no information is on either site.

Presumably, tsn+ or sportsnet+ would be an option via a VPN but I’m not sure if the amount of curling on either really makes it worth it.

Some individual events would have YouTube broadcasts based off of past years.

I realize there are similar threads on here but they are many years old and a lot of the info is out of date.
