Thanks to you too

No! They got it it says formerly and in parentheses it’s not known that’s exactly what it says. I could see OWN and it looked like a K and then someone else said yeah it’s not that they’re saying I don’t know what it was formally, it’s saying on the document that our former name is not known. There you go

This is a distant relative and has just landed me at a dead end. Thanks for stopping by.

2

u/NekkidWire 5d ago

if you're still at dead end, Rachael looks like garbled Michael, maybe Michael Hammond will get you further.

u/rdmarshman 5d ago

I appreciate your time, it's definitely Rachael - unless somehow Michael was my great great graat grandmother. Which given how Liberal the maritimes are in Canadian I guess is possible? \o.O/

1

u/NekkidWire 5d ago

one never knows, eh :D would explain the missing maiden name though.

1

u/rdmarshman 5d ago

My guess is that the sin who was present at his father's passing did not know the maiden name of his grandmother. Melbourne AU -> Canadia is a big hike now, would have been a monumental journey back then.

How interesting... my aunt Olive born probably 1920 or so had handwriting exactly like this and her married name was Hammond

u/rdmarshman 5d ago

Mate there a heap of Hammonds across the Commonwealth. Many of the males are Henry Harry Richard William John Thomas, very common surname back in the day.

This one is from somewhere in eastern Canada. Probably New Brunswick. Early 1700/late 1800.

The crop is from the death certificate of her son , who was then in Melbourne Australia. Richard Jupiter Hammond. Shehad Richard with Jupiter Hammond.

I was thinking Richard Hammond but then you said it was a female so now I vote Rachael!

1

u/rdmarshman 5d ago

Rachael's son is Richard Jupiter Hammond, husband Jupiter.

Are you helping with a genealogy project?

I'm starting my own, something stirred within me yesterday afternoon. Never given two hoots, suddenly now it's the most important thing ever. The story is gripping! Was up until 530am or thereabouts when I posted this, tossed and turned for a couple of hours now I'm back at it. Must find answers!

This is possibly your relative "Rahael"'s [a.k.a. Rachel] surname. [Her first name appears to be spelled wrong in the OP image.] - Despite how it looks, that surname is SHAY or SHEY not Shez. It is probably spelled 'Shey' there [her daughter's birth record] - but, I believe her surname was also spelled 'Shay.'

1

u/rdmarshman 5d ago

This is a new angle, what is steering you down this path?

You're welcome by the way. Rachael Shay was Ross Hammond's wife. That is from their daughter Gertrude's - as a I noted - birth registration in 1870. Ross was the son of Yeoman Alexander Hammond and Ross's mother was the daughter of John Locke, whose family co-found Lockeport.

On Rachael's wedding registration and Gertrude's birth certificate her surname is recorded as Shey. But, on Gertrude's death certificate, it's listed as Shay. That family name is recorded alternating between Shey and Shay, although there are more Shay's and in particular around Shelburne, which is 30 km from Lockesport.

Anyhow, if you're "at a loss" I thought that might help. If you think its wrong, great. At least you can eliminate one path.

Fill yer boots!

Or it count be formally Beth something

u/MmeLaRue 5d ago

Look for a marriage certificate (if this isn't it.) Often the certificate will list the parents of both the bride and the groom. If the the provincial certificate doesn't have it (it should), then check the church records.

Richard or Michael Hammond formerly Seth (unknown)

“Not known”

1

u/Several-Ordinary-376 4d ago

That just might be “Michael” Hammond
Formerly(not known).

Don’t you feel silly when you’re working on a surname and it ends up "𝓃ℴ𝓉 𝓀𝓃ℴ𝓌𝓃".

1

u/Several-Ordinary-376 4d ago

The “t” at the end of a sentence that the end up looking somewhat like an “N” wasn’t taught in penmanship much after the 60’s

1

u/Several-Ordinary-376 4d ago

I just wanted to show you Michael Learned from Little House on the Prairie. Female Michael ‘s were not unheard of. But I do concede that it is Rachael

2

u/rdmarshman 4d ago

Oh well there you are!

I perhaps should have added context, I wanted to focus on the crop.

The name is of a fellow called Jupiter Hammond's wife. He was in New Brunswick, Canada possibly late 1700s - early/mid 1800s.

Family folklore (unsubstantiated) is that someone named Jupiter Hammond was a slave rescued by the Quakers, then went to London, trained as a tailor and then moved to Melbourne, set up a business, married, had a family, passed away 1888.

The document you're seeing the crop of is the death certificate of Richard Jupiter Hammond, son of Rahael/Rachael maiden name unknown, and Jupiter Hammond of New Brunswick.

RJ is my great great great grandfather. The similarities between how he advertised his business, and the way I advertise mine is astounding.

I know next to nothing of this guy. I got bit by the curiosity bug last night, and went looking. I don't have any contact with my family so I don't have anyone to ask.

But man it's been a ride. There's something in my blood that I can connect to and not be horried by.
