Questions / Discussions (Items · Builds · Skills) Shadow step for Mobility - I don't get it

Most of my time playing D4 has been with a sorcerer. My first alt this season was a rogue so I could try out ROA. I am now playing a hardcore rogue. I leveled with DOK and have tried both DT and ROA. Most of the build guides that I have been reading talk about using Shadow Step for mobility. I must be missing something or maybe it is because I am on a PS5 and controller, but I can only get mobility using Dash. Shadow Step barely moves when I press it and I cannot control where it goes.

My glyphs are around 125 and I am going to start pushing to level them higher but before I start I want to make sure that I am not missing something with Shadow Step. I would appreciate any advice from those of you with more experience with this class.

I use controller and I love shadow step. The node that allows you to use it without needing a target is necessary.

Hold the button longer. I’m on controller and also on hc and I’ve been maining rogue this season. Think of it like short press/long press and you want to long press

Thanks - will try this tonight.

Edit- tried this and that is what I was missing. Made a world of difference.

Shadow step has a node that makes it usable without a target and it activates unstoppable and teleports to your pointer location, even at the edge of the screen. It has a ridiculous distance.

Shadow step also teleports over certain obstacles and terrain. You can even shadowstep from one room to another without going through the doorway.

I have shadowstep on any and every rogue build. It’s an awesome skill.

However, it does have some issue tracking your pointer location if you haven’t moved it far enough away from your character location, which is why you encounter the smaller hop.

Be liberal in how far you move the pointer.

Could also be controller stuff as well?

I've gotten SS to 0 CD with a controller. It works just fine. Very similar to Sorcerer's TP. Just shorter range.

They’re on controller it has no pointer so nothing to do with a pointer.

never tried it, but I suspect shadowstep sucks on controller... the upgrade PC users use has it TP you to your pointer location and it ignores obstacles (making it 'better' than dash). Still, Dash ahs 3 charges... I use dash for mouvement and shadow step in 'oh fuck' situations or to go over terrain.

You cna get by only using dash... shadowstep is the first thing I drop if i run out of space for other skills. You lose some utility and your 'oh shit' button.

With the right Stats you can Shadow Step as much as you want - At least it is the Case for me using this Build.

I also play on PS5 and dislike Shadow Step. M1py had it in his DT guide last season that Shadow Step is not great to use when playing with a controller. Per his last season guide, I use Dash and an aspect named Apogeic Furor for basic DT farming but it’s a huge damage loss. Also you don’t have room to run it with Selig DT unless you drop Saboteur’s Signet but that would more or less kill the build. I can see how it would be far superior to use on PC

Shadowstep with uncanny treachery & opportunistic was a good leveling / lower tier build a few seasons back if you got ravagers aspect early. It was absolute hilarity just holding down the button and absolutely clearing entire zones in tens of seconds. Kind of making me want to make a rogue alt again just for that.

It's only good if you kill the monster you hit with it, so you get your charge refunded and can keep the dance going. If you aren't killing it, you just stop when you are out of charges.

It’s really mobility between groups of enemies. If you are right next to an enemy it’s going to just short hop you right next to it.
