‘They treated my son like an animal’: Father speaks out after Haitian student's suicide

He was relentlessly bullied by his fellow students, lost his soccer scholarship, and was kicked out of the ROTC. He was a good kid, a great student, and a talented athlete. He could have added so much to our community and now he is gone. My heart breaks for his family.

Haitian immigrant, Wright State student subjected to ankle monitor dies by apparent suicide

Thumbnail

Upvotes

"A Haitian immigrant studying at Wright State University has died in what appears to be a suicide, soon after being required to wear an ankle monitor.

Pierre Damas Bel is reported to have died Monday morning after parking his car and intentionally going in front of another vehicle in Clark County. Ohio State Highway Patrol is still investigating the case.

Pierre Ronal Bel, Pierre’s father, said in a statement released through advocacy group G92, that his son called him shortly before his death.

"He called me at 8:03 on a video call and said, 'I’m not feeling OK mentally because of the bullying,' and I told him to come home so we can talk," Ronal Bel said. “Around 11 the police showed (up) at my door to report that my son threw himself under a truck.”

Many Haitian immigrants in the Springfield area and beyond have been required by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to wear ankle monitors after the expiration of Temporary Protected Status for Haiti.

TPS is the legal pathway that thousands of immigrants came to the Springfield area before the Supreme Court in June paved the way for the Trump administration to end it.

Springfield Pastor Carl Ruby said in a statement that he had been sitting with the family after the son had been teased by fellow students at Wright State about his ankle monitor.

"I wish President Trump could hear the mom’s wails," Ruby said. "The family wants people to know that this was a suicide and they want people to know that President Trump, Stephen Miller, and Markwayne Mullin’s inhumane immigration policies made this happen."

The 20-year-old student graduated from Springfield High School in May, where he was a JROTC member and played soccer. He started classes at Wright State in August, where he said on his Instagram account he was studying neuroscience.

Pierre Damas Bel posted on July 30 on Instagram that he came to this country to pursue his education.

"I didn’t come here to commit a crime or hurt anyone. Yet now I’m walking through the streets of the United States with a GPS monitor on my leg, carrying a feeling of shame and humiliation that I never imagined I would experience," he wrote.

Sue Edwards, president of Wright State, said the university is "heartbroken by this devastating loss. Pierre was an active honors student who was passionate about soccer and was already actively engaged in his classes and the campus community. The University mourns the death of Pierre and extends our deepest condolences to his family, friends and loved ones during this unimaginably difficult time."

Counseling and support services have been made available to students, faculty and staff. The university said in a statement that its dedicated to providing a safe and welcoming campus.

Experts say suicide is not typically driven by one event or circumstance, but from layers of factors. Yet, research has been showing how the Trump administration's immigration crackdown has been creating toxic stress on those affected.

In March, a study in the New England Journal of Medicine made the case that the current immigration actions have become a toxic stress for children that's likely to leave a lasting impact on their developmental, physical and mental health.

Guerline Jozef of the Haitian Bridge Alliance said in a statement that Pierre Damas Bel's death is tragic.

“This is one of the most tragic outcomes of the Trump administration’s cruel and inhumane attacks on the Haitian community," Jozef said.

Anyone considering suicide or in crisis can text or call 988 to reach the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Press 2 to speak to a counselor in Spanish."

Panera Bread at The Greene's Last Day Open Is Today

Panera's been going downhill for years now and this one in particular was looking rough last time I was there. It's interesting to see The Greene continue to lose tenants, though. Especially the restaurants, you'd think with all the foot traffic would help places like Panera.

These kinds of organic social spaces are a truly welcome sign in today's forever casual Friday landscape.

I ate at the Greek spot Fete and enjoyed some light fare.

10/10 would recommend

Weird repeated experience at the Greene Nordstrom Rack

Upvotes

Maybe I’m losing it, but over the past few years, I’ve shopped at Nordstrom Rack a handful of times, usually for shoes. And the past 3 times I’ve been there, usually months to years apart, there has been a guy in the shoe section trying to strike up conversations with any guy who looks to be a younger adult.

The first time I thought it was just some harmless conversation, although pretty forced on his part. I entertained it for a bit before moving on. Then, literally at least an entire year later, same thing, same guy. This time I weaseled my way out of it faster, because alarms were going off in my head, and I later confirmed with my wife that I wasn’t crazy and that it was strange.

Now that brings us to today. I went into Nordstrom Rack looking for a suit, this time intentionally avoiding the shoe section, but I did overhear 2 people talking, and it seemed like a very similar scenario.

But this time, I looked and it was a different guy talking to any guy who would listen, so I steered clear of him. Then when I went to the register, I could feel the guy coming up behind me and he immediately tries to ask me about the suit I was purchasing, asking me if it was for work. Thankfully the cashier rescued me but this can’t be coincidental right? Or am I just being antisocial? I usually don’t mind talking with people when I’m out, but the patterns here are strange, and each encounter has felt off to me in a way that I can’t quite place.

Could be MLM tactics, cult/religious soliciting, worst case scenario something worse, idk, I’ve bailed out of the conversations before we got to the reason why they talked to me. It always felt like they were trying to lead the conversation in a certain direction, but I never let it get there, but it’s been bothering me for years now.

Has anyone else had a similar experience, or maybe even knows what these guys are on about? Nothing against Nordstrom Rack, not their fault at all, but if this is something sinister in nature, hopefully seeing this could help someone.

Dayton Appreciation The varied and interesting architecture of downtown Dayton

Thumbnail

I think it's really neat how so many eras of history overlap in downtown's architecture. We've got everything from neoclassical to Victorian to something more modern and everything in-between. As a big fan of history and cool looking old buildings, I think that our city has quite a bit to offer in those areas. I tried my best to capture the richness and detail in some of our buildings downtown in these shots, hope you all enjoy.

Hey all weird question but if there was a garage sale within 3 minutes of a festival over the weekend would you be more likely to stop at the sale or less likely to?

I’ve lived here my entire life and never one time have I’ve met anyone that’s been here or been invited. Is anyone else a bit bummed out Centerville has this beautiful resource and nobody gets to access it? This seems as exclusive as it gets. How does one get the invite back here?

What are the (Downtown) Dayton Panhandling/Busking Laws?

I’m down on my luck and I am thinking about busking.

No I wont ask for money outright. Instead, I’ll have a sign that reads “Tips greatly appreciated.”

It’ll just be me and I won’t bother anyone.

And yeah, yeah!. “Get a job!” What do you think I’ve been trying to do?!

Anyway, any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Anybody know someone who needs baby stuff?

My kids are older now and I’m trying to clean out their stuff from clothes, crib, chairs and everything in between. I want to give them to someone who truly needs them not someone who will just sell them.

Edit: i have two daughters (7 and 5) so I’m getting rid of stuff they no longer need or use.

Local News Boxwood Tree Moth in Dayton for 2nd Year.

Thumbnail

PSA this is a boxwood that has been damaged by the invasive boxwood tree moth. This is the second year that it has caused extensive damage in the Dayton area. It will kill many boxwoods. The pest is here to stay and I advise people to not plant them. Larger more mature boxwoods have a better chance to survive. Many local lawn and landscape company's can treat them if you would rather not have to replant your landscaping. I beg our local nurseries to stop selling them and educate your customers.

Advice & Recommendations Looking for a pediatrician in the area

Hello! I recently moved to Dayton and am looking for a pediatrician for my 7 month old. He is a little behind due to moving and still needs his six month check up. We’d love someone who’s holistic, like a DO. Someone we would feel comfortable asking all of our questions to and can trust for years to come.

Food & Dining Best place to buy local meat in bulk?

What is the best place/method to buy large quantities (like a chest freezer) of local meat for a good price? When I was a kid you could buy like half a cow from a butcher and you’d get a great price for it. Is that still a thing? I know Dots has bulk meat buys but I want to know if there are local butchers that are better deal/quality.
Thanks in advance!

The Beach Waterpark Commercial Jingle

For the past 5+ years I have been trying to find a 90s-2000s commercial for The Beach Waterpark with the famous jingle. The only one on youtube or anywhere online are from around 2011 and 2012, right when they closed and reopened.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHCY8p7xojs

This one is closer but not the same as the original:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETJWkTT03xA

I have seen multiple people on reddit reference the jingle and the one from the videos posted IS NOT the famous one from the 00s. I have poured over a bunch of commercial block recordings online and somehow not run across it. Have I gone crazy and I just remember it differently?

I am hoping someone here has some recordings from that era of TV or might have a connection to the creators.
