Complaint new player rant

I just started playing this game recently, have maybe around 30 hours now and god does everyone hate new players man. every other game has been just straight insults at me (especially the first 10 hours of playing) or some other new player because they’re unable to get wins to unlock characters for ranked. is everyone just unhappy playing this game? i want to have fun but it is a little hard when someone is just calling you or some other new player the r slur the entire game. i got a friend to play with me the other day and the very first online game he just started getting called slurs within the first three minutes of the game. i’m just ranting and shouting into the void, i enjoy the gameplay and its my first experience with a moba, i just wish people were nicer 😕

Sadly common MOBA experience. I would just mute em and ignore. It's unranked in an Alpha, they can suck it up.

People are miserable for sure. The game also highly rewards winning and punishes losing. 40-50 minute games are going to make people pretty competitive, especially since even in standard people are probably grinding. MOBAs are not beginner friendly games lol

The 15 win requirement was a huge mistake. Standards aren't people having fun at all. Pair that with bans being there and you can't even get the character you're trying to unlock. It's just straight misery.

7

u/_Blu-Jay 7h ago

The 15 win requirement is there so that you can’t just hop straight into ranked with a character, that is the point. People will be miserable no matter what, win requirement or not, I actually think the requirement is a good idea.

4

u/Gamer4125 4h ago

The whole point was to separate sweaty gamers into ranked and more casual players into standard, but with a 15 win requirement that made standard into a sweatier grindfest than ranked.

4

u/Magictoast9 3h ago

It should be a game requirement, not wins. 15-20 games is enough for someone to grasp the basics of a hero for their skill level.

6

u/luuk0987 Shiv 7h ago

It is simply way too much. I understand it for newer players. But I have 4000 games. When picking up a new character it isn't like I struggle with figuring out my buttons.

I understand the sentiment of it all, but it's just an immense grind.

Just look at the following page https://statlocker.gg/heroes/mastery Having 50+ games on a hero does not equal a significantly higher win rate for the majority of the cast. Like, how hard is it really to pick up Warden?

9

u/_Blu-Jay 5h ago

I could see them tapering off the win requirement for subsequent heroes after the first three get to 15 wins, I think that would be a reasonable change.

3

u/luuk0987 Shiv 2h ago

Yeah this definitely seems like the way to go.

Fyi standards still have mmr. It's all in your head that it matters if you're in ranked or not.

The issue is in standard everyone has this mindset that the games don't matter, and you're trying to play it competitively and think the team is holding you back.

When it's still mmr based and your mindset is holding you back.

3

u/Gustdan 3h ago

Does standard still have mmr? After the reset I tried standard and some people were going 0/15 and others were giga dominating thanos snapping anyone who looked at them in 2 seconds

2

u/zencharm Victor 3h ago

the matchmaking is probably worse than it was before so whatever mmr they're using doesn't work lol

1

u/zencharm Victor 3h ago

the requirement should only be to unlock ranked, not to unlock subsequent characters. at the very least, the requirement should take much less time for players that already have ranked unlocked. forcing experienced players to grind games in the casual game mode to unlock new heroes just makes standard miserable for everyone. 15 wins is a ridiculous amount of playtime just to unlock one character. it's literally like a week of playing if you're not grinding 10 hour days. anyone that thinks the current requirement is a good idea right now will be forced to accept that it's not once new heroes come out and everyone is trying to play them at once.

2

u/Junior_Ground6590 2h ago

Nah before that I don't remember this being an issue. They just need to tie it to account level or a character level and let all the egotistical maniacs yell at each other in ranked.

2

u/ZekkenD 6h ago edited 5h ago

the requirement being somewhere around a couple hours would be understandable. the win requirement currently idk. 5 min q + 30 min match, lets say ur a gamer so u go 15-10. 14 and a half hours to play a character in ranked.

it really does not take 14 hours to learn how to play a single character in this game, anyone who thinks otherwise is self reporting like fucking crazy. most of the skill in this game isn't character specific. and for the few chars that is maybe a justifiable metric on (holiday, viscous, shiv) you are better off labbing in nyc instead of playing the game xd

also its a voluntary decision to queue up for ranked. if someone wants to queue up for ranked on a char they don't know how to play their elo will self correct itself. that's no different from someone rage qing after 11 losses at 4 am, someone qing drunk, etc.

are you seriously going to tell me that people need 15 wins to be able to play abrams? if you can't play abrams after 2 games, you are the issue.

people are bad at the game because they are bad. if you give a bad player 100 games on a character they will still be bad. i have never in my life had an issue with people first timing chars in a moba, but perhaps that's cause i'm not low elo. people are bad if they have 5 games on a character or 1k. it doesn't matter.

all this does is punish people who learn faster and make standard miserable. cause u have people who want to get a char to play in ranked, u have people fooling around and with significantly looser mm.

u/Wither_Skelton_DCINC 8h ago

it’s only good for ranked balancing, and until the sweatier players unlock ranked we just gonna have to deal with it.

-1

u/fiddysix_k 6h ago

does not have 45 total wins

Is there sweat in the room

2

u/Wither_Skelton_DCINC 5h ago

Not generally but there can be unexpectedly high expectations.

-2

u/Critical_Moose Sinclair 7h ago

They should remove bans in standard but the 15 wins is a godsend

30

u/CoachRayBiggestFan 8h ago

Unfortunately the game is also partially to blame. Brand new players get lumped in with 500+ hour people in unranked still. Its absurd. Ranked matchmaking has been pretty good to me so far, but the new unranked is a complete clusterfuck.

4

u/nomdeplume 5h ago

This is the issue for new players. Your starting mmr is too high in a low population game

21

u/Epochally 8h ago

man this shit is wild to me. peak players right now is like 90k. I use my mic every game, 50 hours play time do far, and never run into this.

I guess I'm lucky but I have two messages, one for you and one generally.

  1. Mute and report, it does work and you get notified when action is taken.
  2. Some of the people playing video games dont have a lot of positives in life. There is a lot of poverty and struggles with things in their life and while I dont blame people for being mad at circumstance just remember that statistically speaking you're probably doing this shit described by OP to someone with a very similar set of circumstances. This is our escape together and we aren't gonna win em all. But you absolutely can be kind to all, and thats gonna make a huge difference to others lives and probably even your own.

17

u/ScienceMTP 8h ago

I've reported every instance of racism and bigotry I've encountered (nearly 900 hours of playtime now) and I've never once received a confirmation that action was taken.

8

u/Wierdwon 8h ago

Dude in my game yesterday was constantly hard-r-ing our silver for 40 minutes. They really need to be more firm with consequences.

1

u/greentiger45 Graves 6h ago

Oddly enough, besides the racism, there’s a lot of sexual talk that I come across. It’s so weird.

1

u/Epochally 8h ago

I'm sorry to hear that 100%. It's low bar but I hope valve is improving it because I've had better luck.

10

u/d20diceman 8h ago

Horrible to learn that there's a notification what action was taken, because that presumably means all the racism and afking I've reported has never done anything...

1

u/Epochally 8h ago

sheeesh two sides of every coin. Valve needs to do better. Even Apex has just one guy for cheaters but they do ban people visibly.

2

u/cchistt 7h ago

that’s why i’ve been so confused. my friend that’s been playing for months is telling me his lobbies have been nothing like mine, it’s like im just put into the rudest lobbies ever lol even when queuing with him. i’ve been reporting as well, i just had the impression before i played the game that deadlock had a relatively nicer player base than most other games but im just getting the opposite so far. 🤷‍♂️

1

u/Gustdan 3h ago

... you get notified? The hell? Never ever seen that ever, even with obvious cheaters or people blatantly staying in base and throwing the match

4

u/Wierdwon 8h ago

Join the official discord and find a group through the LFG there. There's a lot of toxic players and our discord bans about 1/3 of the people who come from there for being toxic or just assholes in general. Takes some time but the game is much more enjoyable when you're not subjected to randoms.

2

u/cchistt 8h ago

didn’t know that was a thing so i’ll definitely join!

5

u/Palumtra Dynamo 8h ago

Let me give you a piece of advice: When it comes to dealing with other players, especially in PvP games, don't take folks too seriously. Have a steady supply of IDGAF pills. Cuz such people waste your time and energy. Latter you can regain but not time.

2

u/cchistt 7h ago

for the most part it doesn’t bother me it’s just a little annoying only seeing negativity every game so far. i’d definitely rather have nice people to interact with sometimes

8

u/LandoCommando92 8h ago

Deadlock is an extremely competitive game, and the matches take anywhere from 20-40+ minutes. It isn't a surprise that people get upset when they have someone completely new on their team, the chances of winning decrease dramatically in their eyes.

I don't run into new players much, but if I ever do I usually just try to help them out. It isn't a new player's fault for not understanding the game and flaming them isn't going to make them play any better.

Don't take it personally. To be honest, if someone is playing with new players it probably says more about their skill level than yours. I imagine you have to be pretty low skill to be getting put in lobbies with new players. Just use the mute button and keep trying.

5

u/cchistt 7h ago

maybe i’m just used to other games where new players are queued with other new players instead of people with hundreds of hours. even games i win are filled with negativity (not necessarily at me), i think im just getting super unlucky with the types of people on my team

5

u/LandoCommando92 7h ago

Don't get me wrong, I still run into negativity that is unrelated to new players.

Last night I played a game as Bebop and an enemy Doorman was insulting me. Saying I was playing a stupid mid-tier character, etc. I just told him that he can continue typing but I was going to mute him, and I did. I removed the distraction, locked in, and my team won.

Come to think of it, I probably mute people every game, if not every other game. After ~10k hours in Dota, I've gotten pretty good at avoiding negativity.

3

u/Tujungo 8h ago

Devs made the barrier to good comp harder to reach so standard is a shit show. Sorry you are experiencing this but it is understandable people are upset when it feels genuinely unwinnable due to some teammates the game gives.

I’ve just reached 50 hours, and my biggest suggestion is to just mute everyone and just go with the flow and learn better as you learn patterns and strategies

Helps for me in my case cause I have a duo that’s been playing since last year so they’re good at helping me out on what to do or defending me

If all else fails, you could honestly mention you’re new and ask for advice at the start of the match or when they start yelling at you. If they’re a decent person they’ll chill out and give pointers, if not, just mute them

2

u/greentiger45 Graves 6h ago

Don’t feel bad man. Out of 20 games, maybe 3 are toxic when I play. Still a lot better than other mobas out there in my experience. If you start not having fun then just finish out the match and take a break.

Life is short. Enjoy what makes you happy

2

u/AvengeBirdPerson 6h ago

Just the classic MOBA experience.

But honestly I’m like 50 hours in and I haven’t really ran into much toxicity. I seem to be mostly playing with newer players and games haven’t felt too hard. It’s rare I get a game where it seems like I’m getting stomped by people with 100s of hrs

1

u/joinedformisseditor 3h ago

I get people that say they are new in the team chat. My teams are usually pretty accepting and encouraging. Especially if they are prioritizing the have fun aspect of GL;HF.

2

u/anime_topkek 3h ago

it’s a problem in deadlock because the matchmaking is so bad that it’s putting new players with non new players (since it’s prioritizing q times) - eventually it will be better for new players when open beta hits by the end of the year and there’s a million new players

1

u/AirEast8570 Apollo 8h ago

i literally never had that at the beginning. Probably because i took the first couple days playing to play vs bots to learn the basics and stuff and when i actually felt like i had enough knowledge to play the game i then started normal mp. Obviously know when i try new heroes it sometimes can be like that

2

u/cchistt 8h ago

at this point i feel like im
keeping up in most games i play, and ive played quite a bit of street brawl. this problem just isn’t strictly at me anymore, ive been in a fair share of games where other new players are the ones being insulted and it’s just kinda lame. feel like maybe new players shouldn’t be placed in games with players with tons of hours

1

u/GoofySilly- 7h ago

This is the LEAST beginner-friendly game I have ever played in my entire life. Don’t feel bad, this game genuinely is horrible for new players. Just keep trying to do your best and ignore the idiots.

1

u/Chxrubs Venator 7h ago

People are assholes in general. This game is hard to adjust to and learn. Take it game by game and you’ll see improvement. Fuck the haters just enjoy what you’re doing

1

u/wuznu1019 7h ago

Unfortunately, this is one of those games thats just hard to casually play.

Because its a moba, it draws some of the most competitive people. Add to that, it is the most demanding MOBA, so it's audience skews towards the higher end of competitive gamers.

All of that to say, Deadlock's player base is largely no lifing this game. Such no-life activities sadly comes with a lack of perspective. You are the casualty.

Let me be clear: that sucks. Deadlock is already hard for new players to get into. Its going to be even harder when the community has such vitriol towards new, or even bad, players.

1

u/_Blu-Jay 7h ago

MOBAs tend to be this way. I would highly suggest playing a lot of games vs the highest level of bots if you can’t keep up in standard games. My friend group did this when we started playing and it helped a lot. Otherwise just mute chat and enjoy playing. People suck.

1

u/Red-Silk76 7h ago

Welcome to mobas... the learning curve is rough... and people struggle to be nice/kind.

it sucks but it is what it is.

1

u/Omodrawta 6h ago

Just remember: muting isn't just for people who are offensive or whatever. If someone is being annoying or you just don't feel like expending the mental effort to hear them while you play, it is completely valid to mute them and move on.

And then as you continue your existence, blissfully innocent and unbothered, the angry player will continue yelling into the void. Their wails will dissipate into the void, with no surfaces on which to echo against.

"Why?" They will wonder to themselves. "Why is /u/cchistt not listening to me? They must be made aware of their skill diff."

And as you heavy melee into the enemy Lash's parry for the second time in a row, you will smile. Your screen fades to greyscale and you realize that this death symbolizes the one thing you truly desire while playing Deadlock. You are finally at peace.

1

u/Latter-Key-5587 6h ago

I played like straight shit my first 10 hours I’d say and I never had anyone shit talk me that was like 3ish months ago

1

u/Mr_Blobby1337 6h ago

I think unfortunately the format of MOBAs attract this kind of behaviour - people perceive early deaths or objective losses really badly because of the perceived lead advantage you give away, which in their mind will just become a stompfest later on which might waste 30-40 minutes of their time. Even though (particularly really early deaths) can easily be clawed back, it is a huge hit on some peoples mental lol. I'd just mute up and move on, it's an incurable symptom of the genre i think lol

1

u/fiddysix_k 6h ago

Idk I honestly have a lot of fun in unranked. It's a bunch of dumbasses / stoned people and I just fuck around and limit test new heroes which usually ends up winning the game since people take that shit so seriously and play cautiously trying to get their dubs on a new character.

I feel like I have the polar opposite experience to people on this sub, my ranked games are truly atrocious coin flips.

1

u/Pleasant-Ad9458 6h ago

i strongly suggest bot matches. i have about 80 hours in the game as my first moba, bot matches have helped a LOT. street brawl is also nice for learning team fights imo, and its low stakes so people don’t get too toxic. also, there is a mute button btw. i love to use it.

1

u/Peakomegaflare Ivy 3h ago

Welcome to MOBA life. Slurs and hatred are normalized unfortunately. People forget the most important aspect of games, actually enjoying it.

1

u/ewok_tube_sock Ivy 8h ago

A lot of people are just turbo toxic, in theory matchmaking should give you relative skills but right now it’s less than stellar

1

u/wrrrrrrld 8h ago

Street Brawl is probably the better intro than standard. Get used to PvP there and translate the other (not that this excuses the behavior of the players you encountered)

1

u/SuperUltraMegaNice Haze 8h ago

the r slur lol

0

u/Warm-Park2621 8h ago

sorry to break it to ya mate but that's PC Online Gaming in a nutshell. Here is a list of some other popular team based games with toxic player bases that are worse than Deadlocks: Counter Strike, League of Legends, Dota, Call of Duty, Marvel Rivals...the list goes on.

You're only spared if you're playing games where you're on your own but even there. I played SF6 to Platinum and even in Gold, which is basically low, you had people thinking they are insanely good, trying to add you after you beat them, to flame you.

Solution: Ignore it and keep playing. Only way to get better is practice.

1

u/cchistt 7h ago

i know it’s an every game kinda thing, i just had expectations that deadlock was somewhat nicer idk. i’ve played tons of hours on some of those games you’ve mentioned and somehow deadlock has been the worst for me so far. maybe im just unlucky

0

u/Obi-WanKnable 8h ago

Unfortunately a new player on your team literally means you're about to have an hour of your life wasted. Game should have a separate queue for people with less than 100 hours in game, and fill the empty slots with bots.

0

u/AlexMcNut 8h ago

Immediately mute all other players in your next game, its the only way

0

u/DramaticAbrocoma6353 8h ago

Sadly the community is toxic. I always try to step in and support new players but I can totally understand your feelings about the game and the community.

Valve got another game called Dota and I’ve heard that there is toxicity there aswell so my understanding is that Valve can’t handle the communities that well.

My suggestion would be to keep the voice communication and chat off if possible in the beginning if it’s hard to handle both playing the game and learning.

0

u/Bingoviini 8h ago edited 7h ago

My issue is the 800 ping that randomly appears every match (just this game. Everything else works fine)

I'd much rather take uber toxic racist tryhards, beacuse atleast they don't physically stop me from playing the game...

2

u/BringTheCalamity 7h ago

I had that consistently for about 6 months and was losing my mind. Never happened again after I moved into a new house (and probably more importantly got new wifi).
Obv not saying "just move!" but it could definitely be caused by your wifi.

2

u/cchistt 7h ago

i used to have this exact same problem with overwatch, every other game would work fine but overwatch id get insane ping spikes

0

u/teffz28 8h ago

Yeah just auto mute people for awhile unfortunately, I’ve had some amazing and fun interactions with some people but usually when I learn a new character I just mute everyone for the first couple games

0

u/homingmissile Vyper 8h ago

The community is pretty shit, just straight up. No "compared to XYZ" it just is.

0

u/fridgevibes Dynamo 8h ago

Thats just mobas brotherman. Unfortunately thats the vibe. Best bet is just to immediately mute.

0

u/madness707 Ivy 8h ago

It’s the culture of sore losers in this game. Mute and move on once you hear people talking negative. It unfortunately cuts communication if needed but I rather do that then lose a positive experience in the game

0

u/Whatsdota 8h ago

Yeah MOBAs are exceptionally toxic. Especially because it can become clear you’re going to lose very early on, but the game could go on for 20+ mins after that. This makes it very unforgiving for new players and understandably gets people frustrated at their teammates. But doesn’t give them the right to be toxic
