I muted everyone in a game so that I could focus. It occurred to me that that mute may persist into future games, and from researching, yes it does. But it seems like there's no way to UN-mute people outside of an ongoing game.
So, is there a way to be able to mute everyone (text+voice) but have it be temporary? I realize this is a niche use. Perhaps someone else shares this interest?
EDIT:
I specifically want a bind I can use for toggling the mute. You can check/uncheck in settings>communication for voice/text. But I want to be able to have a binding
You can use settings > communication, to uncheck voice+text. But I have not been able to set a binding for toggling that. As in, I don't want to have to dig into settings and hit a bunch of checkboxes every time I need a moment of quiet.
I'm so confused lol. I know it persists on a per player basis but you don't have to open the settings to mute. You just press ESC and click the microphone icons.
My understanding from that thread is that, if you do ESC and click microphone-mute, THAT mute will stay permenently. So, if you want temporary mute, you have to dig into settings
You can just click it again to unmute them. Its only permanent if you want it to be. You can toggle it on/off as many times as you want. That thread is clarifying that the mute will persist for the same player through multiple games as long as its never toggled back off.
Gotcha. My issue with the (ESC + mute) option is that I forget to UN-mute them. Then the game ends, and there's no way to un-mute them until we have another game together.
So, my current best option is just to dig into settings, which just takes slightly more time. And I wasn't able to create a bind for that setting-toggle.. I tried:
bind "M" "toggle voice_modenable true false"
Which seems to work until I try to use it, then nothing happens.
"My issue with the (ESC + mute) option is that I forget to UN-mute them. Then the game ends, and there's no way to un-mute them until we have another game together."
How is this an issue? What purpose would you have to un-mute someone if you're not in a game with them?
Assuming that the individual-person-mute is persistent across games, if I forget to un-mute them, then one day I'll match with them for a different game, and they will still be muted from the old game.
If I have to mute someone imo they stay muted forever. I played a lot of CS and if I muted someone, I have always regretted unmuting them.
I don't think this meets the time efficiency chart rules regarding the alternative to this task. Which is pressing escape and checking to see if anyone is muted, which you'll probably do anyways when you go to mute someone. You're shaving 5 seconds off.
Now to go deeper into this, you could argue the issue is remembering to do this thing. That's totally fair, I don't bother checking and I mute people regularly, but that's also just because I'd rather not deal with that.
An additional point for you is if a toxic (formerly muted) enemy is now on your team, but I think you'd just kinda figure it out when your team is responding to comms you're not hearing.
Regardless this was fun, and it looks like you found a solution to this in another comment. I love bullshitting on Reddit, have a good one.
Yes you can disable text for the enemy team and text, voice, and pings separately for your ally team. They're all toggles under comms settings. I do this a lot
Ah gotcha. I have a feeling there's a valve-compliant way to do that. I doubt they would care about macros for something like that, but i know very little about it. But yeah you're looking for a clutch hotkey setup
I mute people only if I have a good reason. People in OCE servers can be absolutely vile.
Sometimes though, I will get into a match, I have someone muted but I don't remember their name. I go and think "hmm maybe they will be better if I give them a chance".
9/10 times, I end up muting them again not more than 5 minutes later. Should have trusted my instincts that I had a valid reason for muting them.
