Connections:

• Cartoony, big-nosed protagonists of late 2000s/early 2010s animated comedy movies who are subversions of classic super-genius tropes, being very prone to failure in contrast with the role they were based on (Gru being based on the typical idea of a supervillain; Flint being a reverse of the idea of a collected scientist who always knows what to do). These films became popular enough to span into full franchises with sequels, video games, and other spinoffs.
• Both had large aspirations from a young age with a passion for science and inventing, although their hobbies rarely saw support and they were never well-liked by their peers (Gru’s mother was never impressed with him despite the fact that he created an actual rocket as a child, not having a much better social life as his classmates found him disgusting and said that he had “Gruties”; Flint’s mother, his sole supporter, died leaving him with a father who did his best but knew nothing about technology and a town that mocked him).
• Despite this, both continued inventing, aspiring to become one of the greats in their field (inventor; supervillain), operating in laboratories connected to their homes and being assisted by their lab partners, inhuman creatures with strange manners of speech (The Minions, as well as Dr. Nefario; Steve the monkey with his thought translator). Throughout years of creating these devices, they ended up with several machines under their belt with varying degrees of usefulness, with the most basic and well-known (with the exception of the FLDSMDFR for Flint) being a machine that encased its targets in a hard-to-remove substance (the freeze ray; spray-on shoes).
• As they became adults, their public perception remained less-than-desirable (Gru was considered past his prime by the time of the first film; Flint was still considered a loser by Swallow Falls), but they would soon begin a project to change this perception (Gru plotting to steal the moon with a shrink ray and cement his title as the greatest supervillain of all time; Flint creating the FLDSMDFR, a device that could convert water into any food).
• However, this plan would fall apart due to complications, eventually forcing them to take action against the obstacle/antagonist of the film to save their loved ones (Gru successfully stealing the moon, but discovering that Vector had kidnapped the gorls, forcing him to try and get them back while the moon began to break from the effects of the shrink ray and revert to its original size; the FLDSMDFR beginning to cause mass-destruction with its horrifically mutated food that had become an apocalyptic threat, forcing Flint to put a stop to it with the help of his friends).
• While their plan failed, they ended up happy regardless, having realized that their friends and family were far more important (Gru having grown to love his adopted daughters and later marrying Lucy, still having the Minions and Nefario with him as well; Flint connecting more with his father, Tim, falling in love with Sam and forming friendships with Brent and Earl). Parts of their arcs in the first film are also somewhat reversed, as Gru is a father who learned to connect with his children who he initially only adopted to be part of his scheme while Flint is a son who finally learned to connect with his father after years.
• Both have also gone against their peers who posed as antagonists, mainly a villain with an orange/white color scheme (Vector, an up-and-coming supervillain who kicked off Gru’s quest to steal the moon by taking the Great Pyramid of Giza; Chester V, another inventor who Flint had looked up to growing up).

by their greed, manipulation, and destruction. They are both powerful, ruthless figures who

ultimately die because of their overconfidence and blind arrogance

Connections:

chambers, fueling their greed and desire for absolute control over their territory(The Sky

Kingdom/Erebor)

>Both are very prideful about who they are and what they own, with them boasting about their

power and wealth when they talk to the protagonists of their stories(Dragonets of Destiny/ Bilbo)

However, they are very overconfident, and it ultimately leads to their downfall(Scarlet’s pride kills

her when she fights Ruby/ Smaug’s pride killed him when tries to kill Bilbo, but dies to an arrow)

>Both are very cunning and manipulative, but easily underestimate their opponents, leading to a

loss of something precious to them(Scarlet uses the right side of her face to Glory/ Smaug loses

Was gonna save this for my birthday on the 5th but I finished it early lol

I was originally going to have several extra slides explaining the stats and exact reasoning for both of them, but I was starting to lose motivation for it and decided it wasn't interesting to read. I still wanted to share my thoughts on the matchup though.
