Question❓ Finally figured out why my degus were refusing their fresh food every morning
Had this problem for a couple months where I'd put out a little bit of chicory or dandelion greens in the morning and by evening it would just be sitting there untouched, sometimes even kicked into the corner of the cage like they were offended by it. I assumed they just weren't hungry or maybe going through some pickiness phase, which didn't make sense because degus are usually not picky at all.
Turned out the issue was timing. I was feeding first thing when I woke up, around 6am, but these two don't really get active until closer to 8 or 9. The greens were sitting out for two hours before they even bothered coming down from the hammock, and by then the leaves had wilted enough that the texture must have put them off. Once I pushed feeding time back to match when they actually start moving around the cage, they were diving on the greens within minutes.
Also started only giving a small handful instead of a big pile, since I read somewhere that too much fresh food at once can mess with their digestion given how sensitive they are to sugar. Rotate between a few different safe options now, cilantro, dandelion, small bits of bell pepper, and they seem way more interested when it's varied instead of the same thing every day.
Curious if anyone else has run into weird feeding timing issues like this. It felt like such a dumb thing to overlook but it made a real difference once I adjusted.
