Question Are Breech GL even usable?

Just started playing again in 2026. Pretty good in crucible, and going for dead eye title, but my god the GL suck. I know it’s a skill issue but i genuinely don’t see anybody being good with breech GL, they feel so under powered it’s not even funny. Half their health had to be gone and still won’t kill. Maybe I’m lagging cause I’ve had some games miss melees when it should’ve registered. I’m just getting really frustrated because I feel I can’t grind this at all. Any other weapon I can drop at least 10+kills with any other gun I don’t even use often, but dammit I struggle to get two or three in a match with breech GL. I hate these breech GL. Please tips or just admit they threw all the pvp grenade launchers to shit.

Edit: thanks for tips everybody, I will be trying them all out hoping I don’t go insane haha. Genuinely much appreciated though.

They are definitely usable but they are extremely hard to use and take a ton of practice. There are some people out there that will run your shit with one.

Check out EpicDefender on YouTube.

this shit was why I cheesed the mountaintop quest with battlenet servers way back in y2 lol. Getting a bunch of grenade launcher kills in crucible as someone who was not good at crucible and just wanted the meta raid weapon was pure ass.

thank fuck bungie realized how stupid that was

Try playing warlock, boots of rain. But honestly, it is a skill gap, not everyone is fond of gl and that's why you barely see them in crucible. For PvE that's a whole nother story

I hear ya. Sadly I’m a hunter. Currently loading into range to see what I can do for practice, but honestly the fact they made it crucible based and not pve, is taking a lot of the fun out of what should’ve been a good time imo. Thanks for the tip.

I feel your pain as a hunter main.

I did a high impact hand cannon with as much handling as I could, with whatever the fastest Gl I had. I think at the time I did it, I was using Salvagers Salvo with the iron banner hand cannon, both with quick access sling. One headshot with the hand cannon and swap to the GL to try to finish them.

Also I'd always try to get heavy which made it easier.

Play 6v6 mode like Control with Tether. Once your super is up snag a few enemies with the tether, then hit one with the GL and it'll kill all of them and all count as GL kills. That's how I got the GL multikills for Mountaintop way back in the day. Also use a heavy GL if that counts as GL kills for the title, not sure if it does, and pay attention to the heavy ammo spawns.

boots of rain? What is that? Never heard of of them. I thought maybe you meant Rain of Fire, but is the air dodge reload enough to justify its use for a breech GL?

Rain of Fire?

Breech GLs are mostly used to weaken and swap off, not to finish off. That said they’re also the most niche and difficult weapon around imo so I get and share your frustration.

Yep. My PvP Empty Vessel with spike grenades and Threat Detector and Disruption Break was one of my favorite ways to run. Paired it with a max range Lonesome and it didn’t matter what I ran for a subclass. Worked well everywhere.

Probably just use witherhoard, pair it with satasis sucking grenade for more consistent results

Remember when the play for GMs was blinding nades. 👴🏻

Alethonym + Crackshot Aspect + Reload Dodge + Radiant Dance Machines + 100 class stat. hope this helps

Wait for momentum control I’d say. Makes getting kills with them way easier, same with most deadeye weapons

I was gonna ask if they still have that. Just bring in Witherhoard or Fighting Lionel Richie

Throw on fighting lion and just do pve stuff with it to get the feel. Go for long shots, bank shots, silly shit, until it starts to feel consistent. Then move onto special ammo stuff. They're a little weird in that everyone who uses them regularly has a different preference for perks, velocity, etc.

I have over 2k kills on militias birthright and fighting lion, over 1 k on ignition code, over 1k on the 30th anniversary breech gl, and 5k on mountaintop(doesnt count but still wanted to mention it lol).

Yes they are very usable once you learn trajectory and angles.

Try getting a GL with less velocity, itll give you an easier time tracking your shots. If youre still struggling try proximity nades, less damage but more consistency.

Fighting lion has a very low velocity plus infinite ammo so id start practice there, it just takes time.

This is coming from the guy with over 550k fighting lion kills, 7k of which are from pvp. Its a rough niche to get in to but its such a rewarding feeling

I have 50k kills on Fighting Lion. It just takes a lot of practice. Unfortunately, FL isn't as good as it used to be.

Whenever our clan runs vog, one of our guys uses his Blinding GL to slowly push the shielded minotaurs off the edge of the 1st atheon encounter. No relic needed

Simplifies running the Kabir shield around, but I havent seen many other recent uses for breach GLs yet

Conditional finality is the easiest way to push em off, if ya got it lol.

IIRC, unless breech GLs got adjusted, only spike grenades will guarantee a kill and that’s only on a direct hit. That used to be how they worked for breech GLs with arcing trajectory. That may have changed when they adjusted the hell out of mountaintop though.

The sucky part is that they’re largely meant to be weapons where you tag someone to weaken them and then finish them off with a different weapon since, as you said, it’s hard to do it the other way around unless your target is very low health.

The damage they do is variable depending on how close you get the grenade to the target so using the GL as a finisher is inconsistent. You can try using something like a handcannon to weaken before swapping to get more consistency since you’ll know more accurately how weak someone will be from 2 crits.

Use witherhoard like a shotgun, thats how i did it.

They definitely have a learning curve. Probably my fav special though. I still remember when all the streamers were demanding they be nerfed despite being like 1% of kills in crucible

People (mostly vocal streamers, etc) complained about them in PvP, despite them never being more popular than shotguns/snipers.

So Bungie nerfed them, with some (mountaintop) nerfed below the floor.

They CAN still be used, but in almost all cases they will be worse than any other typical pvp weapon pick loadouts.

Witherhoard is your best bet, if you use it like a shotgun and hit you're guaranteed a kill (most likely a trade since they'll probably kill you right after you hit them then die to the Witherhoard ticks).

My "I don't feel like thinking" build uses a salvagers salvo with Trickle Charge and Gear shift.

Hit a few shots of Anarchy, pop a rally barrier and unload all 20 rounds of Salvo with no reload.

OP is talking about PvP, FYI.
