DWU vs DW2?
Which game do you like more?

Honestly, if it wasn't for the really dated visuals in DWU I'd say it's still the better overall game.
As much as I like DW2 the galaxy view just isn't as good as in DWU, being able to see the sectors in a grid and the way the influence bubbles were super clear was awesome.
However I haven't played the latest update to DW2 with some border lines so I could be wrong.

I don't care about the graphics, there's more severe differences that makes dwu better for me. There's no resupply ships now(those were my favorite ship class, and very useful too). And now we can't build anywhere we want, so no deep space outposts and radar stations.

DW2 has tanker ships, and you can build deep space radar stations. You just can't build deep space construction yards.

The thing with ressuply ships - you could build them bigger than your usual size limit, so we could have a flying fortress or basically a moving port. It was glorious.

IMO even though the second is a direct evolution from the first, they cannot really be compared on their "vibes"
I like both for different reasons, personally the first one has a certain charm and more "complete"(?) arcs for all the different factions. The fact it is in 2D also makes it "cleaner" to me.
I have not played the second for some time, but last time it just did not feel complete. There just does not seem to be as much to do for me.
But if I have understood right, DW1 was the same when it was released, and the progress on 2 is awesome. All I need from 2 is for singular planets to feel more important (feels like all needs are too easily met) and for more stuff to be interactable meaningfully (looking at the pirate dlc with a hopeful gleam in my eye)

DW 2 has improved a lot recently. A new upgrade is coming soon. If it's finished, try a new playthrough. Currently restarted after about a year of not playing. It's better :)

I haven't thought of this game for soooo long. I've never played the sequel, but DWU was the ... most epic game I can imagine. One weekend, an ounce of weed and my private space empire under my tutelage. I loved that game too much.

DW2 is very good but I still miss some things from DWU.
I remember in DWU your allies would notify you that they're sending a fleet to help you at system xyz, I haven't seen that happen in DW2.
Although to be fair I haven't played it that far with the most recent update, this may well happen now.
I hope so, I like this sort of thing where your allies actually try to assist you.

Although very similar, they're surprisingly different at their core to be enjoyed. DWU is a manual game than can be automated in parts, the optimal way to play is manual, and automate the boring parts to you.
DW2 is an automated game that can be made manual in parts, the optimal way to play is automatic, and make manual the fun parts you want to handle.
(the difference is both in quality of the automation, and in the balance of things)
This misunderstanding stopped me from enjoying DW2 for a while until I got it, as a "99% manual" DWU player.
I love both, with a small preference for DWU still, but they're very different due to that and it's not really one on top of the other for me. DWU is outdated, but it keeps a place alongside SotS 1 and others as "great legacy games to go back to from time to time".

I have fond memories of DWU, but I can't go back anymore.
