So, I went ahead and started a blog that is largely focused on the Liturgy of the Hours. I only have 2 posts; I've been focusing on getting the legal entity (a 501c3 nonprofit) setup, getting the domain, etc. There's also an interesting connection to the Corporal Works of Mercy.

Anyways - you're the only Liturgy of the Hours nerds I know except a few monks and ordained men I hang out with. Come check it out.

There are some pretty interesting posts coming up, including some yet unpublished information from the Major Extracts publishers, some reviews of more obscure breviaries, and of course some introduction to Liturgy of the Hours stuff.

I saw the post about Ascension publishing a stand alone General Instruction on the Liturgy of the Hours and also adding to Volume 1. With volume 1 being the last volume to come out, have we heard anything about a General Instruction of the Liturgy of the Hours for the Word on Fire set of the Liturgy of the Hours?

So, a few updates from MTF on the forthcoming Major Extracts:

1. They now have both the general instructions and a Compline volume for preorder. Should be out in "early 2027"
2. They've changed some of the language/ descriptions on the FAQ page for the forthcoming Major Extracts. One of the most notable changes is:

• We are in communication with the USCCB about publishing a second, Matins-only volume (Major Extracts). It would contain the liturgical texts, including psalmody and a selection of hymns and chants, of the Office of Readings (Matins).
• Midwest Theological Forum plans to publish the diurnal volume—and, if a license is granted, the Matins volume—in advance of the mandatory use date of the First Sunday of Advent, December 3, 2028.

Whereas previously they made the claim they WERE going to publish a second Matins only volume. Now, it seems like there's some doubt about that.

1. Further updates on the diurnal include:

• At minimum, this diurnal volume of the Liturgy of the Hours will contain selections from Lauds (Morning Prayer), the Daytime Hours (Terce, Sext, and None), Vespers (Evening Prayer), and Compline (Night Prayer)—enough to pray each of the Hours in the diurnal throughout the year.

and

• A diurnal (Major Extracts): This will contain the liturgical texts, including psalmody and a selection of hymns and chants, for the Hours throughout the day: Lauds (Morning Prayer), the Daytime Hours (Terce, Sext, None), Vespers (Evening Prayer), and Compline (Night Prayer)

I am a Roman Catholic who uses the DW:DO Commonwealth Edition book to pray morning and evening prayer. As a singer, I prefer to sing/chant as much of the service as I can and am currently working on an antiphonary with the traditional Gregorian melodies for all of the antiphons contained in the DW:DO. One thing I’m stumped for, however, is what to do with the anthems that replace the Venite at Christmas, Good Friday, and Pentecost, as well as the Pascha Nostrum/Easter anthem. Would these simply be sung to a psalm tone, or are there proper melodies?

Does anyone have any idea when the entirety of the Vetus Ordo office will be fully available in Neumz? I can’t really seem to find an answer online and right now it’s just kinda…nothing. I really love the idea of chanting the office along with the monks, or being able to play it in my car.

Our pastor says a private Mass in Latin (Novus Ordo) on his day off, and he invited people to come if they wished. I found something to print out the Mass parts, because I’ve forgotten so many of them. But is there such a thing as a daily Missal with both Latin and English, side by side, and also music for the chants—like we used to use when I was in Catholic grade school? I realize this isn’t on -topic, but I figured this would be the place to find an answer.

in the ordinary it says “in the communal celebration of the office, the acclamation is added :

Let us praise the Lord.

- And give him thanks.”

that makes it sound like you don’t pray this when alone. what do you all pray in individual recitation?

I'm asking this question to those who follow the Roman 1960 Breviary

I know all 150 Psalms can be prayed in 1 week but there are instances in which there are 1st and 2nd class Feasts** and also there are some days like Ember Days and Lenten Days

** = if I'm not mistaken, if there's a 1st or 2nd class Feast on a day which is not Sunday, the ferial Psalms of that day (ex: Tuesday) are set aside, to be replaced by Sunday psalters, am I right?

I want to improve my reverence while praying the office and I'm looking for ideas. If I have access to a church I pray in a church but usually I don't. Sometimes I pray at a desk but sometimes I pray on a couch or discretely on the bus ride back from work. What do you do? I've thought about lighting a candle, but I'm not sure if this is proper or if anyone else does this.

Last week, our team made a trip to Jongbloed in the Netherlands for a press check, where we got to see the printing process for our volumes firsthand. And now, they're officially being printed!

The title is rather condescending, but that is not my intention. I am exploring the 1960 Breviary as I attend both forms of Roman Rite for Mass and would like to “test the waters” of the older breviary.

Coming from the LOTH in the USA, I understand the hours which directly correlate. Vespers is still for the evening, compline is still for the night, etc. However, Prime was suppressed at V2, so it is new to me.

My question is: If Lauds is morning prayer, what is Prime? A second Morning prayer? What hour is it sanctifying that Lauds or Terce do not?

Following a recent post, many were stating that prime was also used to assign tasks in the chapterhouse. Prime was invented at a time when daily mass was not a thing. How would prime work in a monastery/collegiate church with daily mass with terce afterwards?

Would it happen before or after mass? If before, it doesnt make sense to discuss business then do mass, if after, how does one combine prime and terce (surely cant discuss business bestween the two hours)? What would it look like practically is what Im asking.

Curious since Our Lady's Matins is shorter and basically invariant, so it'd allow a form of lay use of that Hour without adding anything to the bulk of a portable volume.

I’ve been praying this vintage 1 volume breviary for months now and love it. 4 week psalter, has office of readings, morning prayer, day prayer evening prayer and night prayer.

As I understand it this was a precursor to Benedictine daily prayer, I also have the 3rd edition (standard and complete )
