Flexibility

Hello, question for employees, specifically CA, how flexible is Dominos for people who already have a full time job? Is working 1 or 2 days a week possible or would that just be annoying to work around? I wouldn’t be able to close, but would have weekend availability. Also, do you have start and end times? I do have a family and would need to know the time I start and get off work. I appreciate any input.

I'm not is California. I am a teacher and only work Sat/Sun as an opening driver. No issues at my store.

I’m not sure if this will help much as I’m not in CA but in NC, but there are multiple people at mine that work maybe 2-3 days a week. Definitely doable, but it likely varies by location because there are both Dominos chains AND franchises (our location is a franchise)

I have a regular 9 to 5 and only work Saturdays driving pizzas around for few hours.

Out times are fluid and depend on how busy it is. I’ve never tried to leave at my out time when it’s busy. If it’s busy, I’m making money so I volunteer to stay.

It entirely depends on the store and what they need and what position you're applying for. If they've got tons of weekend workers then they'll probably pass your application over. If they're stuggling to find people to work weekends then you're probably golden. If they need closers they'll pass you over. If you're doing delivery they'll have tons wanting to work weekends already but if you're planning to be an insider then you've got better odds because it can be hard to find people willing to work weekends since the stress isn't remotely worth the pay.

As for start and end times, that also entirely depends on the store. Some just do start times and send you home whenever they don't need you, never bothering to set end times. Some do start and end times but it's generally expected that you stay past your off time if it's busy or go home early if it isn't. You pretty much never get off right on time. Like ever. In 6 years I could count the number of times anyone got off within 15 minutes of their scheduled off time on one hand.

How much sooner or later you might get off than scheduled will in part depend on state labor laws. Could be you can't be sent home till you've worked at least a couple hours. Could also be that you get sent home as soon as you arrive. Could be that you only have to stay 15 minutes after your shift ends. Could also be that you have to stay 3 or 4 hours past the end of your shift.

And if they legally can't force you to stay past the end of your shift due to state labor laws then they'll still ask, making it clear that it's totally optional, but then if you say no you might find they schedule you for fewer hours or don't schedule you at all, claiming that they struggling with labor costs and giving hours to more dedicated workers who need them.

It's also pretty common for stores to try to call you in early on days you're scheduled and even if you ask for just 1 or 2 days a week they may schedule you for 3 or 4 days then try to guilt you into working those shifts, apologizing and saying it'll just be the one time (it won't be) but if you refuse then you might notice that you start getting fewer hours.

I generally recommend that if you want to work just once or twice a week you choose two specific days you're willing to work from the start, make it adamant that those are the only two days you can work and have an iron clad reason to be unable to work any other days. No "I could occasionally do a shift after I get off of my other job." Once you say you you can sometimes work a certain day they will likely treat it like you can always work that day.

There's the possibility you end up with good management that respects your availability and gives you one or two shifts a week and doesn't try to pressure you into staying late or leaving early but that's a rarity, Domino's doesn't pay management enough to hold onto good managers.
